This is funny because I always thought this was a problem on our own (Dutch) Classic Rock station but apparently it's the same in the States. Which proves that Classic Rock is dead and not prog because in our genre there are plenty new albums every month and so we can listen to many new songs.
And that's the main reason I prefer prog over Classic Rock. So much to discover.

I`m actually embarassd to use the phrase progrock because many people don`t even know what the hell it is. Just saying that I listen to all kinds of freaked out sh*t is easier.

I understand and apologise for my crappy attempt at toilet humour before. Even Zappa would not be amused.  I don't like to use the "prog" term because it has a negative connotation for so many people and they have limited experience with the music in its varied forms. It's more than the excess and pretentiousness of ELP and the like, it's also the excess and pretentiousness of Magma and the like. At least in my circles, if I were to mention that I'm a prog fan, I think I'd be more likely to hear the erms and ahs of disgust and condescension than the erms and eh?s of "prog, what's that?"

How many times have you used the words "prog rock" in conversation and you eventually learn that the person you were talking to reveals that they thought you were talking about "Prague rock", like some sort of Czech branch of rock music? Happened to me twice recently!

Meh. Most of my friends listen to progressive music, and I've never once heard anyone bag it out in real life. So I don't get this notion of there being some kind of prejudice against progressive rock fans. There's more popular progressive bands out there now than there has been in a long, long time - especially over the heavier side of things.

What about this?
I believe is embarasment to admit you like American Idol or being a hardcore fan of Justin Timberlake, because people know what kind of crap it is.

Glad you brought this up. When, on a day in my life, one person makes me, or attempts to make me, feel like a "weirdo" for saying I listened to Close to the Edge on the way to work, then later I observe some other person tell someone they watched "Idol" last night, or even God forbid voted, I think to myself, "shouldn't they be embarassed, aren't they the weirdos?" And I know I'm right... but "they" have the numbers. So you live with it. Ef 'em. Hardcore fans of the commercial-mill crap are really just semi-human scaffolding, agreed for some horrifying reason to put themselves in place so that a monumental tower of sh*te may stand seemingly for all eternity. And I too think that "people [people who don't give up their lives and identities in this way] know what kind of crap it is" for the most part.

Don`t get me wrong here. I just said it`s easier to say I listen to all kinds of freaked out s**t. This way it could mean anything from Metal Elvis to Brainticket. You`re safe this way. I have an occasional radio show and everyone there refers to me as the guy that plays the freaky sh*t. No Bob Marley, Indie Crap or Leonard Cohen, just the freaky sh*t. I can even play Siberian Khatru and call it freaky sh*t and then it becomes more acceptable to people.
As for American idol I think Cheryl Crow summed it up perfectly once she said, " Let`s face it, it undermines artand promotes commercialism. I am sad that people love it so". Or Ronnie James Dio, he refered to American Idol as American Karioke in 2006 saying, "Most people who watch American Idol are under 13 years old. Those who are over 13 years old have the brains of 10 year olds. " Not really fair to 10 year olds but I get the guy`s gist.

Don't referred to you precisely Melt, when I use the word YOU, Im talking in what we know (In Spanish) as second impersonal persom, I use the word you to involve more the reader, I don't think Melt 88 as a person listens American Karaoke or Justin Timberlake, , but just use an impersonal second person.

One problem lies in the term 'Progressive Rock' itself. For the casual music listener, if they've ever even heard of it, it often means an obscure branch of popular music from the eary seventies that died when Punk started.
For that quite large group it would be akin to listening to the seventies equivalent of Frank Sinatra and Elvis non-stop, just not quite so good.

I hate the persecution too though, I find a lot of people consider people who like prog pretentious and so forth when we arent! we just like a different style of music than them!!!

As poor as American idol could be, taking the opinion of Dio as the definitive word in musical tastes is even more 10-year-old-ish..... The guy can sing.... and let's keep it at that.
If we were to perform a psycological test of Dio, we would find out he's the one stuck in adolecence... Adult people don't judge stupidity because of musical tastes...
It's a fact then: the title of this thread is ABSOLUTELY TRUE.
