Topic: Turntable HELP Posted: June 15 2009 at 17:21 |
So guys and gals i need some tech help, I've tried some other forums but none were of help, so down to it. I have a Sony PS-X6 TT that has a broken auto return mechanism, I think. it just return the tone arm in the middle of songs as if the side was over it's really starting to get on my nerves and there are no repair shops within a resonable distance. so anybody have any ideas?

The auto-return is normally activated by the stylus moving into the run-out groove at the centre of the album. This works by having a vane connected to the tone-arm mechanism that passes between a lamp and a photo-sensor - on the run-out groove this vane moves quickly resulting in a large change in the amount of light hitting the sensor - this rapid change is detected by the electronics, which then operates a solenoid to lift the arm and return it to the park position using a system of cams. The start/stop button overrides this automatic run-out groove detection.
It sounds like the detector is incorrectly adjusted, so it is lifting too early - Is it lifting in the gaps between tracks, or part way through a track?

Usually between tracks but sometimes part way through, mostly depends on how far through the side it is, rarely happens before a thirds and then in the last third it's guaranteed to happen, i was listening to The Yes Album just now trying to figure out what was going on and it happened between each track and half way through Starship trooper which is the last track on side 1 I tried multiple other albums and it was usually when the last or second last track started or when it hits the last third of the album

Then I would guess that the sensor circuit needs adjustment.
Unfortunately this is not something I can help with from 5000 miles away, so I suggest you find a competent local electronics/hi-fi engineer and get them to do it.
I cannot see a simple way of disabling the auto-return to make it a manual (which would not fix your turntable, but would make it usable).
You can download the service manual from here: http://www.vinylengine.com/library/sony/ps-x6.shtml

Repairing it would probably cost more than it is worth, esp. as most repair shops charge a £30 fee just to have a look at it, i would suggest investing in a new turntable..?
