But when you are used to appreciate some of the weird stuff even the hardest music to get into sounds more accesible to you. Never had any problem with Henry Cow's western Culture, only with the "vocal" tracks from the live album e.g.

The vocal tracks of their live album were not a problem with me; I think they got carried away a bit too far on side three and four of the live album. Nothing against atonal stuff, as long as it returns to tonal from time to time; if it stays atonal all the time, as it does on those two sides (more or less), I get annoyed. It is the mixture which does it.

I've never been able to get into the majority of the Prog Metal genre, and though I've tried I've not gotten very far into neo-prog either.  There are a few exceptions to each, I'm sure, as I like some tracks, but any time I've tried out, say, a Dream Theater or Marillion album (both chosen simply because they're the most often talked about from their respective genre) I find the majority of it uninteresting to me.  As I learned from listening to Zeuhl, RIO, etc., though, I keep trying every 6 months or so to find bands in the genre which I can fully appreciate.  Until then, I'll stick with what I know I like.  Smile

that is true for me with all the metal core/ math rock bands i listen too.  every time i go back to them i enjoy them more.. yet the first impression is usually not that good

I have just listened to all the Fall of Troy albums again this past week and enjoyed them immensely

most progressive metal i hear, however, my first impression usually lasts a while.  DT, i have always liked for example, maybe even less so the more i listen Tongue

Goodness, finally someone else who gets it!.....Genesis, for me. They're great musicians, don't get me wrong....I just don't like their music that much and frankly, I didn't understand why they were included on this site.  I think of them as pop, not prog.

LOL Like 'em or not, they definitely had a considerable prog period (especially during prog's classic years).  You don't consider the majority of the band's output during the 70's Prog?

There's this British band, who's original singer was just too buzzy sounding, and the lyrics, I guess I wasn't British enough to appreciate them.  The music was okay, but never quite complex enough for my tastes.  The drummer was good, but when the singer left, he put down the sticks and tried singing, but he's buzzy sounding too.

I can't remember their name, it was something like "Je Ne Sais".

As for others, I can't get into anything that has those throw up in your throat vocals.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Of the bands I have listened to in the top 100 and/or in the PA popular artists, the following are ones I have never been able to get into:
Pink Floyd (with the exception of Animals)
Camel
Porcupine Tree
Tangerine Dream
All of Tech/Extreme Metal
Eloy
Soft Machine

Tell me. I challenge you to look on any prog site and see if you can find Genesis's exclusion on ANY site. Perhaps you are very young and unfamiliar with the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, which, in that case, you are spot on with your musings, but to suggest that Genesis from 1970-1974 was anything but prog just really reveals that you don't get what progressive rock is in the 1st place.

Now, go on and don't like them for all I care. That is just a matter of taste. One can handle that, but to sugfgest that EVERY prog site is wrong...well...that rubs me a bit wrong.

Genesis. Not prog. What the hell.

In other news, I heard Robert Fripp is producing the new Hannah Montana album and Steve Wilson is working on remastering the Carpenters discography.

I can't think of cases where I took to a band only after making an effort (sometimes one may start with the wrong album, or piece of music....). The appreciation comes quickly for me with ones I really like, it's just that with some the appreciation deepens over time.

Actually, there was one that I felt I misjudged at first, but can't remember what it was -- not a favourite, anyway.  Oh yeah, Radiohead.  Mea culpa, I didn't know enough of the music and had some misconceptions, but I didn't make an effort, I just happened to hear more material that immediately appealed.

EDIT: Sorry for digressing from the topic, but for me I see little point in trying hard to get into bands and certain types of music when there is already such a  huge amount of music that will appeal (fit my tastes).  I still like to explore outside my comfort zone, and may find at some time that music that would not appeal to me at this stage in my musical journey may appeal at a later time (it can take musical steeping stones to get there).  But I'm lazy.... If I'm not intrigued at the least, to start with, by the music, then it's unlikely that forcing myself would make me appreciate more (might even make me hate it more).

Actually many of my very favorite bands demanded some exploring. Some that come to mind right away are Genesis, Hatfield & The North, Tool and Miles Davis' best albums...

This is why I encourage people to give time to the music. It might just work.

I just can't seem to get into ELP's Love Beach.  I tell myself, "stare at the chest hair and you will understand," but it hasn't worked.  LOL

Seriously, I'll have to ponder this question.  I can say off the bat that I still don't get into the 'metal' side of prog.  Just me.

I've tried a few times to get into Dream Theater, but they just don't click with me.  The musicianship is fine, but it doesn't add up to much IMO.

I agree with the comments about second chances and multiple listens. For the last three months I have been reviewing and rating albums to be included in a personal Top 100 that I'm putting together. I am discovering that many of the albums selected so far did not impress me the first time around or even the second time. The mind sometimes will try to trick you, but it comes down to something "clicking or not clicking".

It took multiple listens before these albums "clicked":
Missing Link "Nevergreen"
Beggars Opera "Sagittary
Nova "Vimana"
Alquin "The Mountain Queen"

Multiple listens did not help these albums:
Goblin "Il Fantastico Viaggio..."
Streetmark "Nordland"
System "What We Are"
I like the compositions and musicianship in Fusion Orchestra but just can't seem to tolerate the vocals.
Also, I'm a big fan of jazz / fusion and can listen to Return To Forever all day but can't get through one side of any album by Weather Report (great artwork on the covers though).

BTW...Have I mentioned Eno, even when he gets together with Fripp?
