Some like 'em, some don't. Mainly, I make my own, but, if an artist releases a compilation and includes new tunes or covers, I will fork out the cash.

I like compilations if they permit me to know some unknown bands. In fact, some years ago, I bought a compilation with very strange names to me (Sinkadus, Finisterre, etc). After hear it, I was very interested about these bands, and I began to investigate about them. Since that moment, and thanks to the compilation, I started to enjoy their music.

I make my own Compilations (for the car) because the most compilations just contain the "popular" songs and these are, mostly, not the good ones...
 
BUT I have to admit that they can be very practical to discover new bands...

Compilations are sometimes the best way to discover a group, even better than the internet: you can download the wrong song or the wrong album (Imagine you want to discover Camel and you download 'Manic' or the whole 'Single Factor' )

That said, not all compilations are good. Most of the time, double CD compilations are more reliable. I'm thinking about Strawbs' 'Halcyon Days', Camel's 'Echoes' or Renaissance 'Da Capo'. One CD compilations usally tend to go for the poppier side of prog: See that old Yes 1CD  or a Camel one I saw some time ago.

I like to hear "home made" compilations but not with only prog music.....

I love mixtures, mood changes, and as we use to hear compilations in our car  I have to give pleasure to all my family and don't to be egoist

I make my own too (I have about 40 of 'em ), but I hardly ever listen to them (except for the two compilation albums I made from the mp3's I downloaded from the progarchives pages! ). An original album has much more value, you can see the songs in their context.

I like collections in that way that they are a nice tool to get a band introduction. If I like it, I will by more of them.

However, I will never EVER buy one of Universal's "an introduction to ....." again. I have never been as disappointed as when I bought their introduction to Rare Bird. Such a great band, such a rookie record!! Stay away, unless you like their period of folk and pop. In my head it's just boring versions of Crosby, Stills & Nash, and I think THEY are boring.

I bought a Cyclops records compilation which gave me Mostly Autumn, Guy Manning, Transience and a few others. It does open some musical doors.

I listen to some pop and classic rock bands that I enjoy, but not enough to buy the whole CD collection, so I get their best of (compilation)and I can enjoy their most popular tunes or I try to make my own complilation by borrowing it from freinds if they have most of the collection which is not often.

During th70's and 80's when I was collecting LP's I would buy compilations for a number of reasons but mainly for that "bonus song", an example being the yellow Focus compilation from Polydor which had the track Early Birth which was not available until Hamburger Concerto came out on CD. Sometimes for the artwork and sometimes because I wasn't really into the band that much but wanted to have some of their stuff for one reason or another.

I dont generally like compilations but they do have their uses. I got into Mostly Autumn through one of them.

If any of you like Mostly Autumn, i have a great photo of me with Heather Findlay if I can work out how to get it on here.

Alright!

To StarshipTrooper: You can download WinZip on the URL danbo mentioned. When you've downloaded and installed WinZip (I suppose you know how that works), you can download the songs from Echolyn on the other URL (by right-clicking on a song and clicking on "save target as"). Then you 'unzip' the files, using WinZip. The music files are compressed by that program ('zipped') and you can 'unzip' them by following the instructions in WinZip. Then you can put the music on a CD by using a burning program (e.g. Nero Burning Rom). You'll need a CD-recorder in your pc and a burning program, but most of the pc's are equipped with that, nowadays.

(I don't know if I used all of the correct English terms )

i like to do my own compilations because i can choose the songs i like, and of course i know which adventure to follow and what style or so... make your own discs and share it with your friends and spread the word progressive around the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its a way of life, like jazz.
