He guys, we often talk about the TFK related bands and solo artists but then we always forget about Kaipa. It's Rione's first band and was around them already in the seventies ! I just heard a song by Kaipa on Morow and it didn't sound bad at all. Though their album Mindrevolutions was not impressive to me. Especailly the vocals are below par. Anybody who knows Kaipa really well and did they ever make a masterpiece ?

Hey PR, Personally, I only have Mindrevolutions myself, though I do enjoy it. The vocals don't bother me too much though in all fairness, I do need to give it a few more listens.
Roj, I'm curious as to what you think of Flower Power, let us know once you listen to it. |

Me too Roger. And especially how you digest the one hour epic ! I'm curious if you will like it as much as Monster & Men. I love them both almost equally though they are very different. GoD is one you will have to give at least 10-20 spins before really getting into it. So, don't judge too soon.

Hi Tom. Unfortunately I'm not going to get a chance to listen to Flower Power for a few days. I want to put aside a good couple of hours on my own to really listen properly and I'm afraid that's not going to happen this week.
I could listen to the odd song here or there, but that won't really do for Garden Of Dreams . I want to really do it justice. Instead I've been making do with bits and bobs of Adam & Eve, Milliontown and Frequency this week. And I actually reviewed Frequency finally. Next for reviewing is Space Revolver, hopefully tomorrow or the day after....or next month knowing me. How do those bloody prog reviewers find the time. Henk? How?
I don't know any Kaipa at all, but if Roine's involved, believe me I'm interested!!

Mindrevolution doesn't strike me as prog. I may get some flack for this but the vocals made me think of Disney songs or something along those lines. It took me a while but I think I've finally levelled off at liking 80--90% of the album. I've also got Angling Feelings and their 70s stuff but those are pretty new and I haven't really listened to them.
I haven't listened to TFK as long or as often as I used to recently. I imagine once the weather gets better around here and it actually feels like summer, they'll come back to the front. |

I haven't heard any Kapia, yet either, though not really willing to due to reviews, however I might one day check their best rated album...
BTW Roger, very nice review! Edited by The Quiet One - June 03 2009 at 15:31 |

Regarding Kaipa, I've got a few albums but the one I would recommend to ALL of you here is "Keyholder". It is a truly stunning piece of work and one of my top 10 albums from the last 15 years or so. Seriously - all TFK fans will love Keyholder!! |

Actually that's the sort of answer I was looking for. Thanks. mate ! The only other thing I knew of Kaipa besides Mindrevolutions is the stream song Se var Morgon gry which is a nice almost funny song if you link it to Roine but probably he wasn't yet around that band at that point (just checked it: he WAS !).
Guys, check out this stream song on PA. You won't believe this. Roine was already on guitar back in '75 !
But I will certainly check out Keyholder one day. I'd be a fool if I didn't if I can believe the above comment !

This is more or less what I was trying to say when I accused the vocals. Instrumentally the album is not that bad and the epic has terrific moments but the vocals just ruin it completely. The girl has a voice you can find anywhere on the streets so to speak (she looks ok by the way but that's irrelevant here )

Eh ... well ...just a bit in between and so.
I remember I did my first 100 reviews in 2007 between 7.15 and 8.30 each morning (usually three or four a day) at my work because at that time I had a slow computer and then posting a review is not really a good idea. If I look back now at those reviews they are short and quite poor really with the exception of a few. Not that they are so great right now but slightly improved I would say.
Anyway after these first 100 in 3 months the admin team was apparently so impressed with the quantity they wanted to promote me. I tried to prevent them from making a mistake but they insisted . No, this is a joke. But after this I got into a bit of a dip and didn't write any more reviews from march 2008 until august. After that I got back in a sort of rhythm until now with appr. 3 each week. But there can be weeks without reviews when I'm having a small dip again. In those cases I'm simply not motivated to write reviews.
Besides this all I feel some people (don't know about you guys on this thread) are making to big a deal out of doing a review. I mean, ok, you have to give it your best shot but sometimes I get the feeling some people think it's the end of the world if their review isn't good enough. Well, I can tell, most of my reviews aren't good enough if you compare them to professional reviews. But that's not what we are doing on this site. We're just a bunch of amateurs who are doing the best we can. And that's all there is to it.
Just do your review in a relaxed way without pressure and you will just have fun as it should.
Just my thoughts about it.
Ok in the same time I did this post I could have done a review as well. Thanks Roger !!

Just checked the line up on Keyholder and it appears it's the same line up as on Mindrev. Nov, are you sure this is a great album ? Are you not bugged by their vocals like The Captain and me ?
Maybe I should go for one of their seventies albums ?

I should do more reviews, I look at a review as an opportunity to write, a way to practice my 'art' so to speak. Most of the time, when I sit down and the juices are flowing enough, rather than write a review, I focus the energy on the Sci-Fi novel that I work on in my spare time.
It takes a concerted effort for me to write a review, and sadly, I'm usually not focused enough or focused on something else. |

Ok, that's very interesting. And in a way it proves my point that writing a review is considered a serious effort by many. Nothing wrong with it and maybe it's me who is thinking too lightly about it. But if I would put more pressure upon myself I wouldn't write any reviews anymore probably.
By the way, the reviews most of you guys do every once in a while are good enough aren't they ?
What do you think of your own reviews ?
Good luck with the novel, Roland !

Hang on, let me just check........
Yeah, someone a few posts ago said:
"Regarding Kaipa, I've got a few albums but the one I would recommend to ALL of you here is "Keyholder".

I normally am bugged by over-histrionic vocals. For example, I can't listen "I Am" by Tomas Bodin because of the vocals.
This has never been a problem for me with "Keyholder" maybe because the music is so extraordinarily good. There's lots of playing on the album with amazing instrumental sections and the vocals fit the dramatic music for me.
I have got the 2 albums either side of Keyholder but never listen to them
That's up to you. It's like 2 different bands.
I've got a couple of the 70s albums and they are exactly what you'd imagine :- not-quite-as-good-as-Genesis-or-Camel-mid-70s-prog.
Tell you what, pm me your address and I'll send you a copy of Keyholder.

Well, I got my backside into gear and posted a review of Space Revolver this morning. Now let's think. I wonder how many stars I gave it...... ..... Edited by Roj M30 - June 05 2009 at 03:13 |

I just read it Roj. It's great !! I read mine afterwards and I have to say: this is one of those short foolish reviews of mine from 2007. Yours is much better. But hey, it's your avatar, isn't it. Emotionally the review reminds me of my effort on Who's the Boss. It's simply what happens if an album has a tremendous impact on you. You can't help writing with your heart.
And it's sad that fools like Sean Trane and Zowieziggy (and Trotz) had to give their poor opinions about this album otherwise it would have had an average way above 4.00 like some TFK album should have by now. I mean, isn't it a shame that none of their studio albums is above this magical number ? I hate it !!

I know what you mean here. I have this album but funny enough I have less trouble with these vocals compared to Kaipa's. Aleena's vocals and one of the guys' (Lundin or Lundstrom) are that annoying to me that I can't appreciate the instrumental parts anymore. Probably it works totally different on you, well these things are always very personal.
I don't want to sound ungrateful because I really appreciate your offer but thanks. Maybe if I run into it one day when it's for sale over here I will give the album a try but for the moment I pass. Thanks, mate.

Well guys, I've finally got round to listening to Garden Of Dreams. So it seems to be more a collection of songs , some joined some not, rather than an epic as such. Of course it's virtually impossible to judge on one listen, but like all TFK it made a very good impression. I love the classic early TFK feel it has. Plus it's very easy to hear that Tomas has a strong influence on this. I get the feeling it will take a little time but it will end up as one of my top-rated TFK pieces. I'll try and listen to the rest of the album tonight.
I've now heard Adam & Eve 3 times fully, and what a pleasant surprise that is . I wasn't expecting a lot as most people really don't rate it but I absolutely love it and I've found it one of the most immediate albums by TFK. I've been humming the main theme to Drivers Seat all weekend. Those two epics are absolutely fantastic. Edited by Roj M30 - June 09 2009 at 02:59 |
