The Walrus Awaits.
Seriously, I don't have a clue which bass guitars and amps/effects Paul McCartney used ... but my guess is that most of the stuff was custom made or at least altered. Edited by Mr ProgFreak - October 07 2009 at 11:09 |

mmm that's probably true, but the bass guitar parts in Helter Skelter, Back in the USSR, sound very heavy.

He may have been playing a Ricky by then, I'm not sure, but then again he may not have played all the bass lines either.
I like the bass on "I Will" personally. |

i don't know about this bass sound in particular, but maybe he was bi-amping? i hear a lot of bassists use a guitar amp as a secondary, for a distorted sound

Here's some answer:
"The argument has been put forward that the level of ability and creativity he brought to the instrument beginning in 1965 during the Rubber Soul sessions was due mostly to the expansiveness of the Beatles' music at the time. The opposing view, and one that should not be taken lightly, is that it was due to his new instrument - a Rickenbacker 4001S. "

funny... both on those tracks... that was John Lennon on a Fender 6 string bass... McCartney played the Rick and a Jazz bass on the album. |

According to Marc Lewisohn there are 3 bass parts on "Back In The USSR" played by John, Paul and George. It is well known that Macca played the drums on it as Ringo had left the band at this point. |

hmmm... why bother asking then.... read more... think less.... start with this... http://www.amazon.com/Paul-McCartney-Playing-Basslines-Softcover/dp/0879308842 though you might not like the answers....it's clear and deep analysis of Paul's bass lines (along with a lot of background information about recordings, instruments etc) the Beatles got a Fender 6-string just before recording TWA... I assume you know that type the one Jack Bruce made famous... the baritone guitar tuned A,D,G,E,G,B. Lennon and Harrison both played it on the album while Paul was playing piano .. guitar... or off smoking a J while they were recording... they also used it on Abby Road.. again while Paul played Piano. |
