Even if Queen had never existed, they would still be better than Styx to me

Could Styx do something like Prophet's Song?....doubt it, but Queen could do something like Miss America

I went for Styx. Queen made about 10 very good/great songs and the rest is wasted on me.
Styx is more prog related than Queen in my opinion. Queen never made a great and quite prog related album like Pieces of Eight for instance.
In percentages:
Queen: 85% pop, 15% prog
Styx: 65% pop, 35% prog

I'm going Styx, not only because I've seen them live, but because I prefer their style. I do like Queen a lot, though.

Both brilliant bands, for me they were very much a "gateway drug" to progressive rock.
Queen would win, if considering how experimental they really were - they always moved on and evolved their sound, and are responsible for what is likely the most successful hybrid of classical and rock music (Bohemian Rhapsody). Styx took it more from the arena rock/pop approach, but also came up with some of the best songs of that kind...
Both were responsible for some embarrassingly cheesy music as well, but more than made up for it with their good moments. Styx's last album, also, is arguably one of their best since their peak moments in the early 80's, and I enjoy it more than most Queen albums.
So, really I can't vote for one over another...two brilliant bands...

I actually really like STYX. They're one of my favorite bands. Probably more Art Rock than Progressive Rock, but the same goes for Queen. The Grand Illusion is a really great album and one of my favorites. Also, Freddy Mercury has nothing on Dennis deYoung. He has one of the best voices in rock music and he's also probably a better keyboardists.
A little bit of Queen goes a long way, but I can listen to a lot of STYX and still want more.
Late STYX is really not that great though... (ha ha but Mr. Roboto is kind of fun)

Both bands have their great moments and their bad moments. Styx had 4 or 5 strong albums in a row there so I will vote for them.

I voted "can't decide" because...well...I can't decide. I have all the 70s LPs by both bands and I could take out any one of them today and play it all the way through.
More recently, I picked up Queen "Stone Cold Classics" and Styx "Big Bang Theory". The Queen collection opens with "Stone Cold Crazy" (which is a foot tapper even if you're in a coma) and goes through most of their big hits and then you get to track 11, "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" which has one of the best Brian May solos I've ever heard. I have no comment on the two bonus tracks with Paul Rogers.
Styx "Big Bang Theory" is an interesting collection of cover songs that closes with an excellent six and a half minute version of "Blue Collar Man". This song along with "Too Much Time On My Hands" are two of my all-time favorites by Styx. These are covers rather than originals with everything from Procol Harum to Jimi Hendrix but the songs really show off the talent and musicianship of Tommy Shaw and James Young.

Queen is one of the greatest bands ever, and my personal favorite. They are about as fun and entertaining as you get.
Styx did some good stuff, but a lot of it came off as second-rate pop-prog to me.
Queen, by a lot, in this poll.

who in their right mind would vote for Styx? They have 2 songs of note and one is only tolerable when sung by South Park's Eric Cartman (the other is Renegade).
Queen has a handfull of great songs and quite a few other good ones plus, "We Are the Champions" has been played quite often in these parts recently.

I can't believe Queen is twice as popular as Styx amongst proggers. I'd think it would at least be a tie

For me its Queen by a long shot. The musicianship in thier early works is amazing. Brian May is one of the greatest guitarist ever. Freddies voice is so full of emotion and he has great range. Roger Taylor is a good drum player and John Deacon can pull some surprises out of that bass. Queen have made some truely epic prog related albums. Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack, and Night at the Opera are just spilling over with various styles and influences.
