You know, Scott, I agree with you about the snobbery of some people here, but not about the 'random notes thrown together'. Now, I am anything but an Avant expert, but what I have heard is far from lacking in melody, though it may be a kind of melody that puts you off (very dark, sometimes even claustrophobic). I am not into dissonance for its own sake myself, but I have a very instinctive approach to music - I like what appeals to me at a deeper level, whether it is pop, Avant, symph, metal, or whatever.

I hope that you all know me well enough to know that it is not my intent to disparage anyone's musical tastes or to claim that my musical tastes are superior to anyone else's because that is certainly not my intent or belief. And lord knows that I haven't listened to enough RIO/Avant to paint a legitimate broad blanket opinion regarding it. My opinion of "random notes thrown together" is based on my limited sampling of the genre. I suspect that if I were to listen to more and more of it, I would eventually get used to it and probably see it from a similar point of view.

Oh and erm, there's a lot of avant-prog in the database that sounds like classical music, as well as gypsy, klezmer and blasmusik. It's a very varied genre.
The Science Group's debut, although not a concept album, has vocals all about science and it's melodic as well. I really love The Science Group.

The album that I have from Univers Zero is pretty good. I'd say more typical of a jazz album than a Henry Cow album.

They might be serious in that they want to do that, but their capability is well short of it. Put it this way - I'm an American, and I'm not losing any sleep about North Korea's statements. Although I do consider firing a missile towards Hawaii as an act of war, and that we should feel free to retaliate.

The only problem I have with this statement is it is the poor citizen of North Korea that would suffer from our retaliation and they have suffered quite enough I think. And this includes most of their military who have no choice but to serve. I think that in this case, similar to with Iran, we would need to have a surgical strike that takes out the top tier idiots that have the power and not the minions who have no choice but to follow or die.
