I beg to differ.

You have no power here! Now begone, before somebody drops a house on you!

Looks to me like that house was built after 1989.

+1

I'll generally say something like "Experimental stuff" cos no one understands what prog is.

I like VB's answer better. Prog / experimental really doesn't say much when you think of it. "You listen to Prog ? Pink Floyd ? No, PFM, though. Who ? It's an Italian band. What ?"

Kinda like saying you listen to metal and being told "Metallica" ? No , Megadeth, Accept, Sabbath.
Punk ? like Green Day ? No, like Fear, the Germs, D.O.A. ."

I.E. if your conversational partner has no knowledge of what you're talking in the first place, the use of lingo won't be of much help.

I'll either say experimental or obscure rock, just to save myself a 15 minute conversation which leads to many more questions...

funny story, I was talking to my 2nd cousin yesterday at a family reunion and I knew he liked prog because another time he was looking at my ipod and said 'oh! you have Yes"  But apparently he forgot cause it took me 2 hours before he stopped saying stuff like 'oh i like fun rock/ different stuff/ folky metal"  Partly my fault for not being straightforward tho...
