Makes me think of one of the Crimson guys' signatures with the pic of the beautiful girl and the ELP cover - more fantasy than a complete collection of Tolkien
Seriously - your music is your music and no-one can take it away from you. Add to it, but never, ever let anybody's influence subtract from it. When it comes to tunes Alastair Crowley had it right: Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law.

Let's all create a Waco temple of prog and.... (you know what happens next..) |
I have to say I agree with Teo. For Pete's sake, people, it's MUSIC, not something your life depends upon! As much as I love music, I recognize there are much bigger things in life to get upset about. I definitely don't feel put upon, let alone 'inferior', because most of the people I know don't like prog, or are just not interested in it. As long as we have other topics to talk about, it's perfectly OK with me. I like what I like, and don't expect others to share my inclinations. People who have low self-esteem because they like prog are lucky, because they don't have any more serious reasons to feel that way.

It's so funny how efficient the human ego is to preserve it's own values. I read a lot of replies here and I think: Do we really need to think we are so special? One of the reasons I started to listen to prog was that I wanted to have something for myself, something I really liked! I wanted to find my own way of life without being told what to by other people. And then.. here we are... saying that WE are so enlighted and that OUR GROUP is so smart... shame on us... My purpose was to find good music, not to find a way to outsmart everyone. MInd your Ego! The thinking brain was only invented by evolution as a way to servive, not to become our way of life. Some people feel like they are attacked when you say you don't like their favourite albums (for instance: I don't like Dark Side of the Moon at all!). This is just your ego defending, for a lot of people belief they are their ego's and an attack on the ego becomes an attack on their being. This is a serious problem in our community.

The first revolution led by (as an old friend would say) acne-faced virgins...the sh*t is going to HIT THE FAN, they've come with a huge bone to pick - the lack of popularity, the sexual frustration, the armchair Leninist ideals, it's gonna CHANGE TEH WURLLD.
I better batten down the hatches and safely hide all of my beloved country rock...and all non-prog for that matter. The militants have been known destroy anything without Roger Dean artwork.

I never associated any of the music I play with self-esteem ... how strange this sounds to me ...
I do think that a lot of comments are based on the "I like chocolate" and "you can't have it" mentality that sometimes assumes that you can not enjoy chocolate and that your wording for liking chocolate is not the right language to talk about chocolate ... and that is the problem with chocolate ... not the person!
Some of the conversations here are handled and discussed and often times replied in the chocolate manner ... and that is sad ... we defend our egos that way ... don't we?
If we want the art to make it, the egos will have to be dissolved and we need to discuss the art in it ... I may not like Metalicca and make fun of it ... but that does not give me the right to say they can not play music and sell it ... yes they can ... and they are professional enough to do so ... just not my flavor or chocolate!

I think I have enough self-esteem to not care about the general disliking or ignorance of the so-called prog-rock. After all, I've been a metalhead for 15 years without caring for what people said. Yeah, I still listen to Sepultura and Yes and I listen to free jazz, operas, hip-hop... So, the only problem is to make understand to a "Rock intelligentsia" that the history of Rock Music is a matter of study, not a matter of "good taste".

I remember someone here telling: Prog is the music for ones who can't pick-up chicks... That's where our low self-esteem comes from, I guess

At least one is a loser, generally, if one tries to pick up chicks using prog as a lure. Try John Lee Hooker, and bring lots of Johnny Cash to close the deal.

Friends, Countrymen ( & women) the time has come for a dictatorship of the Progetariat ! Once the proper order of things has been put in place, we will dictate what people like. OF course, those who disagree or dissent will have to be dealt with. And then, those of us who show signs of counter-revolution will need to be taken care of.
Or, we can just understand that each person has their own likes and dislikes, with one no better than the other. Unless there's a psychological need that some need to be convinced that having differing tastes is no reason for a lack of self esteem.

i agree on the part we are under torture to listen the majority of sh*ty music out there, but i cannot agree we are considered lesser forms of life, most of the people i know don't listen prog . cos it was to borring and complicated for their narrow mind to apprehend .. also awkward music.. But how can another underestimate us Proggers and despice our music when he himself listen to lowest form of music to say rap or pop .. i don't see a reason why we can have low self esteem ,my music just gives me that great feeling of self confidence .. i enjoy prog and just don't give a penny what other listen .. BTW let's unite and take over the world .. and make it Prog world ..

Don't worry. I'll take care of the rap thing...
The way rappers use the human voice as a musical element is actually quite unique and remarkable. As a rhythmic instrument it's definitely my favorites, because one can experiment with all these different tones and express any emotion easily. Unlike in other styles of vocal music where the lyrics are usually built within the melody, in Hip Hop it's in the rhythm - which actually insinuates that when done right, rapping is more versatile than drumming. But there's more: when the rhythm is put into rhyme, the correspondence of sound actually makes it "flow" beautifully.
I can't say I'm surprised that PA members don't like Hip Hop beats very much. After all, they are similar to standard Rock 'n Roll: loud and minimalistic. But of all the genres that focus on hard-hitting beats, "hooks and loops", Hip Hop is still without a doubt my absolute favorite. I guess it's a question of taste, but I'm in love with filthy sounding music! I also prefer a clever arrangement of samples from various sources (rock, jazz, prog, funk, etc.) to that boring old guitar riff.
Even if you're one of those who just like to sit back and marvel at the technique of the musicians, Hip Hop still has something to offer! There are MC's like The Gift of Gab, Lateef the Truthskeaper and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony if you want to go "how do they do that?". Plus rappers have attitude!
And do I even have to mention Hip Hop as a performance art? |
Rap at its best is poetry, and I have heard some that was intricate, rhythmically complicated, and insightful. It's not my style, but I can respect an artist for creating something worthwhile. Unfornutately, most Rap we hear is gangsta style where all it's about is how much money, chicks, and bling the dude has. I don't have much use for that.

Actually, I find that Prog Related generally goes over very will with women. But I've been lucky to know several women that like prog, though I'm don't think any of them love it the way we here do. As to self esteem, I think if it relates to music, it is because people will seek out music that fits them. As a teenager, I listed to Cheap Trick constantly........for obvious reasons From there I went to metal, because I hated the world Then came classic rock, because I was starting to think more. Then prog because I became a total genius But seriously, what you like is what you like. I won't criticize anyone here about what they like. (though I may tease them a bit............expecting the same in return, of course )

I suppose I could turn on a "Classic Rock" station and listen to Stairway To Heaven, Freebird or Hotel California for the 499,877th time in my life.

that is an AWESOME explenation of rap. I agree completely. I also agree with people who say the lyrics are crap, which they usually are, even if a rapper has good flow, they usually talk about complete crap. However, I think that music is coming to a paradigm shift. With that i see the rise of prog again, but rap will still be popular but with better lyrics and i think even some sort of 'progressive hip hop'. Don't ask me why i think this, it would take way too long to explain, just take it as an oppinion / guess
