Windows media player from 9 or 10 up will rip in MP3. Look for the Options -> Tools -> Setting-> Rip Music tab. Change the rip settings format to mp3.

www.download.com has always the latest free or pay programmes, including good reviews of the programmes. Put that website up in your Favorites. I use FreeConverter which does the job. No free coffee; just the job. |

Really makes me glad I've got it simple. Rip to the computer using Windows Media Player WMA. Open the Zune software so it automatically loads the music into itself. Then hook in the player and let it sync. Wait I forgot, if it's newly released or fits into one of the other playlists I've set up then I have to add it to the most recent 50 or 100 (then I have to delete an equal number of albums as I am adding) or yearly if it's from this decade or one of the ones I've set up like Wide World Of Wilson, then I hook in Zunie and let it sync.
Sometimes I envy those folks who stick to vinyl on turntable, but then again I love the access that newer technology provides. Edited by Slartibartfast - August 06 2009 at 13:39 |

As others have said, there's lots of program that do this. I currently like using Media Monkey for my ripping and cataloging. I use iTunes a fair bit but it automatically rips to .aac which then doesn't move around as well.
I did some research about 6 months ago, and I've settled on 192 kbps mp3 as my choice. Most places say that the improvement after that resolution is minimal and mp3 is the most portable. You have to have pretty good resolution in the high end to even hear problems at 128.
The biggest problems I've had come from what you're doing, converting lossy to lossy formats. I actually buy CDs, burn them myself, and then store them. Then when formats change in 3 years, you're not stuck using a source file that's already 10x less data.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Good point. I only convert flac files to MP3 as my MP3 player won't play them (and they're too big).

DBPoweramp Music Converter for me. You have to pay for it after an initial trial, but it is the best.

Hmm, all the downloads I've encountered were already MP3 format, though I admit I haven't done any pay to download since the last Kate Bush album was coming out (had to get the jump on that). I do use the WMA format for all my rippings as I read online that for half the file size WMA provides equal quality to MP3. Probably Microsquash propaganda.

Out of habit more than any other reason, I use iTunes to convert wma files to mp3. If you have it installed on your PC then you may as well use it, however, if you don't I wouldn't bother installing it.
