Oh, and thanks for the hints about Magma I have just been watching bits and pieces on Utoob and not having any in my collection (Steve Davis put me off) I was interested in where to start.

One thing that surprised me about this topic was the mention of several "mainstream" bands that are constantly referred to in this forum (Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, ELP).
My first impression of this site was that posting a negative opinion of these bands would lead to a barrage of reprimands. After all, these bands pretty much dominate the first twenty slots on the top 100 list.
The main point here is that "not being able to get into" is not the same as saying the band is bad.

Gentle Giant I can't get into, and ELP is the same too.
Some of ELP's stuff is pretty good. I'm getting into Karn Evil 9, but the rest of the album is pretty bad in my mind. None of their albums are solid in my mind. There's some really good stuff on all of them, but there's also stuff I skip all the time. As far as Gentle Giant, I'm just not crazy about their sound. Maybe I need to pull out Octopus again and see if it will grow on me yet... |

I'm a discography-walkthrough guy, and I can personally say it worked (becoming a fan, that is). Kobaia is the best way to begin with Magma, due to the fact that it's richly jazz-avant-esque, with the well-known Zeuhl chemistry yet to appear. So, M.D.K. is probably recommended as a starting point for Zeuhl Magma. Cause I wouldn't grab 1001 first, it was a confusing experience. Furthermore, I think that once a person has accepted MDK (thus, the Magma core style), into his system, he can perfectly explore the band as chronologically as possible. The trilogy, in complete sequence, then perhaps the 75 live concert, after which it all becomes subjective (especially with Udu Wudu and Attakh - but we're past introductions by now): further concerts like the Retrospektiws only highlight the already mentioned classics. There is a lot of popular bands that while I don't find particularly "bad", I just can't get into whatsoever. Most evident is ANYTHING "neo."

I see your point, and agree with it. However, what makes people react badly is not posts saying, "I don't like band X" (which is perfectly legitimate), but rather derogatory, patronising comments such as, "You have to explain to me what is so special about X". This is what really gets my goat up.. Why should I have to explain why I like something? Have some people never heard of personal taste? |

"Personal taste" really says it all. That's the main reason we bought albums by certain bands and not others. We should not have to defend or explain our reasons or choices.
If I'm going to compare Beggars Opera to Gentle Giant I'm going to do so by building up Beggars Opera rather than tearing down Gentle Giant.
Unfortunately, some others on this site choose the latter.

I can't get into anything. I can only listen to silence-core. Otherwise known as progressive nothingness.
Such great bands as Hey, We Ain't Playin' Nothin'., or The Fantastic Literal Birds And Bees Band. Good times, good times. Kind of hard to get into, though. I had to start with HWAPN's "Silence in d minor" before it all really clicked for me. |

Opeth. I don't like the transitions from calm to heavy.Mikael has an amazing voice both gruff and clean.I did like Morningrise back in the day though but they lost me after that.

I really don't have much affinity for most Symphonic prog (save for Yes, which is among my favorites). Stuff like Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull as well; don't mind those bands, but I have few albums from each and pretty much never listen to them.

Can - just a lot of noise to my ears. Good grooves, though. The Mars Volta - also just a lot of noise. Actually, most of Prog Metal and all of Tech/Extreme Metal. If I want a sledge hammer applied to my cranium I'll go out to a construction site and stick my head in the pile driver. At the same time, I do appreciate some of the musicianship in those categories - it's just too hard for me to hear it through all the distortion, crunching, screaming, and growling.

I somewhat agree with that statement , I tried and I tried but I can't find what makes them so highly revered around here.
About the Rush issue , I think that they are a great band but Neil Peart's position as the ultimate drummer is exagerated. The guy created that image out of himself and that may convince a few people , specially rock audiences. But he can touch a proper jazz fusion drummer , that's for sure.
