Topic: Verbs and nouns inspired by prog? Posted: August 24 2009 at 06:11 |
Are there any verbs or nouns inspired by progressive rock?
Like, for example
to ozric - (verb) - wandering in an altered mental state, gazing at things with big eyes
example: After drinking ten bottles of Corona at the pub, me and my mate slowly ozriced home
to tarkus - (verb) - to destroy an object completely, as if it had been ran over by said creature
example: My car got tarkused by a truck this morning, it was completely destroyed
muir - (noun) - (informal) a weird and enigmatic person who suddenly disappears in mysterious circumstances
example: Your cousin's really a muir, he left the birthday party without telling anyone
to emerson - (verb) - to show great ability and dexterity to please a crowd
example: The football player emersoned the spectators scoring with impressive tricks and numbers, however, five minutes later the defender broke him a leg as revenge
to kaye - (verb) - to fire someone out of a project with no apparent reason
example: James got kayed out of the company by his boss, he has no money to feed his ten children now
mellotron - (noun) - (1) (referred to an object) an useful and fascinating item that often breaks in the worst possible moment, usually in front of large crowds (2) (referred to a sportsman) a talented football player who is often injured
example: That car's really a mellotron, I was impressing a hot girl with it, with when the engine broke making me a fool in front of her
shulman - (noun) - A person who masters every kind of tool and/or instrument
example: Your uncle is really a shulman, he can use any kind of jackhammer, anvil and chisel
to prog - (verb) - To make things unnecessairily complicated and long
example: The owner of the house wanted a simple project, but architect progged it, making the work long and expensive

^ Herb??? But I take a hint! Now I’m going to the beautiful Symi Island, so no more stupid posts from me for a week. I will try to make a more serious thread after my return (I have an idea). But for this one: Not easy to play along, but I will try: to fripp – (verb) – to be overly controlling example: I really had to quit my job. The manager was fripping me all the time.
(etomology unknown, maybe related to frippery)

jon (adj) - a contrived incomprehensiblity
example: That's a complete jon phrase, I have no idea what you mean but it sounds really clever.
portnoy (v) - the art of repeatedly adding decoration to something until the original article is unrecognisible.
example: you've put some much tinsel on that tree it's not green anymore - you've totally portnoyed it.
eno (n) - a person who creates pointless inventions that no one wanted or needed; the object he invented by an eno.
example: (1) Why would I want peanut butter scented window cleaner? You're an eno. (2) that chocolate teapot is an utter eno.
others that I can't think of examples for:
damian (v) - to leave a group and then rejoin several years later (also known as doing a gillan)
wilson (n) - someone involved in dozens of projects without looking over-exposed.
pallas (n) - a running gag with no punchline.
ozzy (v) - to be famous without anyone knowing exactly why.
fruupp (n) - (1) always the bridesmaid; (2) a perpetual support act.
this one's real - I think I read it in Sounds or NME in the 80s...
gabriel (v) - leave a band to go solo.
example: see that Fish - he's done a gabriel.
similar to...
collins (v) - replace the singer in a band and scare off the original fanbase
example: I see H has done a collins.

then "to hammill" must mean "pursuing an extensive solo career while remaining in the band" to neumeier: wearing silly costumes on stage, hopping around and hitting anything within reach with drumsticks

You know I love Eno? eno? enough? But that was really funny. Speaking of pointless eno inventions you must get 77 Million Paintings. I may have actually overrated it.

I guess that this is a phrase on its own. Maybe we can do something with the words "Kobaia(n)" and "hundin", but I don't know what.
Anyway, I have another word:
vander (n): The constant factor in an ever-changing line-up

it is, of course, "Hündin" and not "hundin". actually this is quite funny for anyone who speaks German, because "Hündin" is the German word for a female dog

hetfield (v) - that act of adding a superfluous "-ah" sound at the end of every sentence-ah.
elp (v) - the act of being remembered more for the worse thing you did. (see lovebeach).
