I wasn't that smart ![]() Growth rate will be in a week or so (approximately 1 months after my initial post). The longer the period, more accurate the rate. Besides..I have to wait for some bands to be added in Eclectic Prog. ![]() |

Prog Metal : 411
![]() Stil, this is very interesting news.
I am more on the conservative and genuine prog side though (symphonic). For emotional reasons, I was quite in love with Italian symph which is now overshadowed by the RPI melting pot.
Of course, due to my old age, I also belong to PR, PP and HP.
Oh yes, I almost forgot jazz rock! I just have learned that this was considered as prog music. Bizarre, bizarre. In the seventies it was just jazz rock...Have the musical standards changed in the meantime???

genuine prog ? some of the extreme / tech metal bands make most of the symphonic prog instrumentalists sound like grade school musicians taking their first step beyond 4/4.
Genuine prog is whatever is progressive. And even a Symphonic prog lover like myself has no problem saying that this sub-genre has hardly "progressed" since the 70s. A lot of great acts have come out since then, and many match most of the symphonic prog of the so-called golden era. But there's a reason why some call it "retro-prog". Which doesn't bother me, because it is just a description. |

Haha. Was it Kultivator that was moved during the past months? Anyway, they had their chances for Vox Nostra. ![]() Good going Psych/Space! Very impressive! And, as usual, the prog metallers (the different categories) have been busy beavers. I'm pleasantly surprised to see that ten Krautrock albums have been added in that time too (I wouldn't expect as many of those as most of the other categories). If I got down to the overdue additions I should be doing, we could add quite a few more to the list. Edited by Logan - August 14 2009 at 14:37 |

Okay, here's some more statistics:
This is the chart of the most numerous additions in a subgenre for 3 months time span: Psych/Space +37 Experimental/Post Metal +25 Prog Metal +18 Tech/Extreme Metal +17 Prog Folk +17 Neo Prog +17 Eclectic Prog +16 Jazz Rock/Fusion +13 Rock Progressivo Italiano +12 Krautrock +10 Crossover Prog +6 Post/Math Rock +5 Rio/Avant +4 Heavy Prog +3 Symphonic Prog +3 Prog Electronic +2 Proto Prog +2 Indo/Raga Rock +1 Canterbury 0 Prog Related 0 Zeuhl -1 Prog Archives total: +207 (that's 4508 bands in total) This is the chart of percentages of additions relative to the number of artists in a subgenre. Note that a small genre with only one addition can get a higher percentage than a 400+ subgenre with 10 additions. This is simply to put a perspective for less inhabitated subs. It may also serve (as a rough overview) which subgenres are presently more "in crisis" or "more active" in additions than average. Experimental/Post Metal +16,34% Psych/Space +13,03% Tech/Extreme Metal +10,82% Krautrock +6,94% Prog Folk +6,61% Eclectic Prog +6,11% Neo Prog +5,92% Rock Progressivo Italiano +5,36% Proto Prog +5,13% Prog Metal +4,38% Jazz Rock/Fusion +3,44% Post/Math Rock +3,18% Crossover Prog +2,29% RIO/Avant +1,67% Prog Electronic +1,50% Indo/Raga +1,42% Heavy Prog +1,41% Symphonic Prog +0,71% Canterbury 0,00% Prog Related 0,00% Zeuhl -2,86% Prog Archives Total: +4,81% |

Anything, it depends of a definition. But 'Art Rock' in a narrower sense, as recognized on this web site, is Crossover Prog, Eclectic Prog and Heavy Prog.

Very interesting. Actualy I thought PM is the bigest one allready (and it was but torn to 3 diferent sub-genres).
I have 2 small comments :
1. It is amazing how small the Canterbury scene is and yet how influencial !
2. I got 3 Haggard albums now (the first 3) and though I am not sure which is the right classification for them it is definitely not Xover. I advise you all to listen to them (especially albums 1 & 3).

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"
