Good work John for sniffing this stuff out. Let's hope action can be taken. |

fair enough, it just struck me as unfortunate that a reviewer doesn't have the presence of mind to somehow qualify his thoughts.. the review wasn't too far from "Dude why do so many people like this? I mean it's not that good" That's not a review, it's something you say at a party after a beer.
can't argue with that |

Pretty weak review David, but so are 47% of the reviews on this site, including some of mine. I'd volunteer to be "quality-control" if they gave me the power to nuke poor quality reviews....but we all know that job won't happen

Hey David, thanks for your report. It's not Conor's best review (some are quite good) but not bad enough to censor.
Please everyone, take the discussion to the reviews discussion thread, third door on your left just past the next DT poll. |

This actually brings up an important line of thought and distinction I've been struggling with when I write reviews (okay, so it's been months since I've written anything, so what?): musical quality vs. historical importance. No one can deny just how important The Moody Blues's Days of Future Passed was in the development and popularity of prog. However, do reviewers today look at it for that, rate it five stars because of how essential a piece in the history it is, or give it three stars because it's really not that catching, even not compared to other Moody Blues albums? There has to be a level of fairness to all the albums being reviewed. If Conor got on and blathered on and on about how great it is because of how great it was viewed as being, what does that say for his opinion? Nothing. His opinion is a fresh look at a classic. What he hears is what he hears. Just some thoughts. Mostly incoherent, and difficult to type, because I've been lifting and now my arms are quite twitchy. |

This one is from a reviewer. It has few words, but i don't think that's the problem.

This is a good point well expressed, as I also see numerous examples of very highly rated albums by artists the reviewer concedes are important in the development of prog, but suspect that like Liquid Eternity, the score awarded dwarfs the musical content therein. Perhaps the most notorious example of this phenomenon is 'In the Court of the Crimson King' which as far as pivotal prog album status goes, is a bit of a no-brainer, but is a very patchy and uneven album which many of us would deem deserving of no more than a three star rating. I admit it is very difficult to reconcile inspirational/influential with musical merit but I guess that's what the body text of the review is for ? I've come round to the conclusion that we should dispense with a rating score altogether. This would at least ensure the following: No more 'hijacking the rating/charts scams' perpetuated by lazy posters No more endless spats about what is,what ain't and what should be in the top 100 albums list No more (completely redundant) 'rating only' reviews This would force members of the community to articulate their ideas, substantiate their loves and hates and actually inform each other about progressive music. I don't buy the idea that we necessarily have to provide quantification of artistic value for those who can't be arsed to delve into what PA has to offer and READ about a phenomenon they profess to love. This is not the Michelin Hotel Guide, and if the guests are just 'short stay' they ain't gonna stick around to contribute anything of value to the site. |

my issue was with the review itself and how he chose to express his thoughts - which were legitimate but could have been expressed much better IMO - more than his opinion of the album, but I apologize to Conor for being harsh about it.. and this should be in Reviews Discussion anyway, sooo

Ian....the 47% figure was the result of several months of painstaking evalutation, where I printed off every review in the archive and had a panel of my friends review each one. They scored the reviews on a series of 17 different factors, with values on a 1-10 scale. I fed those results to a statistics class at the local high school and then crunched them again to come up with the 47%. You can be confident I handled it properly. The full report can be sent to anyone who wants to see it, the printing fee for the 1000s of pages is $350 US which can be sent to my Paypal account.
Let me know if you're interested.
Seriously, I don't believe we should look at our reviews as a load of slop that is disposible, if we do, then why bother? We should attempt to present the site as a good place for well-written reviews, as our competitors generally do. Certainly people's talents vary, and everyone is welcome here. I realize that. If you couldn't tell my 47% thing was a bit of a joke, then who's being too serious?

Sorry Admin, just realized Ian and I inadvertantly did another post in the "reporting" thread. This message I put here on purpose to propose a solution to this never-ending problem. Could Max not quite easily add a pop-up message, like the one that jumps at you when you pick 5 stars for a rating, which says to the poster of this thread:
"Hey Bonehead, this is the REPORTING thread only. If your post is DISCUSSION, do not put it here as it means Admin gets an email report."
The reason I do it over and over is just pure oversight. With a pop-up, might save you guys lots of irritation.
Thoughts?
Ditto on the Forum Abuse reporting vs. discussion.

I went to the shops today, it was raining, I was there for some time so it was inevitable that I would get hungry at sometime, which eventually I inevitably did so while I was feeling at the peak of hunger I had a chicken and mozzarella pannini with sweet chili sauce and an Americano coffee with lots of sugar, and the sandwich was good and left me quite happily sated although the coffee was a little bit bitter so I assume they had burnt the coffee beans a tad instead of gently roasting them, later I went into HMV to buy the new Riverside album but they hadn't got it so I picked up the new Mars Volta album and an old Autechre CD, but after several minutes of deliberation and indecisiveness I put them down again and left the shop without buying anything because I'm sure I could get them both cheaper online even accounting for the added cost of postage and packaging, of course the problem there is once I start browsing for albums online I get side tracked onto the more obscure and weird so I never really buy mainstream albums online, anyway, it was still raining when I got home and the air was decidedly cooler than it has been for quite some time, life's like that somedays, usually rainy ones come to think of it, then if it were a sunny day then I probably wouldn't have gone to the shops so and still wouldn't have bought anything so the day wasn't quite as wasted as I originally thought which is all well and good on balance as it wasn't sunny and I couldn't fly my kite because there was insufficient wind and the rain would have made the lines all wet, which would not have been much fun never-the-less a trip to the seaside would have been more enjoyable than a fruitless trip to the shops except for the weather of course, so while reviews can vary in quality and informativeness, one of many the purposes of the site is to give people something to do on rainy days other than go to the shops and not buy albums but then you can't have everything can you?

Now I`m really confused.
Of course I realized the 47 % thing was a joke. My point is that if you`re going to let anyone write a review here then expect anything! Hell, how do we know Charles Manson isn`t writing reviews here. In other words, I can`t see what purpose this reviews reporting thread serves. So Bob writes in and says that Dave said bad things about my favourite record. Hey man doesn`t he know that that Rick Wakeman happens to be a musical genius. He doesn`t know anything man. That record is at least a 4 and a half not the 2 that he gave it man. And so on . I dunno. Maybe this is why I don`t really bother with reviews anymore. |
