Perhaps because it has it's pretty heavy moments? I find it good, specially 6:00, Innocence Faded and Lifting Shadows.., while Scarred, Voices, The Silent Man, Space Dye-Vest and Erotomania have there really good moments.

Hm... oersonally, I wouldn't consider anything off it remotely as heavy as Speed King or the opening solo off Facelift or something like that. It's pretty metallic, I'll give you, but I don't really mind any musical styles enough to complain if they seem well-written and memorable to me (I mean, my main problem with metal is when it's done very blandly, which is a bit... the songs off Awake don't strike me as that).

Come on, compare Speed King to The Mirror or Caught in a Web. Speed King is heavy, though more raw sounding IMO, it doesn't create a wall of sound like those from DT do.

I did. Speed King seems heavier to me... loud, fast, intense, great riff, thick sound, that great, twisty solo at the start... suppose it's just differing opinions on what constitute heaviness. The typical 'metal' sound has never struck me as particularly heavy.

I can only think of three right now for myself.  But yes, that criterion works well.  Albums so terrible you're tempted to throw them away, so they don't foul up your collection with their stinkiness.

Here's mine, although to be fair, I like Kate Bush's album as a pop record (which is saying a lot, since I hate most 80s pop and as soon as I heard the first track a severe wave of buyer's remorse fell over me).

You are right. Speed King is heavier. What I wanted say was that "Perhaps because it has it's pretty heavy metal moments?"

There, I think that suits better, doesn't it?

Pain of Salvation - Scarsick
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus
Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Raise My Fatty Toes Like Fishing Rods to Hell

That's three.

Bump

Oh and maybe Tool's 10,000 Days as well.  It's not bad I just don't have any plan to ever hear it again.

The 1-star for Insurgentes surprises me for some reason, Rob.  Although it's certainly gotten very mixed reviews around here.  I was in no hurry to get the album, and probably never will, to be honest.

Quantifying 'n00biness' is self-defeating.

LOL  That's how I feel as well.  I didn't hate it by any means, but there's nothing that compels me to listen to it again.  But that might go for any Tool right now.

And with a name like Coven and with those album titles, did you expect to like them? LOL

There's one or two decent songs on there (the first one makes me think Wilson was merely teasing Porcupine Tree fans, because it sounds a lot like that band), but mostly what follows falls into one of two categories:

1. Sleep-inducing passages at about 30 bpm. Sleepy  Or

2. Noise (including generous use of actual white noise).  Confused

It's a horrible album, and I hate that I dropped 18 bucks on it thinking anything Steven Wilson put out was gold.  I will not make that mistake again.

I think maybe we should rephrase things somewhat, as I believe we're getting confused.

Heavy does not always acquaint to noisy.  That's what Rob's saying.

I agree with him there too.

A lot of metal I hear I don't find that heavy, which I find rather amusing.

I find Black Oni much heavier (and noisier) than most power metal albums.

I knew I didn't like them.  I actually reviewed them because they did not have reviews (I also added their second album, which was missing).

If you notice, I gave their third album a two-star, because it's somewhat good.

The funny thing is, the first album is all dark and sinister (and "Black Mass," the 13-minute "epic" is literally a recording of a Satanic ritual- no music at all), but the two albums that follow are almost Three Dog Night!  LOL

It's a good album
filled with analog-sounding synths.
