lulz @ alex & david
How the hell can you can say The Beatles are just pop and talentless?
That's seriously wrong in every way.
Listen to George Harrison's guitar playing. Also listen to his compositional skills.
Some of Paul McCartney's lyrics are great as were John Lennon's.
Now I would agree Ringo Starr isn't that amazing but he was still an integral part of the band. They even let him sing on Yellow Submarine.

Understandable. Not really surprising either, I don't think you'd like any of their stuff. I don't really listen to that one too often.

Saying they're talentless is just completely wrong though.
The pop argument is an opinion.
Whether they're talented isn't.
I think you need to hear Sergeant Pepper or The White Album.

My opinion. CoAM could learn a thing or two or ten from The Beatles.

Both points are just as much an opinion as anything else subjective. You can't objectify art. I've heard them, and it baffles me why people could like it, but that's just me. I hate them more than VDGG.

The Decemberists gig was awesome ! They're one of those bands who come across as genuinely enjoying what they're doing, and not going through the motions. And the live setting is ideal to bring out the strengths of The Hazards of Love... You could do much worse than check them out, if you get the chance to catch them in your area.
|
So what was the set list? What about that "cover song" somebody else mentioned? I won't get to see them, so spill the beans!
|
Wow, four new pages in one hour ! Hopefully you'll manage to see my response... Well, it seems that the set list (with the exception of The Hazards of Love played in its entirety) was different for every date. After THoL, they played a track from one of Colin Meloy's solo albums. "Red Right Ankle", "The Bachelor and the Bride", "A Cautionary Tale" (with a very amusing sketch in the middle), "O Valencia!", "The Engine Driver", and a surprise cover song - Heart's "Crazy on You", with stunning vocal performances from both Shara Worden and Becky Stark. Then they left the stage, and came back for a final song - a rousing rendition of "Sons and Daughters". BTW; the cover Bob was referring to was "Echoes".

Agreed. I don't own a Beatles album and probably never will but I don't dislike them that much. Even their early pop music is cleverly written. Do you like Traffic's Paper Sun, Alex?

I dislike the Beatles too, Henry. True, not as avidly as Alex...I demand a mention in the thread title.
