What, Pulp Fiction didn't do it for you?! Shocked It's effin' brilliant! One of the best movies of the decade!

Saw a German film called The Edukators (in translation... no idea about the original title) last night/this morning... extremely moving, sincere and gripping. Interesting analysis of personal change and the state of the world today. Perhaps a little excessive at one point, but with one of the most effectively ambiguous characters I've seen in a long time, this one was really entirely worth watching. 9/10

Sorority Row
This was disgustingly bad, absolute trash. Complete with "slasher" movie cliches.

But all in all, it was somehow really awesome and super entertaining.
I know I'll be buying this on DVD to watch again and again and again.

Ghost Town     Reasonably funny if much too cute feel-gooder with Ricky Gervais as an obnoxious dentist recruited by dead people to settle their unfinished business.  Ghost meets As Good as it Gets but not quite as good as either.

This week I watched LITTLE CHILDREN and I really enjoyed it. It is of course based off a novel and every 5 to 10 miutes of the film there is narrration which is actually a plus. The story contains a spiritual message about life. It is intelligent and entertaining.

The Ninth Gate: Another Roman Polanski film which I passed on at the time of it's release. It's educational to a degree however most movies dealing with the subject matter of the occult have always seemed ridiculous to me.
THE NAME OF THE ROSE: An 80's film about murder in a 14th century abbey. A monk discovers literature containing secret knowledge. The literature is Gnostic text.
So that's it for me....2 older films and one new one. I wonder if Johnny Depp is going to take on the role of Syd Barrett. I know sometimes this kind of idea can be overated, however I haven't given up completely and would be interested in checking it out. Johnny Depp would be my choice to play the character of Syd Barrett.

Yes, excellent film!

Here are the movies I've seen this week:

Superhero Movie 4/10
A couple of funny scenes, somewhat more entertaining than the average parody/spoof film, but obviously not all that great.

Entre les murs 8/10
A highly realistic depiction of school life in multicultural France. Thought-provoking, smart and entertaining as well.

Hannibal Rising 4/10
Well, Hannibal was already lousy, but this one takes the cake. Gaspard Ulliel as Hannibal Lecter is like a pathetic little snake and possesses none of the charm and wit that made Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal such a memorable character. The plot is sub-standard and the acting is below average as well. Avoid.

^ of course he has fans, they're just too embarrassed to say so

A Prairie Home Companion     A different kind of movie fictionalizing Garrison Keillor's radio show with a good cast and Keillor's deadpan comedy perfect as M.C.  At first you probably won't like this slower-moving celebration of rural life and its characters stuck in time, but when taken at the pace intended it's a warm and sweet depiction of mid-20th century Americana.  Robert Altman's last film before his death.   Recommended but only on the second time around.

I don't know which sentence provided the bigger laugh:
1. That this piece of. . .celluloid was only "a slight letdown." Or--
2. Tom Green has fans?Wink

I don't come on PA to discuss movies really

But I will just say that I saw 'District 9' this evening.

It was amazing. Totally surprised me. One of the best sci-fi movies in recent years

I watched most of The Secret of NIMH on Hulu today, mostly because I had nothing to do and because it was free LOL. I vaguely remember watching it when I was younger, and it is amazing how children's movies have changed. It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it is easily better than most of the new movies that are made nowadays.

re-watched Star Trek Generations  ..p-u, those films became indistinguishable from the Next Gen TV show

also Cable Guy which doesn't quite hold up, I'd forgotten it's a Ben Stiller movie who would've been better in the role than Jim Carrey

Porco Rosso - was a good movie, consistently fun, but not quite at the level of, say, Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle or Castle in the Sky or Princess Mononoke.  I'd say Porco would get somewhere around a 7 or 8 of 10 whereas most of the others would probably get 9s and 10s.

I thought it was his best since Pulp Fiction, probably. Great performances and really god dialog naturally, and I loved how it all unfolded. It's hilariously revisionist and amoral, with the biggest don't-give-a-f**k attitude I've seen in awhile. My friend said it's basically the American counterpart to a Nazi propaganda movie the film centers around. Most laughs in it are macabre, coming more from "he's not going to really show that is he--OH GOD HE DID!" moments than anything else. I liked it a lot. Europeans, as Cannes, showed, might not.
