Having too much time on my hands today, I've made the list of "how many artists from each country" are on ProgArchives, using the Listings by Country (with links) list I made while ago. So here are the results, and let's start with the lowest ones. First of all, a list of countries that are not even included on PA countries list, and hence, without artists: Antigua and Barbuda Congo (Democratic Republic) Dominica Saint Kitts and Nevis Saint Lucia Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Sao Tome and Principe Seychelles Solomon Islands Somalia Sri Lanka Sudan Suriname Timor-Leste Vanuatu The next thing, countries without artists on ProgArchives. Unfortunately, they're making the biggest portion of countries world wide. I excluded hilarious entries of non-exisiting countries, which are without artists anyway, such are Antarctica and Siberia. Afghanistan 0 Albania 0 Algeria 0 American Samoa 0 Angola 0 Anguilla 0 Aruba 0 Azerbaijan 0 Bahamas 0 Barbados 0 Belize 0 Benin 0 Bermuda 0 Bhutan 0 Botswana 0 Bouvet Island 0 Brunei 0 Burkina Faso 0 Burundi 0 Cambodia 0 Cameroon 0 Cape Verde 0 Cayman Islands 0 Central African Republic 0 Chad 0 Christmas Island 0 Cocos Islands 0 Comoros 0 Congo 0 Cook Islands 0 Cyprus 0 Djibouti 0 Dominican Republic 0 East Timor 0 Egypt 0 El Salvador 0 Equatorial Guinea 0 Eritrea 0 Ethiopia 0 Falkland Islands 0 Fiji Islands 0 French Guiana 0 French Polynesia 0 Gabon 0 Gambia 0 Gibraltar 0 Grenada 0 Guadeloupe 0 Guam 0 Guinea 0 Guinea-Bissau 0 Guyana 0 Haiti 0 Honduras 0 Iraq 0 Ivory Coast 0 Jamaica 0 Jordan 0 Kazakhstan 0 Kenya 0 Kiribati 0 Korea 0 Korea, North 0 Kuwait 0 Kyrgyzstan 0 Laos 0 Lesotho 0 Liberia 0 Libya 0 Liechtenstein 0 Lithuania 0 Madagascar 0 Malawi 0 Malaysia 0 Maldives 0 Mali 0 Marshall Islands 0 Martinique 0 Mauritania 0 Mauritius 0 Mayotte 0 Micronesia 0 Moldova 0 Montenegro 0 Montserrat 0 Morocco 0 Mozambique 0 Myanmar 0 Namibia 0 Nauru 0 Nepal 0 New Caledonia 0 Nicaragua 0 Niger 0 Nigeria 0 Niue 0 Norfolk Island 0 Oman 0 Palau 0 Papua New Guinea 0 Paraguay 0 Qatar 0 Reunion 0 Rwanda 0 Saint Helena 0 Samoa 0 San Marino 0 Saudi Arabia 0 Senegal 0 Sierra Leone 0 Singapore 0 Swaziland 0 Taiwan 0 Tajikistan 0 Tanzania 0 Thailand 0 Togo 0 Tokelau 0 Tonga 0 Trinidad and Tobago 0 Tuvalu 0 Uganda 0 United Arab Emirates 0 Vietnam 0 Yemen 0 Zambia 0 Zimbabwe 0 No entries for Moldova, Paraguay, Azerbaijan...I hope this will be changed soon. In fact, I know one Moldovan band is under evaluation right now. Then, countries with ONE representative on PA. Andorra 1 Bahrain 1 Bangladesh 1 Bolivia 1 Bosnia and Herzegovina 1 China 1 Faroe Islands 1 Georgia 1 Ghana 1 Guatemala 1 Lebanon 1 Macedonia 1 Malta 1 Monaco 1 Pakistan 1 Panama 1 Syria 1 Turkmenistan 1 Countries with TWO artists: Armenia 2 Costa Rica 2 Cuba 2 India 2 Iran 2 Philippines 2 Tunisia 2 Countries with THREE artists:This one includes "Various", which is listing Concept Albums, Label Samplers and Tributes as separate entries. Belarus 3 Colombia 3 Latvia 3 Luxembourg 3 Serbia 3 Slovenia 3 Uruguay 3 Uzbekistan 3 Various 3 Countries with 4-10 artists: Bulgaria 4 Ecuador 4 Ukraine 5 Puerto Rico 6 South Africa 6 Slovakia 7 Turkey 7 Croatia 8 Iceland 8 New Zealand 8 Countries with 11-20 artists: Indonesia 11 Ireland 11 Peru 11 Romania 11 Estonia 12 Venezuela 13 Greece 16 Austria 17 Countries with 20-50 artists: Portugal 20 Czech Republic 21 Israel 26 Denmark 33 Hungary 33 Mexico 39 Yugoslavia 45 Russia 45 Chile 48 Switzerland 48 Countries with 50-100 artists: Multi-National bands included. Australia 55 Belgium 62 Multi-National 63 Poland 66 Argentina 68 Finland 80 Brazil 89 Norway 98 Spain 98 Prog giants: countries with 100+ artists. Netherlands 117 Japan 124 Canada 146 Sweden 198 France 271 Germany 403 Italy 473 United Kingdom 634 United States 898 That's it. Surprised? I'm aware the list is changing on a daily basis; in fact it may become obsolete as I'm writing this. But I think it's still a representative guide of countries distribution. I hope it will receive some feedback; I also hope it will encourage additions from "inhabitated" countries. |

Another highly impressive statistic, Moris!
One thing I don't understand is what's the difference between countries not even mentioned on PA, and countries mentioned but with 0 artists. Why are those countries mentioned in the first place, if no artist/band from their country was every added to the site? |

They're countries withou country ID in PA. That means, if ever a band from such a country gets evaluated and cleared for addition, it can't be added under its own country...because the entry doesn't exist.

48 from Switzerland? Weird.
Also, what's the deal with Yugoslavia? The former nation and its successor states are both in here, or is Yugoslavia for the bands which existed in its duration? Edited by Kestrel - August 17 2009 at 00:19 |

Here is my attempt at a visual of the list compiled by clarke!
Unfortunately the source map was relatively low-res and many small countries (like Puerto Rico and Belgium) are close to invisible. Even so, I hope this is helpful in some way! (Note: All the high-res maps I downloaded only allowed me to color in grayscale for some reason.) |

Sort of..but not entirely. This issue has been brought out two or three times before. I disagree with Yugoslavia entry (not strongly disagree, however), I wasn't making an issue of it. As it appears, it lists bands that were formed /released a debut within the country's existence, but even here things are little hazy..and can get even hazier if some late 80's bands will be included. Also, there's short-lived "Serbia and Montenegro", but I haven't listed it here (although Progarchives' country_ID exists) because, as you've said, successor countries are here. |

This is AWESOME!! How did you do it? My only suggestion is to colour areas with various shades of a certain colour morphing to another one, so it can be more intuitive... ..oh, and tiny little Croatia should be yellow, not brown. I'm working on painting it blue in the near future:) Edited by clarke2001 - August 17 2009 at 01:07 |

I just downloaded a map from Google Image search and used the bucket option in MSPaint... pretty simple, haha. I did think of your suggestion but I don't see the point with such a low-res image. I would definitely work on it if i could find a high-res map to color in because yeah, I totally agree that it isn't intuitive. And sorry about Croatia. For one, I unfortunately don't have much knowledge of Eastern Europe and for two, I was not sure what to do about Yugoslavia and its related areas, so I just colored the whole area brown. Admittedly, Yugoslavia has 48 bands according to the list so the area shouldn't be brown at all, but dark blue! I will fix this soon. |

Bouvet Island is not a country. It is a part of Norway and should be credited with 98 artists. But if you want to challenge me on this.......... Please also give Tasmania a lick of blue paint. It is a part of Australia. Svalbard also deserve some blue paint as being a part of Norway. There is a lot of Norwegian bands with applications to get submitted to PA so you may have to change that to red later on. Beside of that; excellent work !! Alright, I updated it using clarke's suggestion of using colors to show intensity by using colors in the range of reds. Hopefully this makes it more intuitive. And thanks for the corrections, toroddfuglesteg! I also added blue to the bodies of inland water to make the geography a bit easier to discern.

Here is entire Pitcairn population: You think some of them might form a prog rock band? But you're absolutely right, I forgot them |

I'm sorry. I think I have a decent knowledge of geography, but I don't known every independent country - or non-independent overseas territory. M@x made the entry, so I included it automatically in my list. |

The most Northern prog rock band: Thule from Norway The most Western and Eastern prog rock band: Somewhere in London, close to the Greenwich meridan line. The most Southern prog rock band: A band from Chile, I guess. Now, that's what I call trivia ! |

I will bother you with one more list I just made: a list of prog density
It's based on a number of inhabitants of a certain country, and number of artists listed on ProgArchives. I am aware this is far from being perfect, and the figures are just a rough estimation. Also adding just one artists into a "less inhabitated" country ("less inhabitated" from prog point of view) could change the things drastically. Let's say you have a country with 1 000 000 citizens and ten artist listed. Roughly, it means you will stumble upon a prog artist after 100 000 people. It is ridiculous and not very reliable, I know. But I've made it for fun, and perhaps for some conclusions to be drawn. If a prog band accidentally forms in a smallish country, you will get a very high ratio. Hence the, in my opinion, unrealistic high positions for Andorra and Monaco. But -- some conclusions can be made. Needles to say, prog is more "dense" in developed countries than in Third World countries and so on. This list shows how much a country is "busy" or "lazy" in prog rock context. For example, a Japan is a prog giant - everybody knows that. But it's interesting to see how it has been "overtook" by some smaller countries. The final result -look at the top countries - is giving some very interesting results... Countries without prog artists on PA are excluded (their ratio will be infinite). So here it goes. Smaller the number, bigger the prog density. __________________________________________________________________________________ China 1 332 470 000 India 583 915 000 Pakistan 167 208 500 Bangladesh 162 221 000 Philippines 46 111 330 Iran 37 098 000 Ghana 23 837 000 Syria 21 906 000 Indonesia 20 905 909 Colombia 15 017 331 Guatemala 14 027 000 Turkey 10 216 714 Bolivia 9 863 000 Ukraine 9 228 740 Uzbekistan 9 162 667 South Africa 8 116 167 Cuba 5 602 000 Tunisia 5 163 900 Turkmenistan 5 110 000 Georgia 4 382 100 Lebanon 4 224 000 Bosnia and Herzegovina3 767 000 Ecuador 3 507 293 Panama 3 454 000 Serbia 3 283 333 Belarus 3 223 967 Russia 3 152 555 Mexico 2 757 710 Peru 2 648 365 Costa Rica 2 289 500 Venezuela 2 187 632 Brazil 2 154 191 Macedonia 2 048 620 Romania 1 954 420 Bulgaria 1 901 638 Armenia 1 615 050 WORLD IN TOTAL 1 506 333 Latvia 1 128 650 Uruguay 1 120 333 Japan 1 028 871 Bahrain 791 000 Slovakia 773 364 Greece 703 580 Slovenia 681 529 Puerto Rico 663 667 Argentina 590 212 Poland 577 283 Croatia 554 382 New Zealand 540 013 Portugal 531 363 Yugoslavia 500 000 Czech Republic 498 454 Austria 491 486 Spain 468 668 Malta 413 627 Ireland 402 009 Australia 397 855 Chile 353 167 United States 342 075 Hungary 303 976 Israel 285 923 France 233 910 Canada 231 171 Germany 203 588 Belgium 173 460 Denmark 167 256 Luxembourg 164 500 Switzerland 161 067 Netherlands 141 274 Italy 126 993 Estonia 111 701 United Kingdom 97 215 Andorra 86 000 Finland 66 779 Norway 49 306 Faroe Islands 48 869 Sweden 46 931 Iceland 39 916 Monaco 33 000 _________________________________________________________________________________ Ah! All hail Scandinavia!
We should add to the vikings' merits from the Jedi vs Knight vs. Samurai vs. Viking poll the fact that after one millenium they are the most busy making prog. |
