I gave it a 3. We're both really close on the green and blue parts though. |

It's really difficult to find the original version of Pictures, everyone records the arrangement. Which is probably better anyway, but it's still weird.

Oh, and Henry, thanks for the Venetian Snares recommendation.
I listened to Songs About My Cats yesterday and it was great. I haven't heard anything else by them yet though; haven't been in the mood today. |

I used to listen to it quite often on the radio when my mom was still alive, and I think we had at least one album version of the original.

Maybe my experience is just limited but I've never heard the original played on my radio, and looking at Amazon the only ones that include the original seem to also include the orchestration. Which does make sense in a way since it was the arrangement that became famous. Based on what I've heard, the piece really does need that extra color.

I actually have a slight preference for the orchestral version, exactly for the reason you mentioned. "The Great Gate of Kiev" sounds much grander with an orchestral backing. |

Mm. my issue with that quiz is that it relies (by default, I admit. No other way to do it) on underlying assumptions about the genres. I mean, the reason I don't listen to more metal is that I don't find it edgy or aggressive enough. I just don't get that impression from listening to someone (entirely and admittedly unfair stereotype coming up - I know it's not true) bawling out half-assed lyrics about Satanic lotus-eaters of the bleak forbidding spectral impunity with lowish frequency guitars and fast-paced, predictable drumming.
Now, does that mean I don't like aggressive/edgy music, or just that I don't find the same things aggressive and edgy as the supposed norm? And anyway, how much music is actually aggressive rather than just using perceived aggression to find common ground with which the listener sympathises? |

Speaking of aggression, I finally reviewed one of the most inaccessible pieces of music I've ever heard.

From Mars to Sirius by Gojira. The vocals are a bit much at times but it has a really cool feel to it.
