Wow... Not only was i so proud of Isis and Pelican tonight for playing with so much spirit even considering the crazy small venue, (and attendance) they played their creations with not just more vigor but surprisingly even more grace than on each of their latest releases.
I was actually a bit worried about seeing Isis live after some youtube video's when the band happened to get out of sync, but they played with such passion and improv. elaboration that if i could trade the studio recordings for what i heard tonight, i would immediately. Also, holy crap! Aaron Harris has gotten better and was amazing tonight; i witnessed some of the best live drumming i've ever heard. He was certainly channeling Danny Carey in regard to tasteful improv. and phenomenal live stamina. Anyways, i'm obviously too enthused to express myself properly right now :D I'll post a set list after i give my mind some time to settle. ...Pelican played not a single work of theirs that i especially like, but my fervent admiration for them made me enjoy them anyways. What pianoman said is pretty accurate. They are similar to Sigur, and as of late have had more orchestration and what not. Their early stuff was more stripped down and electronic-based. It's very mellow and soothing, despite having some glitchy beats and what not. Tripper is definitely worth a go. With their Under Giant Trees EP we see them making the transition into that orchestrated sound. It's a great EP. The follow-up full-length Parades is pretty true to its name with the orchestration and choir. They still keep the relaxing feel of their past works but somehow manage to make it somewhat bombastic. Good stuff.

Well guys its been quite a while since I posted here... (I think)... by the way new motW is amazing... didn't think I would like it since I don't like Kayo Dot... anyhow I just discovered this band called Tangled Thoughts of Leaving.  A little off topic, but has anyone listened to Sunn O))'s newest? Monoliths and dimensions is significantly more experimental than anything else I've heard them make. How about you KW, you're into stuff like that right?

Pelican set list: Ephermal Australasia Embedding the Moss (which i'm starting to dig a whole lot) Some composition from their first release that i'm not familiar with Geometry of Murder Isis set list: 20 minutes/40 years Hall Of The Dead The Beginning and the End Threshold of Transformation Dulcinea (....precise and surreal) Ghost Key (keys sounded even more amazing than on the album; didn't sound like they belonged on some pop anthem) Hand Of The Host In Fiction After Aaron Turner leaves us with his gratitude i'm walking out as people are chanting the obligatory "One more song!"; out of the corner of my eye i see Mike Gallagher and Aaron Turner run back on the stage and they proceed to play Way Through Woven Branches... Pelican played a song from their first EP? Ugh, LUCKY! I got to hear far from fields though, so I'm not complaining. What did you think when they played in Fiction? That was my favorite song ong of the night.
Yeah Harry, Sunn O))) truly is one of the more consistant groups out there.

 We seem to be coming form different tastes when it comes to Pelican. I was hoping to hear something off TFIOTWBTT; i'm not a fan of their first EP; unfortunately, almost everything they played sounded like some sludge riffing over scattered distortion. (one of the guitar players even made use of a violin bow during a song, which looked cool, but i just sounded like distortion unfortunately) I've only heard their first EP once and i barely was able to keep myself interested that time, so i'm not really sure which song it was. Oh yeah, In Fiction was amazing; they played it at a bit faster tempo than they did on the album and it seemed like some of their guitars had a different tuning; (in a good way) also, Aaron Harris utilized more notes in his playing overall making the whole thing alot more dramatic. |
