I know what you're saying but I can't agree. Money is (at least to me) the most "immediate" track on DSotM but that notwithstanding, I can't imagine the album without it and it fits in thematically alongside everything else. Okay the searing Gilmour breaks and brash sax reek of rock, as it were, but I've never thought of it as not fitting the mood. Trouble is I've played that album to death over the years and I'm almost immune to forming a new opinion on it - I guess I don't really listen to what I'm listening to on the rare occasions I play it nowadaysSmile
It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

Ah yes, of course it is much more immature than all those "progressive" death metal bands...especially regarding the lyrics...Wink

Yeah, that Hogarth is so immature... with his deep concept album about a young women found on a bridge, and the songs of her Memories of a sexually abused and misunderstood childhood. Not to mention the lyrical themes. Thumbs Down Hogarth Marillion ES FORE LEETLE BOYZ and GURLZ!

I'm speaking of "Brave". Jake, I suggest you go out and get your mits on it. You might change your mind about your said comment...             cheesey... PFT LOL

I don't listen to lyrics to be honest. It was the music that I was regarding.

And there's a lot of immature progressive death metal out there. A LOT.

Two bands: Tangerine Dream and Ayreon.

Tangerine Dream: I confess I never went beyond the Rubycon, but well, I'm no Julius Caesar Wink
Seriously, I couldn't hear any melody, just sounds.

Ayreon: I bought the debut and really hated it.

There are other acts that are not amongst my favorites: Rush, Frank Zappa, the Flower Kings and Dream Theater, but all of these artists have at least done some things that are really great in my ears, so that I'll stick with the first two bands I mentioned.

That's exactly what I love about the early Tangerine Dream: That they were just sounds. They started to get boring for me when they became more melodious. The last album of them I can listen to is "Poland", after that they became unbearable for me, because the "just sounds" parts were completely gone from their music.

Excuse me? I fully stated they are good musicians. I just don't buy that Neil Peart is the überdrummer who is miles ahead of any others. He is a very good drummer, but there are several other drummers who are equally good.

He's pretty stock, actually. Nothing special.

Can somebody help me to get into psychedelic/krautrock bands ? I'm keen on Symphonic Prog, or classic rock. Well, I need either strong guitar riffs, or beautiful parts. I also enjoy mellotron's sound.

I also failed at tech/extreme prog metal and RIO/Avant prog.

My question is why. Is it something in me or maybe I just had bad attitude. Wrong tracks tried. And when asked on what style was Pink Floyd, psychedelic/space rock wouldn't be my answer. Dark Side of the Moon isn't this style, not typical member of these. Same with Shine On You Crazy Diamond or The Wall.

OK, The Wall is quite insane, but still with great melody, the best lyrics I've ever heard and the performance (you know). So this will probably not help me.

Any help appreciated.

Well, I never was able to get into Opeth.

Which people think is weird considering I enjoy Prog rock/metal and a lot of more music next to that (ranging from Free Jazz to Grindcore to Classical to Popmusic) , but these guys just don't seem to do it for me.

I tried to get into it considering a lot of people I know closely (and which I respect a lot) all said I should give it a shot, but after listening their records (yes, all of them) and listening to testimonials by other thru fans it just still doesn't click. I guess it has to do with the atmosphere the music radiates, to me it just feels like it is all very much in the same place musically and that particular sound just put's me off, I guess.

Sure. This is what you need. That album ought to tick at least some of the right boxes for you.

This is trickier. I can't help you much on the tech/extreme side of things, but RIO/Avant is a very broad spectrum indeed. I wouldn't like to suggest anything without knowing what you've heard already. Drop me a PM if you're really interested and want some advice.

On a more on-topic note, apart from my unshakable dislike of neo-prog (I don't resent it or its fans at all, I just can't see the appeal of insipid pop-rock with a few token proggy adornments), I have never gotten into Genesis and I doubt I ever will.

For a RIO group I'd suggest Samla Mammas Manna's Maltid (don't judge by the mp3 at PA's SMM page), and in avant prog, I think U Totem's debut would have much for a symph lover to enjoy.  In regards to mellotron, I'm not ken on mellotron, but I do like Yugen's Labrinto d'Aqua.  Check out Yugen's if you get the chance.

In Krautrock: Iif you don't know Amon Duul II's debut, Phallus Dei, that is a terrific album, and I would think Amon Dull II might well have plenty of accessible to you music.  Guru Guru's Dance of the Flames is well-worth looking into.  I happen to love Agitation Free's Malesch....

I could find samples for you, but check out the band pages for these bands, and if reviws and/ or streaming samples if avalaiable catch your interest, then search youtube and myspace for music.

Have you tried listening to these:

Coincidentally, I have been getting into krautrock for the last few days, and I have also become a lot more interested in Frank Zappa. Those are some of the videos I have found to be the most inspiring ones I've seen that have been fueling my interest in kraut/avant rock. Have you heard all/any of PF's pre DSotM albums? They are a lot more psych/space sounding than DSOTM and after.

Yes, I'm not surprised, and I think that's the beauty, the essence of that band in a way. I don't doubt at all that TD were a very good band in their early days, but it's just not a band for me, not for my taste.

Ayreon's first ? This was my instantly hook up. I have found myself listening to it over and over again for many times.

But don't take me bad, when I see your picture of good ol' mellotron, I found myself totally overwhelmed by good feeling. I don't like some new bands, they're too hard for me (I think), but when I take it slowly, I can approach them quite in good mood.

Well, for a very big part it comes down to taste I think. No hook up for me at all. I do admire Arjen (Ayreon) Lucassen for his approach: coming from a metal background, dedicating himself totally to progressive concept albums. A courageous attitude. And also inviting a lot of prog musicians to be part of his albums: very good  Clap

It's just that I don't like the music I heard from him. But that's no problem. I like most of the popular prog bands, and an exception now and then, some band that you can't get into, is normal.

Personally, I love all of the Ayreon albums.  What I find funny (funny odd, not funny ha ha) is that there are few of my PA buddies on here who are really big in to progressive metal, but they just can't stand Ayreon for some reason or another.  He is either too "cheesy" or to over the top for them I guess.

I guess it's because Ayreon has some metal background but there's also a lot of quiet & relaxing moments on their music, "Temple of the cat" is the very best example of my point.
But now my branches suffer

I've always had a struggle with Marillion. I really want to like them, but I find a lot of it very boring (especially the Steve Hogarth era stuff). Lately I've been gaining more appreciation for it though and found myself actually liking Brave, so maybe this attitude is changing!

Couldn't have picked a better pair of albums - with Future Days you've got just about a Krautrock holy trinity IMO.

If you like fiery, slightly kerrazzy guitar, you'll appreciate Dance of the Flames - one of my fave Kraut albums.

All three of these bands have large catalogues, but if you like what you hear Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi (Can) Dance of the Lemmings and Wolf City (Amon Duul) and PSI (Guru Guru) should appeal, as should Acid Mothers Guru . EnjoyTongue
It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

I'll give it a try. Maybe it will be aired on delicious agony one day. Or there will be free mp3's.

You should at least check out Stratosfear (1976), Force Majeure (1979), Pergamon and Tangram (both 1980). A lot of groundbreaking music (IMHO) on those, and by the late '70s/early '80s TD was tops for great new synth sounds. And the music became very melodic with the addition of Johannes Schmoelling in 1980. He really helped define the second half of their best decade ('75-'85).
