"For many years Townshend refused to confirm or deny rumours that he was bisexual. In a 2002 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, however, he explained that, although he engaged in some brief same-sex experimentation in the 1960s, he is heterosexual. Townshend currently lives with his long-time partner"

Another one that came to mind is Dee Palmer formerly known as David Palmer. Jethro Tull Keybaordist during the 70's. however David is actually a transwoman not gay.. I am not sure if that counts.

wowh.. I laughed at first, but actually this is an interesting discussion here. Respect for the opener of this forum. I took some time... but I can't think of anyone (not already mentioned) I know to be guy. I have some suspicion though, but telling about that could be unethical.

One of the most succesful "gay statements" in 1980s popular music was Frankie Goes to Hollywood's (awful, to my ears) WELCOME TO THE PLEASURE DOME. This was virtually a sonic creation of producer Trevor Horn (formerly a member of Yes), who hired Steve Howe to play some lead guitar on it.

I think some people need to listen to "South of the Border" by Beardfish.

I am thinking about opening up a thread about cheese-lovers and progsters. How many of the prog rock musicians also love cheese ? We need to find out !!! I leave it like that........

For me I found the appeal of progressive rock in that it was a refuge from some of the more flamboyantly macho rock bands on the FM dial. You must not like much prog metal then. WinkLOL

I kind of see your point about the femininity though, especially with the more whimsical and romantic symphonic prog (especially Italian prog... nothing more romantic and emotional then that, imho). I like music that worries more about intellectuality than anything else. I'm not quite sure why but prog seems overall a very male dominated community, though... I can't think of a single female I personally know who would claim that their favorite music is prog rock. But my mom certainly likes most of the seventies stuff, especially Yes and Rush, even some prog metal like Symphony X, Royal Hunt, and DT, but she's the only female I know who listens to any prog at all.

Basically I'm not so sure if prog really has any gender applications, really.

To answer your original question, though, I can't think of any artists off hand who have proclaimed to be of the more unconventional sexuality... I think it's not usually something musicians overall worry much about, really. We care about how good you play and sound, period. The jazz movements in America certainly helped spur this mentality, for most black and white musicians really didn't care about any of that stuff... music, in a sense, is the universal equalizer! Please anyone feel free to correct me if I'm off on a point.

Nice to meet you... Here's one!Smile And I'm happily married (to another member, as most people know)....

Anyway, I apologise for correcting you, but one of the defining personalities of heavy metal came out quite a few years ago (even if before that everyone had guessed he was gay): Rob Halford of Judas Priest. True, it took him years to do so, but he eventually did it, and set an example.

As to your remark on Italian prog... Well, I can agree about the 'romantic' (though not meant as sentimental - rather in the sense of the literary and artistic movement), but not about the whimsical. Listen to the likes of Jumbo, Area or Franco Battiato, and you'll see a very different side of it.

Interesting topic if I had to sum it up I would have to say that being Gay and a musician became popular with the New wave bands more so in the 80's, at the time prog was really big being gay and coming out with it may have been a risky thing to admit to, remember attitudes have changed lots since the early 70's on such topics .. I would suspect that their were plenty of closet gays in prog bands at the time. The resurgence of prog in the 90's that became popular once again was largely a different type of prog we know as prog metal, now I may be wrong but metal and gay isnt really talked about in the same sentance too often either  LOL so the situation is this ... I read somewhere that 10% of the male population is gay this includes prog bands metal bands any type of music any type of area concerned, but for some reason prog has decided in the interests of its own spirit to keep a lid on the topic even though we know they are out there gays in the prog world !   hope this helped Thumbs Up

Interesting to read about his decision to come out, considering his band was very popular in Christian Rock circles in their heyday.

An ironic twist!

I tend to think of Dream Theater as the masters of Prog cheese. They are so cliche it drives me nuts at times. And James LaBrie should be gay.  Notice his name references cheese as well.

Yes, I included trans people in my original post. I remember reading about Dee Palmer a couple years ago and totally forgot about her.

Trevor Horn was responsible for that musical atrocity?!?!

I am only interested in musicians who are out, not figuring out or outing closeted musicians.

As a gay man (first time I've mentioned this on here), I couldn't agree more.

There are far more gays/bisexuals in prog than those you have mentioned; I know because I was active in both the prog and gay scene in London in the 70s/80s. But I'll be damned if I'm going to "out" anyone.  A person's sexuality is his/her business. It doesn't affect their music, so please don't pry.

Hi there, everyone! I'm new here to the Prog Archives and the forum. I tried a search for this topic but did not find this discussed...

I am curious to know if progressive rock has any openly gay musicians (gay, lesbian, transgendered...) among the roster of artists that are covered on this Prog Archives. I follow many styles of music and know of musicians who are out-of-the-closet  in pop, jazz, electronic, country, etc. With progressive rock being so wildly imaginative I would think it would attract people from many walks of life, and hellllOOO... not to mention some of the outfits worn by prog bands in the 70's!

Kit Watkins, formerly of HAPPY THE MAN and nowadays a very respected chamber, new-age and soft fusion musician and composer, is gay. And by teh way, one of the finest prog rock writers in the genre ever.

I didn't know about Lindsay Cooper, great - that only makes her more attractive to my eyes (when loking at her young photos, I mean...)

      Kind regards.

YES,  I couldn't agree more.

The sexuality is the affair of each individual person, and it's not my duty to discuss about the private life of someone who I don't really know.  Gay musicians are musicians just like hetero musicians, and if they love women or men or both  is nothing that I should care and nothing I do care about - unless the musician doesn't make his 'direction'  become part of the music:  in this case, it would be worth regarding in connection with the music;  but the privacy of a person I don't know personally  is nothing too interesting to me - in my opinion. Wink
