I forgot Coheed and Cambria!!!! God damn that singer!!! The music isn't bad, actually I greatly respect all of the aforementioned bands, I just dislike the singers of those four bands. Well no, actually, I find Marrillion to be cheesy and immature... Woah, I just opened up a can of something didn't I?

Captain Beefheart and his magic band, ever since his 'effort' on the great Zappa album Hot Rats.
Also much of Tangerine Dream was wasted on me - went to see them live, was like watching 3 guys in an IT department!

Do you like heavy stuff? If not, I really can't see you liking either DT or Rush. But if you do, from what I read, Signals and Test for Echo have nothing do with technical stuff. And 2112 only the epic is sort-of technical, but not in the metal sense.I always related Images & Words synth/keyboard work with Marillion, I know it's odd, but that's how that album hooked me at the begining. Now I love because I truly find it great. Though my favorite is Falling Into Infinity. I haven't heard Stardust We Are, but I know that in those days they were more Retro, and not a big fan of Retropolis and Back in the World of Adeventures. If you were to check something more from them, Space Revolver might click on you, or maybe Sum of no Evil, despite not being a fan of the later. If you like pretty complex stuff with jazzy leanings, then the double-monster album Unfold the Future is a must. |
I like some heavy stuff (Namely Opeth and Porcupine Tree), but just not the power-metally feel DT give me... Some tracks by Dream Theater are great IMO, a few being Wait For Sleep, Space-Dye Vest and Hell's Kitchen. RUSH just bore me a little...
You're right about the Flower Kings album - Sort of... Not decidedly classic rock and not decidedly prog-rock.

I think that there are very few bands that cannot be gotten into over time, given enough effort through perseverance, shedding of preconceptions, and probable future changes in taste and appreciation.
In the past I've learnt that artists that seem completely inaccessible for a long period of time can become perhaps not favorites but at least quite well liked.
I could name a few bands that I haven't been able to get into yet, but I could never say with certainty that this won't be the case some time in the future.
In some cases this process can take years, on and off.

I've spent more time than I should trying to get into VdGG.
I also should like Blind Guardian (I like Tolkien, I like metal, what's not to like?) but my power metal taste just isn't what it used to be.

Symphony X. I love Dream Theater, but I can't get into these guys. I don't mind The Divine Wings of Tragedy, but V is completely overrated.

 I can readily agree with other contributers about the "I don't get it"-ness of groups like Magma and Dream Theater. What I cannot tolerate is any miscomprehension or lack of understanding (same thing) for a band like VDGG. Simply a cornerstone of English art rock. Put your headsets back on, boys, and get into the swing of things. I mean, do come along!

Hot Rats, Freak Out, and Chunga's Revenge. I don't mind some of the music, but it is far from all of the high ratings it gets. I haven't had them for very long, so maybe they need some more time

Zappa is definitely an aquired taste ...you should give Apostrophe ( ' ), Over-Nite Sensation, & One Size Fits All a shot.

Zappa is at it's best when going live , you should get Zappa in NY , Best band you never heard in your life or Roxy and elsewhere.

There is one genre of popular music, it's called rock. It has huge variation of forms and styles. One of them is called progressive rock. In comparison with most other forms of rock, it's more adventurous, it's hard to understand, simply "hard to get into". But as we all here on PA know, after multiple listening with patience it's much more interesting than other easy accessible forms and styles of rock.
There is one genre of rock, it's called progressive rock. it has huge variation of forms and styles. Some of them we could call "hard to get into" prog. In comparison with most other forms of prog, it's more adventurous, it's hard to understand, simply "hard to get into". But as some of us here on PA know, after multiple listening with patience it's much more interesting than other easy accessible forms and styles of prog.
I don't want to claim it's law, it's just my observation. 30 out of 30 my most popular albums of all time are all "hard to get into albums" by artists as VdGG, Peter Hammill, Gentle Giant, KC, Magma, Miriodor, Present, Far Corner, Anglagard , "Palepoli" by Osanna, "MéM" by After Crying etc.
I need to say, that 10 or 15 years ago, as a proghead-newbie, I would never believe I will love any of artists mentioned above and I would never believe I will know better bands than Genesis, Marillion or Pink Floyd.

Well said man, Well said. Accept, I wouldn't say that VDGG, KC, MAGMA, or any other group on your first list are "better" then Genesis, Marillion or Pink Floyd. Those 3 bands are quite amazing. I think they can only be paralelled, not surpassed. Much like plenty of Prog out there. After all the 5+ years I've been listening on and off with Gentle Giant, I know almost all of the songs well. But I just don't understand what makes them so damn special? I mean, yeah they're different, but I can't help but feel 'cheesed' after listening to a GG Album. Particularly Octopus. I eventually decided to just stop wasting my precious prog hours and give up. I gave it a good go guys, but this guy just doesn't like the Gentle prog Giant.
