What a strange comment.

That's like saying you don't like, I dunno, "Fading Lights" coz of the album it's on.

Those 2 tracks are fabulous in their own right (as are the albums I might add).

So there!

Wink

Didn't understand the (bolded) statement.

What I said was, I'm not a big fan of those 2 albums(all songs count) so you won't expect much love from me on any song.

And btw, I love We Can't Dance.

So there! Wink

The bolded statement was trying to draw a parallel with the idea that you don't like the Judas songs coz of the albums that they're on despite the fact that they are great tracks.

So, to me it's like saying that someone doesn't like "Fading Lights" coz he hates the whole album despite the fact that FL is a great track.

So, let me get this right........

You're a Flower Kings fan but you don't like the albums "World of Adventures" or "Retropolis" and so therefore you don't like these tracks:

Back In The World of Adventures
Atomic Prince / Kaleidoscope
Go West Judas
Theme For A Hero
Big Puzzle
Retropolis
There Is More To This World
The Judas Kiss
Flora Majora
The Road Back Home

etc

These, in my honest opinion, are quintessential Flower Kings tracks and you're saying that you don't like any of them coz of the album they're on?

I really can't get my head around that.

Both Judas songs are great, and I especially enjoy the Alive On Planet Earth version of Judas Kiss (15 minutes long!).

Last night, a friend asked me to play him some Flower Kings (he hadn't heard any).  So naturally I chose Just This Once (probably my second favorite FK song).  I realized it is pretty much everything I love about the band condensed into just under 8 minutes.  It's got quirkyness, jazziness, a fantastic guitar solo, great vocals and lyrics by Stolt, lovely melodies, and a slowed down symphonic beauty of an ending.

I didn't have time to play him an epic, which I would have preferred, so I'll save that for next time.  He thought the song was "weird", and because of that said "I see why you like this band" LOL

He played bass in my college prog band, and helped with the writing of our "magnum opus"......a 10 mintue energetic piece with 5 sections.   He also wrote a very cool bass driven prog song of his own (the only song he ever wrote actually) while in that band.  He now plays for an 80's and 90's top 40 cover band and makes more money doing that than I do at my computer programming job Angry

He got tired of playing "difficult" music.  However, he has said he wouldn't mind laying down bass for some of my originals (and he IS a fantastic bass player, even if he is a lazy one LOL )

Anyway, he seemed to like the kings.  He does still enjoy listening to "difficult" music, even if he isn't all that interested in playing it (he likes Dream Theater and Tool).

^  Yeah really, Page 28, that's pretty impressive for a band appreciation thread.  We've almost formed a little community within a community.  I've noticed a batch of appreciation threads popping up left and right lately.  I don't know if we've inspired any of them, but I can only think that the repertoire that we've developed over the last half year would be an example of what an appreciation thread can become.  Kudos to us all.

Yes TFK has some great flow in their albums I can't just play one song it is either a full album or a couple epics by them which eventually leads to an album listen truly a great band

My dream setlist:
One More Time
Monsters and Men
The Truth Will Set You Free
Last Minute On Earth
Minor Giant Steps
I Am The Sun
Encore: Stardust We Are

Although I do think the setlist for the "Meet the Flower Kings" DVD is pretty awesome as it is. One of my favorite concert DVDs that I own.
Please check out my Progressive Music Blog: The Leviathan.

Oooh, great set list.  though I'd personally have included "Serious Dreamers" on the list as well, the set would still be under two hours (before the encores).  I think that would be my current wish list if I threw "Minor Giant Steps" in as well.

Great list.

It's my all-time favourite too so you're in good company Thumbs Up.

On to the drummers question.  I really think the Salazar/Michael Stolt combo was brilliant and just perfect for those early albums.  Just listen to both of them on Stardust We Are and Flower Power - awesome!!  And Tom, how about Jaime's drum solo - IKEA By Night - magnificent.

I have to admit Corsz is probably the better drummer technically, but no complaints whatsoever about Salazar, he's great too.

Actually, Michael Stolt played very little on the albums he is credited on.  Most of the bass work was done by Roine (this was revealed not long after Michael left the band......I read it on the flower Kings yahoo group from Roine himself, but he may have mentioned it in interviews as well).  Michael was mostly just the touring bass player.  And I couldn't tell you which bass parts are by him and which by Roine, only that Roine stated that "most" of them were by himself.  But I agree for the most part with your other comments.

I Am The Sun is not my favorite FK track, but is great one.........I recall back in 2002 Roine was asking people on the FK yahoo group to give him their dream set list so he and the band could consider what to play on the upcoming tour (first one with Zoltan, incedentally).  My dream set list was:

Garden of Dreams (complete)
I Am The Sun (complete)
Stardust We Are (complete)
encores:  Just This Once, Retropolis

A nice 2 hour + set, don't you think?  Big smile  (Unfold had not been released yet, or I might have added one of the epics from there).  Much to my delight they actually DID use two of my suggestions on that tour (even if GoD was edited down to 45 minutes or so, and Stardust was missing a bit of the studio version ending.......but both had added exteneded solos).

Awaken is probably my no.2 all time track, so I completely agree.

It's definitely in my top 3 Flower Kings tracks.

In fact, Part 2 is probably my single favourite piece of music from the last 10 years or so. The ending is the best piece of powerful, orgasmic, symphonic prog since the likes of "Awaken" and "Supper's Ready".

Zoltan is a far better drummer than Portnoy.....or Salazar.  But they all have different styles.  In some ways I think Salazar's style suited TFK better, but I just love listening to Zoltan play.

However, if you had Portnoy and Zoltan both playing Dream Theater tunes, Portnoy would be the far better drummer...........and not because he helped write the tunes in the first place, but because his style is perfect for prog metal.  I just think that in terms of technique and versatiltiy, Zoltan is the best of the 3 without question.
