What is progressive?
|
To him apparently, not the Decemberists. Get over it. Prog is a mindset toward music, one that explores the possibilities and doesn't factor anything out musically... and to a degree, a sound... that's the best I can describe it in simple terms... it's obviously hard to define, hence threads like this.
So that said, I think the Decemberists have some songs that have progressive tendencies but aren't totally prog, I don't care about them being added here though, prog isn't sacred to me. Does anyone else think that they should be in crossover though, since the majority of their songs don't really have much prog to them? Just wondering, since to me it seems like mostly they're an indie folk band with some songs that have influence from Tull and even Floyd etc like The Island that everyone mentions. Not a big deal either way though... as has become clear through all the "who cares if they're prog or not" posts. ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Dude, what the hell? What's with the sudden animosity? I put down honest opinions and thoughts in this thread.
Listen, there are bands I like a lot, and at one point I started equating what I liked with being progressive. I have learned this isn't the case, I thought maybe it was happening with The Decemberists. Some people pn here like them, and as such thought they were prog. After this thread, I realize this hypothesis was not only hasty, but wrong, as I am the one being fooled, in that it is my personal tastes and limitations preventing me from hearing the progressive qualities of thier music.
That will be my last defense of my opinions and thoughts concerning this thread.
As for what I listen to, here is a list (containing some bands I have listened to in quite a while, and many bands I mos tlikely forgot to list.) Taken from my Facebook page, lol.
Tool, Dream Theater, Kansas, Lamb of God, Mudvayne, Into Eternity, Canvas Solaris, Gordian Knot, Porcupine Tree, Coheed and Cambria, Pain of Salvation, The Flower Kings, Dimmu Borgir, Fleet Foxes, They Might Be Giants, Ekotren, Spock's Beard, Rage Against the Machine, Between the Buried and Me, Th3ee, Happy the Man, Pantera, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Opeth, Primus, The Mars Volta, Gentle Giant, System of a Down, Planet X, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Pat Methany, Zappa, Evergrey, Spiral Architect, Rush, The Beatles, Jon Lennon, Metallica, A Perfect Cricle, Matisyahu, Wilco, Beatles, Led Zepplin, Sixteen Horsepower, Devin Townsend, Arsonists Get All The Girls, Divine Heresy, In Flames, August Burns Red.

Well, if you had paid attention to things here on the forums, you should know that I am a woman, not a 'dude' ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) . As to my 'animosity', perhaps you should read the title of your thread again... Personally, anything that questions my integrity (as a listener, in this case), or implies that I am easily manipulated and can't form my own opinions, gets my goat up big time. After having listened to prog for almost 40 years, I can hear very clearly that The Decemberists don't sound like Yes and Genesis - however, neither do most of the bands you listed above. And, I am sorry to say, I still don't understand the connection between people liking them and their being prog. I suppose this is a limitation of mine too.

If you payed attention to things here on the forum, which I suspect you do being a collaborator and having nearly 16,000 posts, you would know I am not here often. So, no, I was not aware you are female. Frankly, at this point I could care less about your precious integrity, as I have explained myself more than enough. I never claimed all, or even the majority, of the bands I listed were prog.

That is true, but dude is not necessarily gender specific when it is used as a figure of speech for exasperation.

That is, of course, WalterDigsTunes speak for 'If it was made after 1979 it's crap'. He wouldn't know. Just give it up, Walter. He asked a question you can't answer, as you're not a fan of the band. Rogerthat, you might try either of their two most recent albums.

In Macedonia very very few people listen Prog, and particulary in my town Kocani nobody listens Prog, and that is frustrating, with noone to share love for Prog

You know, on the web people like that are often called trolls, and kicked out.... Here, we choose the 'softer' option, and cover them in ridicule ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif) . In my book, using terms like 'fooled' is highly offensive, and people who choose to use them deserve anything coming to them. As to Rael, well.. Sorry you don't care about my 'precious' integrity. I, on the other hand, couldn't care less that you're not around often, and, seen your attitude, I would recommend you stop visiting altogether. Wise people don't want to be associated with a band of fools as we seem to be. And yes, there are reasons why I was made a SC.... One of them was that I did never, ever start a thread like this.

Dude, that's soo 1980's; today we live in a politically correct society...egalitarian. All that gender-specific crap is thrown out, the feminists want chicks to also be called "dudes."
What's the topic...oh The Decemberists...cool band, one of my favorite new PROG bands. ![Thumbs Up Thumbs Up](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif)
