One of the greatest bassists ever is gone.Cry ...... Got to whip out my Isotope-Illusion album where he shines .
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Canterbury & the world of bass guitar in general have lost a fine exponent.

Another true great gone.

R.I.P. Hugh

I hope that the place where you are now has two rainbows daily.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

So sad, especially when those who gathered for the benefit concerts last December heard talk that he was on the mend. A musician who produced one of Canterbury's dominant memories, that fuzz bass - and not forgetting he composed some excellent tunes. Remarkably helpful and tolerant. I once rang Hugh  from the radio studio and asked if he would do a telephone interview, there and then. He beg a hour to finish dinner and sure enough he then did a briliant 10 minute interview. A gentleman and major player.

A truly great loss. We should be grateful for all the splendid music he left us. I'll play Soft Machine's VOLUME TWO (my favourite!) and ROCK BOTTOM in tribute tonight.

I remember the first time I heard Soft Machine Vol. 2, Hopper's bass really leapt out at me - it was an amazing and unforgettable sound. RIP.

One more for St. Peter's house band Cry. The way he has been recruiting great musicians during the last few years must mean he has plans of building a super super group. Very sad news; R.I.P., Hugh.

Maybe it was a sign but I saw two Rainbows yesterday whilst on the way back from Wales.  This was before I heard the sad news. Cry

Last night after hearing the news i put on "Two Rainbows Daily" one of my absolute favs with Hugh and the late Alan Gowen.Anyway i'm reading the liner notes and at the end of it Hugh talks about the bonus tracks coming from a one-off concert he and Alan did a few months after they recorded this album, and how he asked Nigel Morris to play percussion on that rainy,Sunday night(he hadn't played with Nigel since they had played together with ISOTOPE). The last sentence in the liner notes reads like this: : "This was the last time Alan and i worked together. Two weeks later after the Bracknell gig,Celia(Alan's wife) called with the shocking news that Alan was in the hopital with leukemia. He died less than a year later". An eerie coincedence to say the least. I treasure the picture of Alan and Hugh(from 1978) standing in this field on a sunny day. That's also in the liner of "Two Rainbows Daily".

I think I shall put on Soft Machine - Grides later.

It's a DVD as well, so I'll get to watch him and Elton Dean play, as well as hear them.

Here's a clip:
