Please vote for the option that is the closest to your case. Say you're one of those "only 5 albums deserve 5 stars" people, and you translate 90% of your 4.5 stars into 4 stars, then you should choose the fourth option.

No albums would be exactly 4.5 stars to me.  If I decide it would be more like a 4.7/5, then it rounds to 5.  If it would be more like 4.3/5, then it rounds to 4.  I dont need to decide where to round 4.5 because everything is either closer to a 5 or closer to a 4 for me.  (Can you tell I used to be an umpire?  Umpires hate when people mention the concept of "tie goes to the runner" because there is no tie, someone gets there first)

I use a 1 to 39 rating system with a Gaussian weighing function so I haven't got that problem.

Remember my useful moniker on the subject...

'If you're ever not sure, give it four '

If I have to think about giving an album a 5 star rating, I'll usually opt for a 4, mainly because I'm rarely in any doubt about a 5 star album.

I voted for they all go to 4. The ratings are drowning in farcical 5 star appraisals for albums the reviewers deem to be masterpieces even though they candidly state things like 'the last 3 tracks/second half of the CD is a bit boring and not as good as the remainder but erm ***** Ermm

If it weren't for the laudable provision of allowing non-english speakers to submit ratings only, I would happily scrap the critters tomorrow.

It depends on if I feel the overall album score should be higher or not probably... I'll let that dictate it while explaining that it is a 4.5.

In my book
5 stars is 5 stars
A true masterpiece in its sub-genre (subjectively off course), and the best or one of the best by this particular artist. (again subsectively).

Anything less than that, is 4 stars or less.
Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

I'm not sure what the exact mental process that lands an album in the 4.5  region is (or any x.5 region for that matter).

4.5 = 4 to me, every time.

It's been a while since I've written an album review. I have quite a list to get through..

Basically if an album blows me away I'll give it a four. If it blows me a way, AND it is in some way, also profoundly ground breaking and progressive, I'll give it a five. The difference between a 4 and a five, in terms of how much I enjoy listening to something is actually quite negligable.

I didn't realize that the PA community is full of mathematically illiterate people.Shocked (Of course i'm just kidding, everyone knows progheads are usually math geeks.)  How about the good ol' linear mapping?

5 stars = 5 and 4.5 Clap

4 stars = 4 and 3.5

...

1 star = 1 and 0.5

However, just because Allmusic, IMDb and RYM  use this scale, doesn't mean everyone else should.

Agreed.

Also, I don't really subscribe to the whole decimal idea. I have my beliefs on what an album's rating should be down to the hundredths but I will use the words that accompany the ratings to judge what I give the album.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.

5 becomes 10, very rarely used - and only with album > 5years old
4.5 become 9, but the album better be bloody good.
4 become 8 etc.

I can't stand reviews like that.  I see five stars, I expect the person to think the whole album is worthy of praise, or if anything that maybe ONE song is lower quality than the rest.  Generally if I'm reading a 5 star review that states something like this I just consider it a 4-star rating, or skip over the rest of it and be more wary about the particular reviewer.

Edit: As far as the question goes, I'd have to go with the third option.

I went through this dilemma with Mastodon's latest album. I think it's a 4.5 star album, but I also think it's one of those records that will not only be highly influential in prog circles, but also marks a formative masterpiece for the band that garners praise from almost all fans and critics (much in the same way that CttE did for Yes)

Those two factors, in addition to the fact that the album totally rocks my socks off every time I listen to it, bring it up to 5 stars.

I really can't picture myself doing that for any more than 30% of 4.5 star albums I rate, so I pick the 3rd option
