Well, the Broncos SHOULD be good..yet they get worse every year.
There was the whole giving away Jay Cutler thing, now there #1 receiver is voicing his....displeasure. I say they're quickly climbing the dysfunction ladder. |

with the Vikings just waiting in the wings.... somewhere it got lost it is a team game... I hope that turns into the glorious mess it could.. and probably will. He isn't what he was 10 years ago... and he really wasn't even all that when he was. hahahha.. .this fit.. perfectly... great arm.... sh*t for brains... Tarkenton did say it best... he has never seen such a supposed 'great' quarterback make so MANY stupid decisions on the field.... Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: How come you don't like me? Crash Davis: Because you don't respect yourself, which is your problem. But you don't respect the game, and that's my problem. You got a gift. Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: I got a what? Crash Davis: You got a gift. When you were a baby, the Gods reached down and turned your right arm into a thunderbolt. You got a Hall-of-Fame arm, but you're pissing it away. It all depends on that old shoulder of his......
If history repeats itself, again, the Vikings dysfunction level will shoot through the roof those last 4 games ![]() I'm also hopeful for my #2 team the Rams. They added some good people this year, as well as twisted defensive genius Steve Spagnuolo. Of course he has a much harder time....he may have been a defensive mastermind with the Giants but it is a bit easier when you have Strahan, Tuck, Umenyiora, Kiwanuka, and Antonio Pierce on your defense.... Roethlisberger hurt his ankle today in the last practice of training camp.No word as to how bad it is or how much time(if any) he might miss.
I don't like seeing any player injured, but being a Raven maniac and major Steelers hater I couldn't help but be a little happy with the news.

Well when they were wining they were "eccentric" and Al Davis was a "maverick" now when they are down they are "dysfunctional" and Al has alzheimer's. Same team, same owner just different results. I wouldn't want them any other way.
![]() However was really bummed that Chaz Schilens has a broken foot and will be out 4-6 weeks. He was really getting to have good chemistry with Russell. He was the real reason they didn't draft Michael Crabtree.
![]() Actually I think of the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions as the real dysfunctional teams. They have both been around a long time and never have been to Super Bowl. Edited by Garion81 - August 20 2009 at 19:16 |

What is up with the Saints? They have that crazy offense, and some big names on the other side.
But we know big names do not always equate to success. And Jody, I woudn't get your hopes to high, sounds like a minor injury. Besides big ben is......well, big. He plays through ALOT of injuries. Funny, I used to not like him at all, (don't know why) but I've grown to admire him the last few years. Anyway, Garion the Lions and Saints may have been bad, just like the chiefs, the rams but they are not dysfunctional, just bad. I think of dysfunctional as drama, constantly in a state of mess and MAINLY a team that should be good, but just isn't. Biggest examples being the Raiders, Broncos and Bengals. Especially when it gets real bad, just NOTHING seems to go right. It can be broken though....I thought of the giants as VERY dysfunctional. All it took was the shedding of 2 pains in the ass. Seriously, can we keep that out of here? There is a Vick thread....
Although I guess it's pointless, it'll make its way into convo regardless......that ass Vick. Dont even want to think of him yet he's gunna be the #1 (maybe 2) talk this season.... And for the record, Plaxico's trouble has nothing to do with shooting himself of course....it was for not having his gun registered with the state of NY (and his FL one was expired anyway). And we're lucky he hit himself....if he accidentlly got an innocent person with that he'd be in more trouble (which makes ALOT of sense) Kinda sad, the guy FINALLY proved himself to everyone, grabbed the super bowl winning touchdown and got a massive contract...just for this. And to think if he had that f*cking gun REGISTERED he wouldn't be in trouble. That's all he had to do.... He'd be in pain....but not in jail Edited by JJLehto - August 20 2009 at 19:49 |

He may have a rocket arm but he'll be crying and demanding a trade by midseason, maybe he'll get it in his head that the coach doesn't like him as much as the other guys and that when the rest of the team passes notes in the lockroom he's never included or other such grade school nonsense.
Don't really care for the Vikings but they are clearly light years ahead of the other teams in their divison now that they've filled the QB position. With that O-line Favre will see very limited abuse so I don't see him breaking down like last year.
The Packers took a few huge steps backward last year and I don't see them being much more than a .500 team. Now, in the pitiful NFC that might be good enough for a playoff birth but I'd be surprised. Edited by manofmystery - August 20 2009 at 19:51 |

You never know man...the Jets have a VERY good O-line.
And he's a year older, so it won't take much abuse to get to him. But yes, Vikings SHOULD be #1 in the North. Don't count out the Bears. Cutler may be a whiny ass....but he's good, and the bears are a good team. As for the Packers...the Offense is in fine shape...they need to get that D fixed, and with the transition to a 3-4 may be another off year Edited by JJLehto - August 20 2009 at 19:52 |

But that is the point the Raiders are "dysfucntional" whoever plays for them, coaches for them and whether or not they win or lose. I have been following this team since 1968 and there is no difference now and then except everything now is dragged out it the press. In other words this is who they are. When they won in the 60s-70s and 80s they had crazy ass players that would make some of today's players look like boy scouts. It was just all hushed up back then. Right now Al made some very bad decisions on his coaches. Before he had John Madden for ten years and Tom Flores for about 8. Those 18 years were solid with I think only one losing season. So no one really talked about the fact that you had a wide receiver go to prison l for rape twice or other guys arrested for assault in bars or whatever and guys playing with hangovers and taking all sorts of pills.
The Raiders are down now but I can guarantee you they will get better and when they do they will still operate in much the same way.
But if a professional team objective is to win and not just make money than the Lions and Saints are the ones that are dysfunctional as they have rarely made the playoffs and never have even sniffed at the conference championship much less the Super Bowl. I would put the LA Clippers from the NBA in the same category.

As I said in my personal opinion I see dysfunctional as NOT so much about failure....I do not see the Browns, Lions, or Chiefs as such. They just are bad....The Broncos, Bengals, Jets last year and Raiders are so.
Well whatever, I HOPE the Raiders get better. They have no excuse to be THIS bad. Russell seems to be developing nicely, you guys have McFadden Michael Bush AND Justin Fargas. I don't know any of the receivers...they have all been traded away but you got/acquired some good O-Linemen and have quite a few weapons on defense, including maybe one of the best cornerbacks in the game. I'm not saying Super Bowl but if the Raiders have another 2-5 win season...well it just shouldn't Edited by JJLehto - August 21 2009 at 12:42 |

here's your excuse:
![]() The Al Davis Experience presented by MoM Productions:
"Throw deep! Throw deep! Throw deep!" - Al
"Sir, we're on their 1 yard line" - Oak Coach (name doesn't really matter, has no real say in anything)
"Why you dirty little son of a b*tch, you dare question me! Throw deep and that's an order! You don't want to end up like the last few guys do you. Now, where did I put my old lady glasses." - Al
Even though I've always disliked the Raiders, I do feel for their sane fans. Too bad you can't fire an owner. Edited by manofmystery - August 21 2009 at 13:55 |

Heh...yeah I don't know if I believe in the "The Raiders will be bad until Al Davis dies" theory.
But maybe he's fallen out of touch. Like I said, they SHOULD be good...maybe his eye for talent isn't what it used to be, or he can't hold a team together anymore. Usually when you have a team of talent that can't play well (the giants up to 2007) being a good example I DO think it often falls on the coach. Who in this case is also Al Davis ![]() He also has a fascination with "flash" and wow factor over solid football players like McFadden and that receiver they took who was not Michael Crabtree but ran a 4.3 Random note, I always like to follow my fellow Penn Staters in the NFL (granted usually doesn't go so hot....) but Aaron Maybin signed a 5 year/$25 million deal with the Bills and Derrick Williams aka GOD has signed with the Lions....... Well, flat out, you are wrong. Take it from someone who watched nearly every game he played. Favre was a treat to watch. He won so many games for Green Bay with his innovative plays. The guy has the best pocket presence I have ever seen. The line would be collapsing all around him, and while most Qbs would be running for their lives, Favre would step a couple paces where the defense wasn't and deliver a strike...usually. Favre is a winner and while he may have thrown alot of ints..you have to be great to have an opportunity to throw that many, and lets not forget he has thrown the ball lots more than anyone else.
I will admit he han't been very good in playoffs since his mentor and guide Mike Holmgren had left Green Bay, but it isn't stupidity as it is more emotions than anything. I would say the coaching in Green bay has been sub par since the Holmgren days and the only thing keeping it afloat was Bret Favre.
Now Favre is older and if you look into the last 4-6 games of his last 5 seasons, you'll see a very good qb who gets tired toward the end and the production and numbers drop off dramatically , while the ints spike up. Perhaps he is too old to take Minnesota to the promiseland, but he is infinitely better than the ones they had to choose from, and, at least for 10 games, Minnesota should be a force to reckon with. Maybe there is a method to Favre's madness, when he chose to miss half the preseason. Maybe he'll be fresher towards the end of the year. Perhaps being safely behind footballs's best offensive line and having the best RB in the game will help Favre stay healthier and fresher for the whole season.
Minnesota may have bought themselves a trip to the superbowl. Nothing dysfunctional about that. Especially since the NFC is so blah this year.
As far as Tarkenton. He's a schmuck. He never won any Superbowl and he was always quick to blame his teammates when they lost. He's a loser. Look how many Hall of fame talent came from those teams he played on compared to Favre. Favre had Reggie White and thats about it. Tarkenton's last season on Minnesota was filled with errors as he plagued his team with 32 INTs(over 6%). HE was the dumbf**k.

In the 80s, the Raiders were my #2 team.. My best friend's dad was from Oakland, so we used to watch the Bucs at my house at 1pm and go to his house and watch the Raiders at 4pm.. I think as Al has gotten older he just isn't as sharp as he used to be. Before every game he was always down on the field talking the other teams players he was interested in, you don't see that from him much anymore.. Personally I'll miss Al when he's gone. Somewhere along the line, seems the Eagles jumped into the #2 spot for me. Maybe its because I lived in the area for 5 years in the 90s, and while I was there that community embraced me being a Buc fan, there seemed to be a bit of kindred spirit thing, it's really hard to explain.. but I never got the reaction I was so used to getting while I was in the service.. (heh, guess this is a bit of a rant Tarkenton is sounding like a clown and I'm sorry, I think Favre with a significant running game could run the NFC, I'll have to wait to 11pm to see the MIN game tonight, but it will be interesting. I'll be watching the defense more than anything.
Guess I should disclaimer the NFC running comment, albeit the smash mouth teams like NYG, CAR and I suspect SF (Singletary will do wonders I think), CHI..

The team should sit Favre for 4-6 games so this way Tavaris Jackson can be the "starter" and "have a chance"
And then after 4 - 6 games (unless Jackson REALLY turns out great) bench him and put him Favre. Even if he can make it only 12 games...it'll be late enough to finish the season and through the playoffs!!!! And the team can look good for making Brett wait and giving Jackson a "chance" ![]() OK, I'm being a goof....but still Seriously, if Favre can hold up the Vikings will be tough. They got a messed up good defense, and a HUGE O-line and of course Peterson. Favre is a great fit, as long as he holds up. In fact maybe handing the ball off more (Sorry Brett but you NEED to let AP run) will keep Favre going better. And I just read Brandon Jacobs is slated to have more carries this year. I hope so! I love that guy. Plankowner talk about smashmouth! 6'4" and 265 lbs of pure beast. As long as those Giants receivers step up.....they will be a tougher team then ever. They added MORE pass rushers on defense! Edited by JJLehto - August 21 2009 at 19:29 |

The Al Davis experience is much more than throw deep. This guy happens to been of the major players in what you see now in modern professional football. In the 60's working with Sid Gilman Al Davis and other AFL coaches re-invented or revolutionized the passing game in football utilizing such unknown things as throwing to your backs, utilizing the flanker in the slot and throwing to the tight end. Yeah it sounds simple now but it was unheard of in the NFL at the time. One of his most inventive plays was a running play, the power sweep, where he used pulling guards. He also was a prime force in forcing a merger with the NFL as commissioner of the AFL by going head to head for players.
The biggest problem Al has is not that he is stupid, senile or behind the times. It is at age 80+ he cannot devote the time to things he always did. He also cannot seem to be able to delegate this off to someone he trusts. That is his fault and the team has suffered. It also didn't help with the coaching hires he made but they are not the only franchise to have had a bad run with coaches. While a couple of busts in the draft Phillip Buchanan and Michael Huff he has done well with Asmougha, McFadden, Russell and Miller. I think Tom Cable is the coach he has been looking for and will being stability to a young team. I am not saying the are instant contenders but they will play a lot better than in the last 5 years.
