I wouldn't really consider myself a fan of Dream Theater, but this album is just Goooood. Damnit man, listen to it!

Yeah, that Hogarth is so immature... with his deep concept album about a young women found on a bridge, and the songs of her Memories of a sexually abused and misunderstood childhood. Not to mention the lyrical themes.  Hogarth Marillion ES FORE LEETLE BOYZ and GURLZ! I'm speaking of "Brave". Jake, I suggest you go out and get your mits on it. Not exactly sure what genre Tool falls into, but many call them a progressive rock band. I could never get into their sound. Something about the vocals tires me after a short time.

Dude im a Metropolis fan. I just love the Concept of the character in therapy the whole album! It just speaks to me.
How could you be a DT fan and not like it anyways? Oh well, I won't squander in trying to understand.
But your wrong, I don't hate DT in any way. I'm angry and frustrated with them yes. I mean, here is this band, so mediocre (in my mind) and so popular, and they come up with this OUTRAGEOUSLY great album. Then promise and promise greatness, only to disapoint me, year after year after year. So yeah, I'm a little angry at them. I think I've finally got all my frustration out though.
I'm even more frusrated right now with "happiness is on the road"(marillion) I'm trying, but I'm just not feeling it this time.

You're a more concept-music guy, don't expect thousands of concepts from one same band. I mean, you're focusing way too much in the story rather in the music, I think. Open up a bit, with your mind set only for concept stuff, you'll end up listening only to one album per band "you like". Not that I know your tastes, but that is what it looks like.

but it tells a compelling story. It has interesting characters. It has catchy tunes.
It's well rounded. Every moment of the entire album speaks emotion. It's ART!

Based on what I've said, one would think such a thing. Concept albums don't always have to tell stories really. An album can also be solid without a concept to speak of. Take "Man Made Machine" by Carptree. One of my favorite albums. No concept. No story. It's just a group of great atmospheric songs that happen to go nicely together.
Sigur Ros's "Agaetis Byrjun" is to my knowledge completely without any subject. Again, a masterpeice of an album. I don't know, maybe I'm not the best at expressing myself.

Indeed you are not  It's just that each album or band you don't like, you point out that it doesn't have heart, concept, etc. So that makes it feel that way. But now that you mention Sigur Ros, I know you're not, but you still insist on the concept thing (previous post about Lamb) You seem like two guys inside one, fighting to get complete control of you, and so far the guy who likes concepts is wining the other  nah, just kidding...

interesting way of putting it. (the idea of the two guys fighting) I think I've got a great way of putting it here. So you've got this Painting, of a man in a blue suit, in an old english setting. He's purchasing a dark colored bottle in a shop of some kind. Earthy colors, almost drab. It looks GREAT (this being the album) Now almost every part of the picture is perfect, and where it should be. All but the fact that someone (assuming the artist) has drawn a purple and pink colored heart, right over the guys head!  This is how I see an Album (conceptually) Let's look at Porcupine Tree for a moment. Quite possibly my favorite musical group of our time (just started listening to Deadwing a few minutes ago) Steve Wilson himself has actually expressed his dislike for writing albums that tell a story. However he does like albums with a revolving subject. Let's use Lightbulb sun as an example here. The subject seems to be RELATIONSHIPS (possibly of the platonic nature as well) You've got 9 tracks here, in what I think is a nearly perfect order. Then you've got this 1 track that just screams out "PAY ATTENTION TO ME" called 'four chords that made a million'. Where did this come from? Why is this on this album? Had it not been for this song I would be saying Lightbulb sun a masterpeice. I see track 3 of lightbulb sun as kind of a red dot on the TV screen that you just can't stop looking at and it won't rub off. It's hard to apreciate a TV screen when being distracted by a red dot, thats just not meant to be there. To set the story straight once again, I do love songs. I listen to them. But again, not nearly as much as I listen to Albums as a collective peice of artwork. four poorly written minutes could make even Close to the Edge only a 'nearly' great album. I just happen to exaggerate flaws in albums in my own mind. Nearly every album that I think is a mediocre progressive compilation, I've held onto mearly for the purpose of listening to the Great songs that are there. I mean, I'm not about to cut the monalisa in half becuase I hate the lower half of it... Gosh I do apologize for so many words. I'm turning in for the night (after this album is over). ^I like that imagination of yours, and I understand, but that's definitely not my style of looking a album though it's close. You're more in the extremist side, that's fine of course, everyone sees a album/painting/movie/etc how they want to, and that's the magic of art.
