There is a Pete Townshend documentary this week on BBC Radio 4 (Tuesday 1.30pm GMT, repeated Saturday 10.30am) on how the late English renaissance music of Henry Purcell influenced his and the Who's music....

Well now when time permits I'm going to have to watch this.  I don't know much about Purcell (mainly his works on the Clockwork Orange soundtrack are familiar to me) but if we're talking the first Who album (My Generation) I clearly don't know enough about Purcell. 
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

this doesn't surprise me at all, musicians are an open -minded lot and pick up infuences from many obscure sources, i know Paul Macartney listened to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and included  a similar horn solo on "Penny Lane".

I knew he was a big Terry Riley fan, but I was not aware of this.

I was unaware of this collection's existence. Obvious influence now looking at the track listing. I would love to hear what he does with Scarlatti's  213 Sonata.

That disc is a mix of either chamber orchestra or Townshend I guess on synth - so you may get something akin to Scarletti's  original concept of that piece. I'm impressed by the complete 1999 live rearrangements of Who Are You and Won't get Fooled Again on another disc.

That's disappointing then. If I want to hear faithful Scarlatti I'll listen to Ross and be done with it. I'll probably check out that collection though it sounds tasty as a whole.

Purcell did some really lovely orchestral works for both female solo voice and choir.
Nice to learn this influence on Pete's work, thanks for sharing the interview.
