Ha, Rob and I are already ahead of you at that chapter. Wink

Well, technically, I'm still waiting for it.

Rob said it's very good, sounding like it surpasses Singularity or the past recent works.

Singularity is a great album.  This could be interesting...

However, Rob has different Hammill taste to me.

He likes stuff I'm not so keen on and vice-versa.

I love Singularity but he's not as keen on it as I am.

Tomorrow evening we'll be thinking of you, James, when we see Hammill and the rest of VDGG performing at NEARFestWink!

Nice.

I've seen VdGG twice before though. Wink

I would love to see Hammill solo though.

By the way, the bad news I reported a few days ago may have actually turned into good news.  I shall confirm for sure later this evening.

So I'm happy at the moment.

Singularity's really quite interesting; probably a four for me; the more unusual melodo-electronic (Of Wire, Of Wood etc.) stuff he does on it is excellent, as are his more introspective moments, Famous Last Words and Our Eyes Give It Shape. Vainglorious Boy is one of those songs I can never decide whether I like, and some of his calmer ones aren't 100% convincing, but still, it's a safe 4 and a very good album.

VdGG is playing NY on Sunday. That also happens to be Father's day, so I'm going to be spending time with my family. That's a terrible date for a concert, it's unfair

You're already confusing me/us, so best to hear from you in the evening.

Rob, a question:

Is Hammill's pronunciation of "defecation" (as per Still Life) deliberate?  I know no other person who pronounces it that way, so I was presuming it was just for affect?

I'd assume so, given it's done on the live Vital as well, and yeah, I probably wouldn't pronounce defecating like that either and my accent is far too posh for my liking. I don't know, though, it seems like one of those words I'd pronounce differently if I used it more often.

breathing, eating, de-fecating,
Spewing, drinking, spewing sleeping
Sinking ever down and down and ultimate-
ly passing away time.

The effect, I guess, is making the vowel sound in line with breath and eat (and creating a nice -v/-v/-v/-v trochaic quadrameter for the first line) and thereafter I can't scan it very well, though the slowed trochaic (I think) quadrameter of the next line is equally neat. I need to read about English scansion sometime.

Yes, pronouncing it as "de-fecating" means it rhymes better with Breathing and Eating.  There's a long "E" sound in all three.

Erm, line two isn't right... he doesn't say "spewing" twice, I don't think.

I must say though, that's one of my favourite verses in any song.  So cleverly written.

I've no idea why Rico doesn't like "Still Life" that much. Ermm

Hammill's new album,Thin Air, is quite possibly his best since Black Box.Then again,I've been saying that with each release over the past few albums.Thin Air is exactly what you want from a Hammill album.Sinister beauty with a healthy dollop of angst but it also has 'that' atmosphere that has been lacking in his work for a very long time.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

Excellent news then.  Thanks Lee.

I shall see about purchasing it as soon as possible.  I think I may get it from Amazon, as I doubt my local H.M.V. will have it.

Some of 'Thin Air' reminds me of 'Silent Corner...' and 'In Camera'.
Distorted self-harmonising vocals,FX and that 'Fripp-style' guitar drone.
In fact, there is more guitar on this album than on any of his albums for quite a while.
