Which albums? Because Hackett has spent time in different areas. Please don't say you don't get into Acolyte... PS. Great smiley!

Man a lot of people got into arguments during this poll I hope I don't!
Anyways I agree with snowdog about Magma. The only album I ever semi-liked was K.A.

1)I must agree, I didn't get to anything I've listened from Steve Hackett. But I love 70s era Genesis :-) (which isn't anything unussual, I know). And yeah, it is also Acolyte. Maybe I was in bad moon in that time, I've tried it only once. But one thing I know for sure, there were different albums and on that, I was hooked instantly.
So please, don't be surprised. I'm not surprised that you like Mars Volta and Larks Aspic too :-) remember, take it easy, don't take this as flame, because it is not meant to be 2)I though that Anglagard (with these insane nordic letters) will be hard to get into, but it was not. It was love on first sight. I'm confused, after all I've read about toughness of it.

If you have something to say to my previous post, please say it. In fact, I'll be glad for some help on these topics:
How to get into The Mars Volta in ten steps ? In other words - which album will be the best for me ? Something accessible please. And same question with Steve Hackett. To be productive :-)

1. Drink coffee.
2. Drink more coffee.
3. drink Red Bull.
4. Drink more red bull.
5. Take amphetamines
6. Take more amphetamines
7. Sniff cocaine
8. Sniff cocaine
9. try racehorses' stimulants
10. repeat 1 through 10 twice
Then you'll be in the same "zone" as the drummer, you'll adapt to his style and you may well enjoy TMV

Dinner's on the table, but I'll quickly say that Hackett's "Voyage" is in a way the lost Genesis album. Think of it that way. You say you gave it a half-hearted listen before, please listen again. Yeah sure, it has classical elements (I love them but maybe not you), soft moments, but it is so well put together, so smart how themes link all over the place. To be honest the rest of his output takes a drop-off for me; don't hurt me people, but I'm not nearly as into the rest of it as I am "Voyage."

The -Not-Really-Prog: Coheed and Cambria (yuck!) Iron Maiden (just sounds like 80's metal to me) Mastodon (maybe I just need to try a little harder) Metallica (same as Iron Maiden) Muse (nothing sounds very memorable or unique) Radiohead (same as Muse)
The-Sort-of-Prog: The Moody Blues (some stuff is pretty good but it's not consistent) Sigur Ros (I can't quite understand why they are so popular) Styx (sound like uninteresting pop rock) Supertramp (same as Styx)
The-True-Prog: Can (I just don't get it...) ELP (they are musically gifted but I don't find any of it particularly interesting) Van der Graaf Generator (5 albums and they still do little for me) Most Neo-Prog (catchy, but not very memorable)
Most Prog Metal (not post or experimental metal, but bands like King's X or DT) Most Progressive Electronic (maybe I just need to start in the right place...)
I don't mean to criticize any of the musicianship of these bands...just personal tastes.
I agree that music can take a few listens before you really get it. When I first head ItCotCK, I though to myself, "what the hell is this?"

I would agree if someone called "Pawn Hearts" a weird album, but the rest in the discography of VdGG is pretty normal, at least to my ears.

Now we're talking ! I almost started doubting myself reading all those enthusiastic comments about Pawn Hearts. At least you agree it's weird. Some even call it great music !
On the other hand I can agree with you that other albums by VDGG are more like ... normal. Godbluff is not weird at all for instance and a pretty normal and fine album. |
Don't get me wrong; I would give "Pawn Hearts" five stars. I am not afraid of weirdness; on the contrary, I welcome it.
|
In that case a small test now: which GG stream track (on PA) do you like best ? I guess it would be Knots as I think it's the weirdest of the lot. I pick Prologue since it's the most accessible one.
(Unless of course you're not into Gentle Giant at all )

Knots isn't weird in a good way, though. I can't take it seriously.
I don't understand why someone who is interested in music should care about accessibility. Accessibility is for people who don't have the time or inclination to listen to something deeply. Now if you can't like free jazz, then fine, your loss, but making it "accessible" won't change that.

By George, what a nice prog list. All of them are the finest prog bands of all time (at least, they are considered to be). You say, you're a Progger?can't believe. (joking) P.S. Just pretty nice list - all my favourite bands are here (except for VDGG)

Pendragon-I just can't stand with this kind of sweet, easy listening, quite kitschy prog-rock;
Dream Theatre- technically very high but thats all...and this vocal...oh no!
Symphony X, Iron Maiden, Metallica-the same thing like with DT, just effects, no soul;
my kings of prog: VDGG, King Crimson, Gabriel's Genesis, SBB (-to the east of Berlin) and couple less known bands;

For me it's Gentle Giant. I picked up 'Octapus' and 'For the Power and Glory', and I just don't know what it is, but it just dosen't work for me. I just can't 'get into the music' so to speak. Perhaps its the length of the tracks being so short, perhaps its the chopped chaotic rhythums that they keep, which is odd since I love when King Crimson does it. There are a few tracks that I love, being 'Think of me with Kindness' but it just doesn't speak to me as 'progressive'. And yet, I still try and try to enjoy the music to the point that I see other proggers do.

I agree, They are full of talented musicians that sing about stupid stuff that we laughed at when we were 7 years old. I could never understand the huge fanbase that Zappa generates.
|
Maybe the huge fanbase that he has generated is because he really was a genius, musically speaking. Come on people what albums have you listened by him to "testify" that? I mean, okay, if you heard a good bunch then fine, but if you haven't heard any of his classics it's pretty much absurd to say such things.
|
I have heard a great deal of Zappa, and everything I have heard had lyrics "I just can't get into". I agree, and stated, that they have great musicians, but please, before saying my opinion is absurd, allow me to listen to some of your suggestions that may sway my opinion of Zappa the other way. I'm always open.
