I think anyone who isn't a Genesis fanboy would agree with you! You can more or less discard sides 3 & 4 as total filler!

On the contrary; side 3 and 4 are the best of "The Lamb"! Much better than side 1 and 2. And yes, that includes "Waiting Room", one of the best Genesis tracks ever!

I disagree, I think Side 1-2 are the best, but then again I usually start form the beginning when listening to albums, so I never get to Side 3+4, but really that's no defense.

For me "The Lamb" is a very balanced album. I like all four sides of it, and I have no feeling that there are fillers anywhere. I really can't pick a favourite side.

I have yet to appreciate Marillion's "Misplaced Childhood" .. I've owned the album since August of last year and I haven't found a mood or a moment where I've enjoyed any part of it.
Sometimes, I've found that it may be just a particular album that doesn't strike me and when this occurs I try a live album or DVD (especially if a band has a large discography) . So recently I bought "Marbles" (Live) and I haven't been able to enjoy it either.

Mastodon are proving quite a challenge; I fail to see the appeal after many attempts to get into 'Crack The Skye'. Maybe I'm starting in the wrong place... And there are few old school prog bands which I still don't understand, but I feel far too inexperienced to criticise, so I won't try!

I agree with everyone who's said Dream Theater and Rush... And I can't really hack the entire 'Neo-Pro' genre either, too cheesy for my tastes.
As for bands that are only really popular within their field, I've never got Mono or Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. All the elements are in place for me to like them but they never 'click' with me. The former are stunningly generic Post-Rock and the latter can be too cloyingly 'wacky' for me.
Also Pink Floyd. I've tried so hard with that band but with so little reward

To be honest, I can have a hard time to get into most of the prog bands... When you do, the reward is great, but if the music lacks something it's the abillity to grip you right from the start. For example I used to hate King Crimson, then I listened some more, and it strangely didn't sound that bad any longer, then I listened some more, and they are now my favourite band.
Gentle giant is another one, at first it was just annoying, but then the genius and the meaning of the music appeared, or something like that....
For now I can't understand the hype about Genesis. I like some songs, and I hear that they are fantastic musicans and put it all together. But when listening to an album in a row, I easily get tired and finds the music plain boring, and Peter Gabriels voice ridiculus and childlish somehow...
But I hear that the music is very good in the end, so I am trying to listen to it and get it sometimes.

I think Rush isn't overrated, but just an acquired taste.
I'm not a Rush fan, so I think I'm quite objective in this. Even though I like some of their stuff on Moving Pictures, I never got into Rush like I got into most of the other well known prog bands. Still, I get the impression that the Rush members are skilled musicians, they have quite some originality as well, in the lyrics as well as in the music, and they got popular on their own terms, so it seems to me.
Maybe people don't like the voice of Geddy Lee, or the overpowering drum sound of Neil Peart, or some of the heavy sci-fi inspired lyrics, but all that seems to be a matter of taste to me, and I think they definitely deserve a lot of credit for their work. They made a career out of their music, while all the time they were doing their own thing, instead of adapt themselves to the tastes of the masses.

Aquired taste? You mean for us prog people only? Elsewhere I thought Rush was one of the "easier" and more commercial prog bands

When I say acquired taste I don't mean for prog people only. Just that quite some people don't seem to like them, because they do have a specific sound, even when they're not of the most complex bands.

Tool. They are a good,smart band but I just don't see it. By mainstream standards they are very intricate and progressive but by prog rock standards I think they are pretty tame and uneventful. I'm not saying they are not progressive i just think that prog standards are much higher and they are average when compared to a lot of the other bands on the site. Maynard has a nice voice but not mind blowing like many people make it out to be.
