Well, if you're impressed with Roine's emotion on this one, I can't wait till you have The Flower King. The epic Humanizzimo he displays huge emotion in the last section of this superb song. Are you getting curious ??Tongue

By the way, has Roine's debut arrived at your home by now ?

No, The Flower King has still not arrived Angry.  Amazon tell me there is a delay with the supplier.  Ah well, I've waited six weeks so another couple of weeks wait won't do any harm LOL.

For the time being I'll catch up on Flower Power.  4 listens now (a further one last night) and I feel that I know it really well now.  I'm lucky in that if I really like something it sinks in to my memory bank very quickly with me.  A really significant contribution by Tomas on this mega-epic and his playing has never been better.  There's just so many great parts, I love the choral part, so haunting and atmospheric.  And both the music and lyrics to Indian Summer are really touching too.

Also, a little note to Tom, I love Mr Hope Goes To Wall Street, great synth runs from Mr Bodin there!!

I also absolutely love Astral Dog and Deaf Numb And Blind.

Ok, since I've been only partially paying attention over the past couple of days, I'm doing one post to catch up where I can.

  • ^  Thanks for the nod there Roger, I do love Mr. Hope Shocked...umm, in a you know, musical appreciation kind of way.  Tomas does shine and Roine's solo in the last half of the song is almost as good as peanut butter on vanilla ice cream. I'm a big fan of both "Garden of Dreams" and "Flower Power" in general.  "Stupid Girl" is a good song and I believe that my appreciation for "IKEA by Night" has been well documented.

  • Regarding "Unfold the Future" I'm going to have to give that a few more listens.  When I first received it, I loved it, but it lost a little of it's luster shortly there after.  At this point, I'd have some trouble differentiating some of the songs from each other.  The ratings that I'm able to give off the top of my head:
    • The Truth Will Set You Free - 4.5
    • Christianopel - 1.0  (can't stand this song)
    • Grand Old World - 4.0 (Love the sax on this one)
    • Devil's Danceschool - 3.0
    • The Devil's Playground - 4.5
    • Too Late for Tomatoes - 3.5
  • Unfortunately, nothing else on the CD is currently standing out to me one way or another.

  • Darkshade:  I'd agree with everyone else, there are a lot of jazzy things going on in Space Revolver though in my mind, "Flower Power" and "Stardust We Are" also have occasional bouts of random jazz.

  • "The Sum of No Reason" is a great album and in my opinion, stands up well alongside the 'classics'.

  • Sorry, "Systematic Chaos" is my least favorite Dream Theater CD, though I do owe it another listen.

  • Radioswim:  Seriously man, if you're going to go into a fan boy thread and trash the subject band, at least take the time to use proper spelling and grammar.  You come off sounding like a dumb kid trying to agitate the 'old dudes'.

  • Infandous:  I agree completely with you on both "Christanople" and "Too Late for Tomatos".  I'm also having a bit of trouble getting into the "Agents of Mercy" CD.  I don't know what it is, but it's not moving me the way that most of Roine's material does.

  • Progrules / Infandous:  I use Word for my reviews but I haven't gone as far as using it for each post.  Now if this one doesn't show up, then maybe I'll consider it.

Later all

Well, I do often do the copy, the hit post, which allows me to paste it back in if it doesn't send.  But for some reason that time, I didn't do it.  Oh well, I'll get over it  Big smile

Agent's Of Mercy is a bit disappointing I agree.  It's not bad, but it's kind of almost prog muzak I hate to say.  Still, some songs really work for me, like the title track, Afternoon Skies, Heroes & Beacons, and A Soldiers Tale.  The final track is good too, and the most "prog" thing on the album.  I like the heavy Genesis vibe on a lot of the songs, and I like Nad's singing.  But on the whole, it's not that strong of an album.  It's one case where I think Roine could have dropped a few songs and released it as a 50 or so minute album and I think it would be much more appealing.  Some songs just don't seem to work emotionally or musically for me.

The Sum Of No Reason is a great album.  I was thrilled when it first came out, as I sensed a strong 90's vibe (FK 90's matieral, that is) mixed with a lot of the Unfold feel.  My enthusiasm for it has gone down a bit the more I've listened to it, but I'd still rank it pretty high (probably somewhere in the middle of my FK album rankings).

Unfold was actually a disspointment to me when it came out, oddly enough.  I fell in love with the 90's albums, loved Space Revolver as well, and thought Rainmaker was not so great.  But there were big expectations for Unfold and people who had heard it prior to release told me it was their best work and a huge leap forward.  Initially, I missed the 90's sound and vibe.  It took me almost a whole year to realize what a brilliant album it was.  I think the Meet The Flower Kings DVD helped me to truly appreciate that incarnation of the band (and the style change that went with it).  Anyway, it's probably my number 2 or 3 favorite FK album now.

Hey, by the way.............I'm planning to go to either the Pittsburgh, PA Agents/Karmakanic or the NJ Proghouse one.  Pittsburgh is much closer for me (I'm in central PA), but I've known the Proghouse guys for a long time and would see more people I know at that show.  However, if anyone on this thread is going, I'd love to meet you!

So, anyone doing either of these shows?

I'm about 50% for the Pittsburgh show.  It's entirely up to money.  This year's concert budget was spent on 3RP.  If sales pick up between now and then, I may be able to swing it, but no guarantees.

I'll keep you posted.

^ Sounds good.  Thanks for the update.  Money is an issue for me as well, which is why Pittsburgh would be more appealing (shorter drive, less gas money, a friend I could probably stay with.........though I may be able to stay with someone in NJ as well)

I really admire your capability to get so easily in this superepic. I remember in 1998 when I bought the album I was put off a bit by the length and thought at that point that I would never get into it completely and therefore left it in the box for a long time. Later on I tried again and fell in love with it completely and till now I consider it one of the best compostions ever.
And yes, I completely agree Astral Dog and Deaf, Numb and Blind are also two great songs.
Do you like Painter And Psychedelic Postcard as well ? I do and also Magic Pie (difference of opinion with lots of others, see earlier in the thread). The rest of the album is less to me.

"Garden of Dreams" took me a while to appreciate.  I'm almost embarrassed to to say that I didn't watch the epic the whole way through when I rented 'Meet the Flower Kings'.  This is the good thing about Netflix, I can rent it again.

Regarding Magic Pie, I think I like it.  It's kind of like 'Serious Dreamers' in that it doesn't really sound like a traditional Flower Kings song, but it's good in it's own right.  Granted, I think that "Serious Dreamers" is far superior but still, Magic Pie is good as well.

^  Grin, what, no Depeche Mode?

I think that one of the reasons that I enjoy this thread so much is our appreciation of different bands.  If a poll were to be made up of "bands in Tom's top fifty" it'd just be another race between Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and ELP.  I love it that none of them made it into your top ten.

Regarding your recommendations, Thank you, I appreciate them.  I'm always looking for new music or even an old one that didn't click with me at first.  I'll take them on a one by one basis:

Liquid Tension Experiment - I've only heard a song or two of theirs but wasn't as impressed as I thought I should be.  I love Tony Levin and Dream Theater.  Where should I start?

Clepsydra - I have Fears, I just haven't listened to it as much as I should have.

Magic Pie - Only heard one or two tunes on a podcast and wasn't impressed.  Same question, where should I start?

Cairo - Haven't heard them yet.  I'm intrigued

Collage - I have two of their CD's and they're decent.  Obviously they're very similar to Satellite.  It's been a while since I've listened to them, but if memory serves me, they sounded like an older, less polished version of Satellite.

Symphony X - I have one of their CD's (Odyssey I think) but haven't been in a huge prog metal mood lately.  I'll explore the CD that I have once I get back into a metal mood.

To throw a recommendation back at you, if you're not familiar with Moongarden, their album "Songs from the Lighthouse" is a wonderful Neo-prog / symphonic cross over in the vein of Satellite but with a really soulful singer.  You may enjoy them.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll espicially keep an eye out for Cairo.

^ I too am very intrigued by Cairo.  I've heard nothing by them but their description definitely takes my attention.  I'll have to check out the stream tracks (if they have any LOL) this weekend.

I bought an album by Magic Pie,  Motions Of Desire several months ago but it really hasn't hit the spot for me.  I've listened to it 6 or 7 times but it's really left me cold.  There was only one track that was at all appealing for me.  As a result it's back on the shelf as I have so much new stuff to hear.

I hope all our regulars have voted on my TFK album covers poll.  I know some have so thanks for that.  To be honest I didn't expect that poll to go the way it has.

Next topic, let's make a list of TFK epics in your order of favouritism. I'll think on it.

Heh, I can't stand Cairo.  They sound to me like a cross between an 80's synth pop band and a poor ELP imitator.  Or something like that.  Only heard the first album, but I gave it away to a friend, who also gave it away (not sure what happened to it after that).  Anyway, different tastes I guess Big smile

Symphony X, I had 2 albums, sold them both.  I really like Dream Theater, but SX just didn't appeal to me at all.  Also LOVE Liquid Tension Experiment.  Saw them live at Nearfest last year and the were AWESOME.  Great performance (though Echolyn was hands down the best performance of the fest for me).

Magic Pie I've only heard a couple tracks (here on the site I think) and didn't like them much.  I have considered giving them another chance though possibly.

I can tell you I have quite ecclectic tastes with prog.  Love, love, love Italian prog, from the big names to the more obscure I just can't get enough.  Also a big fan of the avante side, mostly bands like Present and Univers Zero, but also Samla Mammas Manna (who the Flower Kings sometimes percussionist used to play drums for), Thinking Plague, Panzerpappa, Guapo, and of course the great composer of the 20th century, Frank Zappa (though I can't say I like all of his stuff).

Anyway, as you can see, I like a lot of different stuff, with the Flower King usually at the top of the heap of course Big smile

Actually, I was very excited by the length when I bought the album back in 1999.  I just knew it had to be good if it was an hour long LOL   Even though I liked it the first time through, it did take 4 or 5 complete listens to really sink in and decide it was their best song (and still my favorite to this day).

I really like Cairo and would think fans of the Flower Kings would like them as well, but the previous post proves me otherwise.   He is correct though in that they are a Neo prog band that is spun more from the ELP cloak then from the Genesis cloak that most Neo bands are spun from.

I really like Magic Pie as well. They are one of my favorite discoveries from PA.

I thought that Symphony X were a really good prog metal band in the vein of Dream Theater.  I got into them and Blind Guardian at the same time after reading an article in Progression Magazine that introduced both bands to me.  I was very disappointed in the most recent Symphony X release however, as the technical/extreme metal bands that they toured with prior to its release, seemed to have rubbed off on them on the latest album.

Liquid Tension Experiment are an enjoyable instrumental band for fans of Dream Theater, who could do without LaBrie's voice.

Satellite are another favorite PA discovery of mine, and led to me picking up a couple of Collage albums.  They are similar, but I personally prefer Satellite, although I have seen many PAers say that they prefer Collage.  The one album that I have is sung about half and half Polish and English and I tend to have issues with non-English lyrics so I don't enjoy Collage as much as I might otherwise enjoy them.

Moongarden's Songs from the Lighthouse is quite good and I agree with the similarity to Satellite.

Clepsydra is the only band on the list that I haven't heard before.  I've looked a couple of times for their albums, but have yet to find any that were reasonably priced.

Not sure if anyone here is interested but...................

I had been meaning to post a link to my own music, written and recorded by myself.  It is certainly not professionally done, but hopefully it's listenable.  I suppose my music is prog, at least I've tried to make it a bit different.  Anyway, hope some of you enjoy it:

http://www.myspace.com/gusrain

(I actually have a recording of me doing the vocals to the first track on the Agents of Mercy CD.........Roine gave us members of the Yahoo flower kings email list a vocal free version to try our hand at, so I did........I haven't posted that one because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to or not.......I'll ask Roine and let you guys know, if you're interested in hearing it)

Ok, I listened to Winter (Part 1) and thought it sounded good enough at first, I figured I'd put up one of those, 'yeah it sounded really great man' comments.  Then you started singing.

Wow, great voice.  Clap  I'm very impressed by the tone and maturity of your voice, and your page says you're only nineteen.  Your voice is something special, very powerful.  In my opinion, you use just a little too much reverb on your voice on that track, but the power still cuts through the effects.

You have a really good voice and I mean that, it could get you far in the business if that's your desire.

Next topic, let's make a list of TFK epics in your order of favouritism. I'll think on it.

I swear we did that one before but ok.  What is the cut off of an epic this time?

I don't have an unnatural obsession with Disney Princesses, I have a fourteen year old daughter and coping mechanisms.

No, I'm not 19 sadly Cry  I'm quite a bit older than that.  40, to be exact LOL.  But thanks for the comments.  You actually listened to Placid Glow it sounds like, and I agree about the reverb.  I have a tendency to overdo it and don't really notice until I'm listening to it mixed down some.

Anyway, thanks again.  I would recommend Fear and Loving on my page for probably the proggiest song (I play in 5/4 in a few spots, and it's non commercial song ), and Autumnal Equinox (different time signatures, tempos, lots of sections and changes).  They were recorded a few years ago, and the vocals don't sound quite as good to me (on Fear and Loving, a friend of mine does some backing vocals and one really awesome dramatic part).

Also, Winter is an experimental one with delay loops and loads of spacyness.  Placid Glow is the first part of a much longer epic (that's the one you heard).

I just wanted to say that I appreciate the Flower Kings Big smile

They are one of my top five favorite bands for sure and one of the main bands that got me interested in more current prog. Here are my top 5 TFK epics:

1. Monsters and Men
2. The Truth Will Set You Free
3. Stardust We Are
4. I Am The Sun
5. One More Time (and if that is too short, my alternate is Love Supreme)
Please check out my Progressive Music Blog: The Leviathan.
