I've never been crazy about him myself...but I grew up listening to country and rock anyway (and I never cared for his grunting and "hee-heeing" between every line)...

I always liked this video though:

Just realised I could check out all Dream Theater and The Mars Volta's back-catalogue on Spotify. So, I'm doing that. Octavarium as the first stop.

Facepalm at this part of an analysis of Octavarium

Quote SOMEONE LIKE HIM seems to draw from the Carpe Diem theme that A Change of Seasons made so famous.

I need to hear it a few more times. It'll either get 3 or 4 from me.

It's great.

'Tis. Though Stravinsky just about flattens every other composer I've heard for melody and attack, and Rachmaninov for personality and beauty. That said, I haven't heard nearly enough other composers.

I've yet to hear that.  I always say that I am going to check out some of these classical songs that prog bands have rockified but I almost never get around to doing it.  Although, I do have Holst's Planets so I've at least listened to 1 of them. LOL

Basically my taste for classical music goes thus:

If he's Russian, and his name ends in "sky," I like him.  Big smile

Octavarium was mixed. I can't remember much of it. Panic Attack and Never Enough (despite the awkward chorus) appeared the best songs. The title track was mixed, and I don't particularly like the effect of gluing a million influences together with prittstick, though there were strong moments. I can't remember much of the rest; I Walk Beside You was embarrassing, and I think Sacrificed Sons was good, but can't remember how it went.

Stravinsky is amazing. He's my favorite so far, but I'm still a mega newbie.

Fight Club is a great movie!

Black Clouds and Silver Linings actually impressed me a whole lot when I listened to it yesterday, same with Octahedron!

While I've not read Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk is an amazing author (his books are very short too).

Check out Lullaby (that one is my favorite by him, the twisted b*****d).

That's one thing about DT albums for me is because of their length they take two or three listens before I really start recognizing the songs.

It is extremely good. I like ELP's version too though, but this is better.

Fight Club was an ok movie.

Never seen it.
