Sorry for the title but there is no way in hell that this album is worth only a 2.83 rating. I'm listening to it for the first time today (Ninth Wave is on right no infact) and its brilliant. Obviously I'm not about to compare it to SUSAR as thats one of my favourie albums and gets a lot of play time from me and Idmen is only on its first spin, but I dont think I'll be giving it less than a 4 after first impressions.

Yes the album is heavier and more intense but I think it works great and if I have one complaint, its that Ewa Jablonska's violin isnt quite to the fore as it was on SUSAR, so come on, I cant be the only one that loves this album.

I'm going to be listening to this soon.  I expect to enjoy it.

I shall of course, let you know my thoughts on it.  I love S.U.S.A.R.

The album is excellent, I would rate it ****. Unfortunately it got a nasty * rating from Debrewguy (I agree with his written review but the choice for the rating is unfair, I think it could actually be reported). Since he's Collab it'll take quite some reviews until the balance is set.

I let the review stew for a bit, so that my opinion of the music would be what determined my rating. The rest added to  the frustration with the album's quality, but did not play a part in it getting a 1 from me. The album's review did serve as a perfect avenue to write of what I believe limits prog bands' record sales - lack of digital distribution (progressive music not being progressive technologically ? ) ,  generally higher prices (even compared to other comparable bands or genres), and limited outlets for purchasing (again, even when compared to similar sized acts or genres) .

As an aside, there are one or two Marillion albums that I bought as digital downloads from their website that would merit a rating of 1. But the overall consistency of the group's releases that I have bought this way, combined with the much better accessibility & price , have made these 2 albums simply stand out as bad apples in a bunch. Indeed, if I may offer  a comparison - 1 execrable Indukti album (Idmen) costs me as much as 2 uninteresting Marillion albums & one good one. Which keeps me open to buying more Marillion (yes, the dreaded H era) albums as they come out. Or to extend the point, for the same amount that I spent on Susar, I also have 3 excellent H era Marillion albums (one being a double album). Or - for the price of the two Indukti albums, I was able to purchase three CDs at Frank's Music of other bands (one as a special order ) that I like. And have a little money left over. Therefore supporting my favourite musical acts, AND my local independant music retailer. I won't mention Inside Out.

^ I can agree with that, but what we expect from reviewers is their opinion about the music, not their frustration with the product and other related non-musical feelings and stories. (I say this because I feel your anger fulyy explains the rating, despite you saying the contrary).

I'm also annoyed when I see that a band releases an album in 2009 and you can't get it through any major download store ... but how should that affect the rating? As far as Idmen is concerned, it's available for 16 EUR at Amazon.de - so far only as a physical release, but that simply means that I'll neither listen nor rate it.Embarrassed

Agree 100%. While I think that even extreme ratings like that one should be tolerated, I also think they always backfire on the one who submits them ... people will remember that at least that one rating was not useful to them at all.

I was surprised with your review in that you considered Amazon an obscure and difficult to find outlet, is the place I buy most of my music! Your review was also factually incorrect in that InsideOut have not gone bankrupt but the distributer SPV have, and they were a major company that dealt with a lot more than just IO's bands, I feel that using that as part of your reasoning behind a 1 star review to be distinctly unfair towards the band.

^No, but he was the first to answer in this thread and at least half of his review was about the difficulty of getting the album rather than the music itself. You on the other hand made your view very clear, which I respect, no matter how much I might disagree with it.

you may want to read more reviews. Some actually discuss why they like or dislike an album based on reasons other than music theory. Some will comment on when they play it. Some will comment on how they feel when they play it.
It is , after all, a brief apercu, of what the reviewer wants to say about the album. Heck, I love it when VB talks about something more than just Genesis playing in 7/8 or not when he reviewed SEBTP.

I'm glad that I didn't mention how the Emile Jacotey from Ange's album of the same name reminded me of my Pepere Collette. We wouldn't want to enjoy our music for reasons other than measurable means

Having just listened to it, it's most certainly not a 1 or a 2.

I'd say perhaps a 3 maybe a 4, on first listen.  I need to hear it more.

When I read reviews its becuase I want to know about the album, not the trials and tribulations of getting ahold of it. (Personally I dont see what you had to complain about, it only got released by major retailors yesterday, 6 weeks after its original release date.)

I agree, Andy.

Most albums I like and think are decent, are almost impossible to find.

True, this happens to be a brand new album and I can understand why you'd be annoyed but there's also been a couple of newer albums I've had trouble finding yet when I have found then, I didn't complain about not being to find them that easily.

It's about the quality of the music and recording for me.

I even like Idmen (certainly one of the most beautiful albums i've heard this year) more than SUSAR, although i think they should have left vocals out of the album, because i gotta agree with Epignosis that they seem just silly out of place. (i wish i could find a way to purchase the MUTUM EP)

I'm not trying to fuel the fire unfairly, but . . . why make a whole thread about this?

debrewguy in particular has come under fire in this thread, and I don't understand why. It's a fair review. Unlike the somewhat controversial one star review of STW recently, this review wasn't questionable at all. At least in my view.

So he rated an album you love a one. So you don't agree with it. I don't see how this is worth starting a thread over unless you're just personally pissed that somebody disagrees with your own opinion of an album.

The review you're talking about only took a small paragraph to tell the story of how he obtained the album, and the rest of it went into perfect detail as to why he dislikes the music itself. If you don't like it, go review it yourself and praise it. No one is stopping you.

I just don't see the point in complaining in a thread about an album you personally like getting an overall low rating. It happens. What's the problem?

The problem is not just the low rating, but the reasoning behind it. *Personally* I think it's unworthy of the prog reviewer status. A review is not a platform to vent your anger about the online CD shopping situation in Canada. It is supposed to be helpful information that other people can use to find out whether they should buy/listen to an album or not.
