Found this on Pitchfork:
During his tenure at Columbia Records, Miles Davis recorded an awe-inspiring 52 albums. Pretty soon, you'll be able to own all of them in one gigantic box that will probably be heavy enough to kill someone.
The DVD is Live in Europe '67, which will be on DVD for the first time ever with this set. The set will also include a previously unreleased live recording of Davis's performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. According to Legacy, the CDs will all come in "Japanese-styled mini LP jackets", which sounds cool. The CDs will include bonus tracks that have been tacked on to Davis reissues over the years. There will also be a 250-page book. The whole massive brick of a thing will be available exclusively from Amazon, and it'll run you $369.98, which is kind of a bargain. That's about five bucks a disc! As big as this is, I think I found a Christmas present. Or at least something I'd be wanting to invest in. |

Whoa I wish I'd been enjoying the couple of albums I own more, that looks like quite a treasure chest for someone who's just getting interested in his music.

I've already picked up a huge amount of Miles' Columbia stuff, some in deluxe complete sessions versions, starting with Bitches Brew. Sounds sweet. Particularly the mini LP sleeves.

I don't really know which Davis albums were recorded with Columbia, but either way a boxset that large has to impress!

There must be a large number of live albums too or something, because that's only about half of what the boxset says it includes... Edited by LiquidEternity - August 22 2009 at 10:40 |

Sounds great -- it's a bit rich for my blood, but if it were LPs plus a coffee table book, I don't know that I could resist. I'd love to get some of the lives that would be included.
Keppa4v: I don't know which Davis albums you have, but Sketches of Spain and In a Silent Way were two that got me into Davis. These days I find myself returning to Big Fun and Get Up With It the most, though. Course Davis, like any artist or styles, won't be loved by everyone. |

^I've got Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew and On the Corner and inspired by this piece of news I've been giving each of them a listen yesterday and today. And I like them a lot more now than I did before, sometimes things just click on a certain moment If I was still working full time I'd probably just order that box when it comes out of mad curiosity, but now that I'm studying again money is tighter... We'll see what happens.

It's 52 albums apparently, so a bunch of them must be double-CD's. 52 albums between 1955 and 1975? WHOA!!! |

I'd buy that sucker in a second. Expensive...yes. Whatever, put it on the credit card...I'm an idiot. But I'm sure I've spent that on the Zappa collection. And to have it all...wow. Hell, I spent $100 on the On The Corner sessions, so to have the entire output for $300+, no brainer.

Oh, yeah. If you count double albums, ones like Bitches Brew and Big Fun really help out.
How much non-album material is this slated to have, exactly? I mean, If I already own many of those, I doubt I'd want to buy it unless I sold those. This is all previously released material, right? |

The thing is,I don't necessarily like EVERYTHING he ever recorded. His early period is not my cup of tea.I tend to prefer is late 60's 70' rocked up period...
But the unreleased stuff and the DVD makes the box set appealing.

If this includes albums out-of-print from Columbia (e.g., We Want Miles; Star People), that's really something, too.

What about the cost of shipping? Would not that add close to $75 to the total?
A word to the wise, if you have a choice, and shipping is international, avoid FedEx.
(my opinion) Expensive and excessive brokerage/customs fees.
Unless you have a fax machine, paying is very inconvenient.
Not very accomodating (maybe other shippers are like this, but I have not noticed it)

I won't order until I see exactly what's included, and preferably what mixes of the albums. There's I assume much of this that has been redone previously (Bitches Brew set, Jack Johnson set, On The Corner set, etc.), and I'd want to know what I'm getting. "Complete" is a relative term when there are multiple mixes of the various songs/albums that have been made available.
