In continuation of my meager attempt to divert some PA forum discussion time away from Porcupine Tree and the other usual suspects, here is my 4th installment of Rushfan4's New CD Discussion Thread.   Lobster Newberg's Actress has been out since the beginning of the year.  I've only given this about 4 listens, but I have really enjoyed what I have heard, and by creating this thread it will give me an excuse to give this one a lot more listens this month.  C'mon guys, after seeing this album cover, I know that you will want to look and see what is inside.

You can check out samples here on their MySpace page:  http://www.myspace.com/lobsternewberg

You can also listen to streaming samples here on their official website.  http://lobsternewberg.com/

Of the 4 albums that I have suggested for discussion so far, in my mind, this album represents what I kind of define as progressive rock.  The songs have enough of a jazz feel and are quirky enough to make them progressive, but commerical and accessible enough to make them actually enjoyable to listen to.

Give them a shot and see what you think.  The album can be purchased from iTunes from a link on their website.

The physical CD can also be purchased at Amazon and directly from the band, here on their official site.  http://lobsternewberg.com/store.html

At any rate, I really think that this album is one that many of my friends here at PA will really enjoy, and you won't regret checking them out.

Give them a listen.  See what you think.  And come back to this thread and discuss them.  I am hoping that we have a little success here and maybe we can do it for other lesser known newer releases.  Either rate, let me know what you think.

And in case you missed the first three installments of the New CD discussion thread please check it out here at thes links:

I should note that for those who frown about these things, I am not a representative of any of these bands.  I do not get paid to endorse them.  All of these albums are albums that I purchased as downloads from eMusic.  They are all albums that I have really enjoyed and therefore I am trying to bring them to the attention of PA members so that they may enjoy them to.  Obviously, I can't guarantee that anyone else will like these albums since it is all a matter of taste, but I have a feeling that there are some of you out there who will. LOL

I should also mention that although I am a Collaborator here at PA, this thread and recommendation is made entirely independently of my duties as a PA collaborator, and is also totally independent of the PA Artist of the Month that is endorsed by M@x, the site's owner.

I believe that you can stream the entire album here at Last. FM and the songs Bug City and Tightrope are available for free downloads.  http://www.last.fm/music/Lobster+Newberg/Actress

Oh, the first album in the series that I'm familiar with. Big smile

The Lobsters are overall in great shape as a new prog band, I found Actress more focused, whereas the debut had its "circus flows". Otherwise, they both release the shape energy.

Definitely high on this year's prog (and, particularly, eclectic prog) scale - at least for me.

Time for me to give this one another listen and thus another thread bump.

If nothing else you all must go to the links above and check out the streaming of the 1st song Set Your Sails.  If the piano/saxophone combo doesn't grab you then you can probably move on, but I think that a lot of prog fans will love this combo.

This, their second is indeed more focused and where they develop their own sound.
And yet, I prefer the first one, which is an utterly fun listen.
But I need to give this album more listening.

I've not heard the first one yet.  I am hoping that I will be able to track down a copy of it somewhere.

My PA buddy H.T. reviewed this album on his blog, so I have copied the link and saved it here so that others can reference.  Hopefully, H.T. doesn't mind.

Don't mind at all Scott. Smile

This is a very good album. Like Assaf, I was still partial to "Vernal Equinox" at first. However, "Actress grows on me with every listen. I can't pick a favorite anymore.

Scott, you also might remember that I used to do threads like this a while back. They are probably still here, buried somewhere. I think it is a great idea to try to get attention to something different than the usual suspects.

Thanks H.T.Smile

Yes, I do remember you doing threads like this.  They don't get as many hits as the endless threads with the usual suspects, but as long as a few people see it and find some new music that they enjoy then it makes it worthwhile.

I found Vernal Equinox available for streaming on Last.FM, so I am giving that one a go now too.

Good band for musicians so young.

I thought Vernal Equinox a little scattered and unfocused. There are also some musical passages on the album that are pretty much lifted from other bands.

Actress is a way better album.Tighter, more focused and better sounding as far as both the writing, music and production goes.

The young keyboardist/vocalsit Colin Peterik is pretty much the brains behind the band.He is the only remaining member from the first album line-up and writes most of the music.

I think that I read somewhere that Colin's father was a member of the band Survivor, who are well known for the Rocky theme song Eye of the Tiger.  They also play that song during the 9th inning of Tiger games when they are trying to rally the troops.

Oh yes.  Another enjoyable listening experience today.  I am glad to see that some of the Shred Room denizens are interested enough to give Lobster Newberg a try.  I'm eagerly awaiting to hear their impressions.

So that is who is connected to the legs on the album cover.  Nice.  At least she's a Ford woman. LOL

I think "Bed" might be my favorite.

I like "Bed".  It has the most Chicago-style horns on it.

I like it more for the dreamlike introduction that pops in here and there.

This album really does deserve to be heard by more people.  If nothing else because it is "bouncy" and it causes computer animated women to pop on your screen like the one posted by Epignosis above.
