Having too much time on my hands today, I've made the list of "how many artists from each country" are on ProgArchives, using the Listings by Country (with links) list I made while ago.

So here are the results, and  let's start with the lowest ones.

First of all, a list of countries that are not even included on PA countries list, and hence, without artists:

Antigua and Barbuda
Congo (Democratic Republic)
Dominica
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Lucia
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Sao Tome and Principe
Seychelles
Solomon Islands
Somalia
Sri Lanka
Sudan
Suriname
Timor-Leste
Vanuatu

The next thing, countries without artists on ProgArchives. Unfortunately, they're making the biggest portion of countries world wide. I excluded hilarious entries of non-exisiting countries, which are without artists anyway, such are Antarctica and Siberia.

That's it. Surprised?

I'm aware the list is changing on a daily basis; in fact it may become obsolete as I'm writing this. But I think it's still a representative guide of countries distribution.

I hope it will receive some feedback; I also hope it will encourage additions from "inhabitated" countries.

Another highly impressive statistic, Moris! Star

One thing I don't understand is what's the difference between countries not even mentioned on PA, and countries mentioned but with 0 artists. Why are those countries mentioned in the first place, if no artist/band from their country was every added to the site?

They're countries withou country ID in PA. That means, if ever a band from such a country gets evaluated and cleared for addition, it can't be added under its own country...because the entry doesn't exist.

48 from Switzerland? Weird.

Also, what's the deal with Yugoslavia? The former nation and its successor states are both in here, or is Yugoslavia for the bands which existed in its duration?

Here is my attempt at a visual of the list compiled by clarke!

Unfortunately the source map was relatively low-res and many small countries (like Puerto Rico and Belgium) are close to invisible. Even so, I hope this is helpful in some way!

(Note: All the high-res maps I downloaded only allowed me to color in grayscale for some reason.)

Sort of..but not entirely. This issue has been brought out two or three times before.  I disagree with Yugoslavia entry (not strongly disagree, however),  I wasn't making an issue of it. As it appears, it lists bands that were formed /released a debut within the country's existence, but even here things are little hazy..and can get even hazier if some late 80's bands will be included. Also, there's short-lived "Serbia and Montenegro", but I haven't listed it here (although Progarchives' country_ID exists) because, as you've said, successor countries are here.

This is AWESOME!! Clap How did you do it?

My only suggestion is to colour areas with various shades of a certain colour morphing to another one,  so it can be more intuitive...

..oh, and tiny little Croatia should be yellow, not brown.Smile I'm working on painting it blue in the near future:)

I just downloaded a map from Google Image search and used the bucket option in MSPaint... pretty simple, haha.

I did think of your suggestion but I don't see the point with such a low-res image. I would definitely work on it if i could find a high-res map to color in because yeah, I totally agree that it isn't intuitive.

And sorry about Croatia. For one, I unfortunately don't have much knowledge of Eastern Europe and for two, I was not sure what to do about Yugoslavia and its related areas, so I just colored the whole area brown. Admittedly, Yugoslavia has 48 bands according to the list so the area shouldn't be brown at all, but dark blue! I will fix this soon.

Bouvet Island is not a country. It is a part of Norway and should be credited with 98 artists.

But if you want to challenge me on this..........

Please also give Tasmania  a lick of blue paint. It is a part of Australia. Svalbard also deserve some blue paint as being a part of Norway. There is a lot of Norwegian bands with applications to get submitted to PA so you may have to change that to red later on.

Beside of that; excellent work !!ClapClapClapClap

Alright, I updated it using clarke's suggestion of using colors to show intensity by using colors in the range of reds. Hopefully this makes it more intuitive. And thanks for the corrections, toroddfuglesteg! I also added blue to the bodies of inland water to make the geography a bit easier to discern.

I'm sorry. I think I have a decent knowledge of geography, but I don't known every independent country - or non-independent overseas territory. M@x made the entry, so I included it automatically in my list.

The most Northern prog rock band: Thule from Norway

The most Western and Eastern prog rock band: Somewhere in London, close to the Greenwich meridan line.

The most Southern prog rock band: A band from Chile, I guess.

Now, that's what I call trivia !

I will bother you with one more list I just made: a list of  prog densityEvil Smile

It's based on a number of inhabitants of a certain country, and number of artists listed on ProgArchives. I am aware this is far from being perfect, and the figures are just a rough estimation. Also adding just one artists into a "less inhabitated" country ("less inhabitated" from prog point of view) could change the things drastically.

Let's say you have a country with 1 000 000 citizens and ten artist listed. Roughly, it means you will stumble upon  a prog artist after 100 000 people. It is ridiculous and not very reliable, I know. But I've made it for fun, and perhaps for some conclusions to be drawn.

If a prog band accidentally forms in a smallish country, you will get a very high ratio. Hence the, in my opinion, unrealistic high positions for Andorra and Monaco.

But -- some conclusions can be made. Needles to say, prog is more "dense" in developed countries than in Third World countries and so on. This list shows how much a country is "busy" or "lazy" in prog rock context.

For example, a Japan is a prog giant - everybody knows that. But it's interesting to see how it has been "overtook" by some smaller countries.

The final result -look at the top countries  - is giving some very interesting results...

Countries without prog artists on PA are excluded (their ratio will be infinite).

So here it goes. Smaller the number, bigger the prog density.

Ah! The mighty Scandinavia!

If we imagine the prog density in China on a level of United Kingdom, China would have 13000 bands...

All hail Scandinavia!

We should add to the vikings' merits from the Jedi vs Knight vs. Samurai vs. Viking poll the fact that after one millenium they are the most busy making prog.
