I couldn't get into Porcupine Tree. Rush I never was a big fan, although in limited quantities they are starting to grow on me.
The Mars Volta: really don't care for most of their work, but I think Deloused in the Comatorium is a great album. That one clicked with me, their others don't

As for porcupine Tree, if I wasn't such a nice guy, I would probably nutcheck you. BUT :D I'm nice. So I'll just tell you your commiting a crime, and that you should go listen to "Stupid Dream", and "Deadwing" continuously until your ears start to bleed. :D :D :D :D
about 2 years ago I would have completely and utterly agreed with you about The Mars Volta. Deloused clicked, ratherly quickly for me. However, their others (more so after frances the mute) took amazing amounts of listening to finally snap into place. I love all of their stuff endlessly now (excluding the most recent release, as I havn't even listened)

Genesis first off does not suck. Second of all you have to be in the mood to listen to Genesis, though for me I'm always in the mood. You should give them a second chance.

Yeah when I first heard the Lamb, I was like wtf so overrated. After about 20m listens, it's starting to grow on me. With SEBTP, I only liked Moonlit Knight for a while, then, after about 20 listens, I discovered the glory of the rest of the album. However, Nursery Cryme got me immediatey.

For me it would be Dream Theater. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate them, I like them, I just don't get the colossal admiration and towering esteem they are held in. To me they're good, not brilliant. Lyrics are a bit plain and the band sure can play but their composition doesn't match their ambition.
Also ELP, who do actually suck.

Genesis and Oingo Boingo are the only two bands whose discographies reside on my Ipod and that never get changed out.

saying bands "suck" is no argument and is also rather immature.

It would be Marillion for me. I've tried to get into them, I just can't. Another band I get kind of iffy on is Dream Theater. Some of their stuff I like, some of it I don't.

agree, I would never say a band sucks, simply because I dislike a record or two or the band itself. Other people consider that band great, not to say one of the greatest bands

I don't have much time for Radiohead. Very cold and uninteresting and I don't like Thom Yorke's voice.

You got farther than me. Frances is the last one I still own. Amputechture didn't do much for me. De-loused remains a classic. That was an astonishing purchase for a "mainstream" band.

I would have said The Mars Volta, but the new album is fab, I love it, "With Twilight as my Guide" is my absoloute favourite track for this year, it's simply stunning, mesmorising and beautiful.

I'm surprised no more takers for Yes.
Had to get to page 3 before anyone even mentioned them.
I'm sure I SHOULD like Yes... after I'll I'm a massive Genesis fan... and Yes are all brilliant musicians... but they just don't do it for me.
Maybe they take themselves too seriously? Genesis had a sense of humour, which I've never seen in Yes.
I'm similarly underwhelmed by Rick Wakeman's various solo efforts.
ELP is a load of pretentious w**k, IMO, also....

'Yes' are best listened to not watched in my opinion. Can't really stand Anderson's new agey guru smile and gestures :)

Yes, I had a similar experience. The Lamb and SEBTB had to grow on me, but turned out to be real gems, the rest of the albums, like Nursery cryme, got me immediately.

I have tried to like Van der Graaf generator, PFM and Gentle Giant, but generally I don't like those bands eventhough so many prog-fan seem to love them. It's kinda strange that most of King Crimson-fans -like me- also love VDGG, but I don't. I think that couple of VDGG tracks are... well, good... but generally that band is so overrated that it cannot seem to amaze me! I like most of the Italian prog, but in my opinion PFM was the least impressive of the 70s Italian prog bands. And their music in 80s and 90s...
