Fair point.   Big smile I don't listen to much 'grunge'.  I haven't heard 'Dirt' but I've got 'Ten' and I like it.  I meant Nirvana will go in the history books but the others won't.

The Wipers were part of the early wave of American punk bands, not grunge. Wink

How about Greta? Anyone remember them? I never really cared for grunge but I dug them. Brad Wilk from Rage Against the Machine played with them as well.I always did like Chris Cornell's voice though.

I've always liked Alice In Chains, so this easily wins for me..

While I enjoyed Nirvana, I never craved them. Chris Cornell is one of my favorite vocalists in rock, but they don't come close to AiC for me.
 
Have no use for Pearl Jam.

I'm not very familiar with Alice in chains music, but the other three bands are great.
I voted for Soundgarden only for their albums Down on the upside and Superunknown. I've been listening to those lately and they're great.
Nirvana is a bit too punk to me too, I hate them when it's all just noise and screaming but their good songs are really really good in my opinion, especially on record. Not a big fan of their live performances in general, except the unplugged of course. They were one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager, now I still like them but think they're way too overrated.
I like Pearl Jam too, I recognize they're in many ways a better band than Nirvana but for some reason their songs don't move me in the same way Nirvana's best songs do. I'm not too much into their earlier grunge albums except the singles on Ten wich are great, but I prefer later albums like Yield and Binaural, more classic rock oriented.

I love the Foo Fighters, one of my favourite current rock bands. I don't think they're a grunge band but definitely started as a grunge related/influenced band. Anyway, I never knew exactly what grunge was about, all those bands sounds different to me.
Does anyone like Smashing pumpkins? Were they grunge too? Billy Corgan's voice is anoying, but Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness is a masterpiece. I was a big fan of them too back then. What about Stone Temple Pilots? Great band too.

I agree with that one. Mellon Collie is one of the best albums from the 90's and STP is a very good band as well.

I like Smapshing Pumpkins a lot, but from "Mellon Collie..." I only like the singles. The other songs I find way too simplistic (at least compared to what was to come) and... yes, grungy Tongue I like "Adore" much, much more.

I'm fairly new to grunge. Just started to dig into it 3 months ago.
I plan to check out Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Mudhoney & Stone Temple Pilots (already have "Purple", and i love it)

^ Not really but same era and scenes.It was Post punk,which was a huge influence on grunge bands like Nirvana.Which brings me to the point of the genre grunge being quite a complicated one as every band mentioned had complete different tendency's.Soundgarden influenced by Early Sabbath,Pearl Jam with classic rock roots,Alice in chains with more of metal influence and Nirvana influenced by post/noise rock/punk.The only really similarities are graspy vocals and Seattle.Sonic Youth are great though,you'll find they can be quite more experimental then the others.

I've heard them called proto grunge, along with Dinosaur Jr., The Pixies, The Flaming Lips, The Butthole Surfers, etc, but I don't think that any of those guys would appreciate the label LOL
