Well Caravanserai is their most progressive. The other albums are there at least because caravanserai is prog.

the two before it were just as progressive.... whether any of them is 'prog' is up to the individual I guess.   To deny they were progressive ..well...  I guess you could...  it wouldn't say much to most everyone else about your knowledge of music though hahha.  Santana is like others before... and others to come.. they probably stretch the limits of what 'prog' is...  but that is not such a bad thing.  The name of the site is exposure.. not just for new, unknown bands... but bands that might need a second look... a fresh perspective on their music..

Uh...Most of it at this point. ;-) But I really do not like Porcupine Tree much more than many of the others so I'll go with them. And I don't understand the appeal of Magma even though I eat dissonance.

I don't even like Gentle Giant, but this statement makes me sad. :( I thought we were manly prog fans with extreme tastes, can't we handle a tiny bit of esoteric melodies. It's not even like they're avant-garde, they're borrowing half of it from classical music...Which is why I don't get much into them either, as I would rather listen to actual classical music.

I have never really got into King Crimson. I have always loved In the Court of the Crimson King, In the Wake of Poseidon, Lark's Tongue in Aspic and Red, but until yesterday I never really liked much beyond that. Lizard just clicked for me yesterday, I feel prompted to look into some of their later works. I never would have thought that so many people didn't like Gentle Giant though, although I admit that I probably don't know whats going on half of the time in their music. I have always appreciated them for being sounding like one of the best classic rock bands I know of in some of their less complex songs.

As for Porcupine Tree, they belong in the "I like some of their songs" category.  I can't get over the feeling that it is just alt/indie/punk/metal influenced pop. I'm also not much into prog-related or cross over or neo prog. I think part of the reason is that once I crossed from classic rock to prog, I never really have wanted to return to many bands that are considered both, except PF and Rush, which I don't listen to much of.

Hehehe...well, I havenīt got the Ethernal Truth from the Gods, just for that reason I made the question before. It could also be that you are not a very trustworthy person,hahaha...Tongue
Different apreciations, thatīs all. Iīm not agree with the perception that Santana in those years was a Prog Band, but a latin rock and fussion jam band. Everyone can think whatever wants...

I believe that in 70īs, prog was a fashioned style, and many bands used that in some aspects of their music. Santana was one of those bands, in the same way that Blind Faith did in their unique album, with the extensive song "Do What You Like". Many other bands adorned their music with Prog brushstrokes, but that isnīt reason enough for me to call them Prog Bands.

Try to have a second look and a fresh perspective on it...LOLWink

Marillion (they're ok but the rave reviews for them are incomprehensible to me, maybe I don't get their lyrics, not huge on lyrics anyway)
The Tangent (I thought I'd like this one, but it's just kind of boring in all honesty)
Robert Wyatt
Eloy
Kraftwerk
Amon Duul II (not even close to the best Krautrock band)
Pain of Salvation (pretty godawful... no, not just Scarsick)
Fates Warning
The Decemberists (I don't know what to say really, people have been crooning over this band lately... there's nothing special here at all, I'd like to hear someone who likes them try to describe what it is exactly that's good about them, that would be interesting)

What about if, instead of regaling us with your usual snarky, patronising comments, you just recognised that people may have different tastes from yours? If you have decided you don't like The Decemberists, or The Mars Volta, or whatever, we could talk ourselves blue in the face and not convince you that there is something good about those bands - all you want to do is to prove we're idiots who don't understand the first thing about prog.

And, btw, it's not 'crooning', but 'crowing', I suppose... I don't generally make soothing sounds like I would to a baby when I talk about the music I like.
Raff, I didn't mean it to be patronizing... If I wanted to be patronizing, I'd say, "they're just the next hyped up folky indie rumor that uses their pseudo quaint little 19th century vibe as a phony shtick to get a good review from cultural trainwrecks like Pitchfork media" *takes breath* or something of the sort... but I don't really think that. That would be underestimating them, and was a poorly phrased run-on sentence anyway.

I meant what I initially said, "it would be interesting" to have a glimpse into the mind of someone who likes the band, so that I might clearly see the appeal, even if I don't like it... It's just that when something is hyped to death and it turns out not sounding that good to me, my mind tends to react super hard against it, but I like making my view as universal as possible so I'd still like it if someone forced my mind open, if that needs to happen. :P Ah well, I know full well that's too much to ask of anyone, just know I'm not being patronizing, more like lamenting the fact that I'm not an objective deity when it comes to music. I'm over-thinking it as usual, anyway...

Well yeah, that's what a lot of prog does, although it's more like "taking influence from" than "borrowing". Avant-garde prog often does the same with avant-garde classical... but prog has a different appeal than classical, I think we all know that.

Also, ELP is the only one for me. They might be able to make a good song, and their debut is OK, but really they had the musical ability to make really good music and just didn't.

Otherwise, I like Magma, Gentle Giant, Henry Cow, etc. but I really don't care enough to really like them. Whatever.

Threads like these are always a bicker fest, which I don't mind at all, but am amused by some peoples reactions when someone might find others insulting their favorite band. You guys are good at dishing it out, but not good at taking it.. Hey, that makes you qualified at being a Collaborator.LOL

My bands....all you guys who lumped VdGG into their list...I HATE all your bands!!Wink

I admit to enjoying the bickering.  It does make this place more amusing, entertaining, and lively.

What's pretty cool for me is that I have a desire to find common musical ground with people, which is partially a sign of my personal inadequacy methinks, and even though I may not share a huge amount in common with some people regarding likes, I can find quite a bit of musical camaraderie in terms of dislikes with some people whose tastes are not that similar to my own.  That makes me feel closer to the community.

Incidentally, although it's been well-covered already.  I was asked by Snow Dog which Magma album I'd recommend for someone who knows M.D.K. and doesn't much like it.  I agree with Rico that it may be best to start with Kobaia and work ones way up chronologically (incidentally, Kobaia happens to be my favourite though I love most Magma albums -- even Merci has its charms).  For some, though, K.A. would be a better starting point, or Live/Hhai.  I don't listen to the studio version of M.D.K. any more, as I much prefer live versions (I have a particular thing for the Retrospectiw 1-2 version).  It does depend to an extent on what Magma qualities one likes and dislikes for those that don't dig the music that much if one is somewhat familiar with them.  And it depends on the types of music one likes.  I'd recommend the first two to jazz-fusion aficionados.  Before buying albums, though, I'd suggest checking out the streaming mp3s here, checking youtube, and myspace.  I prefer to let my own ears guide me if possible.

Another option might be to get Hamtaï! Hommage ā la musique de Christian Vander (a Magma/ Vander tribute album).  I wrote a lousy review as I get bored very quickly when writing such stuff, but CPicard wrote a good one.  Or maybe get an OFFERING album, or a VANDER, CHRISTIAN one.  He has more than is listed on the PA page, but Les Cygnes.... is a good one.  For some, a good way to get into Magma would be to expose oneself to other Zeuhl bands first, because Magma can prove more challenging than some other ones, but those can lead one to Magma.  ESKATON's début will work for some (listen to the streaming track if you haven't already) -- I happen to love female operatic vocals.  I got rather bored with the album over time, though I used to absolutely love it.  Magma is my fave Zeuhl band, and I still really love Shub-Niggurath and Zao.  I was a Zeuhl completist at one time, but these days in Zeuhl it's mostly about Magma.  There is so much great Zeuhl and Zeuhl-related stuff.  One album that can be put in the Zeuhl universe that had a really big effect on me was Jean-Paul Prat's Masal.  I have a natural inclination towards jazzy progressive rock, though.

EDIT:  And check out Vox Nostra, a heavily Magma-inspired band which has allowed PA to stream all of the tracks from its Anima album: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4493

Incidentally, incidentally, Vander is big on Coltrane, and one might want to get Giant Steps.  With MDK, it might help or hinder if one likes Orff's Carmina Burana ("O Fortuna").  Another way to possibly get some more M.D.K enjoyment is by watching this (again thank to Song of Copper for the find).  Very fun, and Magma should be fun (and in turn sublime for me -- won't tickle everyone's funny bones though):

Also check out: http://www.myspace.com/magmabootlegs for Magma crossover tracks.  They have a fairly new to that page track "King Magma" which is good.  I like the AC/DC Magma one.

After countless hours of TRYING to get into The Flower Kings, I have almost given up. I have listened to the three highest rated albums in their discography, and I have come across 1 song that I really enjoy. Trading My Soul off The Sum Of No Evil. Besides that song, it all seems like fluff to me, I just can't get into it!

The Mars Volta is another one, they don't even seem very prog at all to me. (I will be bashed for saying that)

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I think I "get" Magma, I just can't stomach the repetition. You should never play the same thing the same way twice.

I agree, but I wasn't attacking GG. I was making the point that it really should not be difficult for a prog fan to understand--if he is a manly man. ;-)

Some people consider this band prog...or at least experimental. Either way I cannot get into them: Tool. There's just something about Tool that I don't like. Maybe it's the vocalist. I have to admit, the members are very talented (especially their drummer) but I can't get into a lot of their music. I have to admit, I love Schism and Vicarious, but not much else. I bought Aenima and Lateralus and listened to both all the way through but I simply can not get into them.

One other prog band I cannot get into is Porcupine Tree. It's the same situation with Tool: there's just something about them I can't really explain. I simply can not get into them.

Would you like some Bailey's?
