I think that is all fairly clear. When we die, we do not go to heaven.
So what happens?
Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 15:53 that the mortal must put on the immortal (in other words, we are not inherently immortal- people who share in the gift and sacrifice of Christ enjoy eternal life in him).
Daniel prophesied:
"Many of them that SLEEP in the dust of the earth, shall awake, some to
everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." (Daniel 12:2)
In other words, all who die "sleep." At the appointed time, God will raise the dead to be judged. Those who are His will be given a new, glorified body (I cannot fathom what this means- we are not told), and those who refused to accept Christ as lord and savior will be shamed and destroyed. Note that the worst "punishment" in the ancient world was not physical pain (like it is for us in the West), but shame. Being put to shame was an eternal punishment because your name would only exist in infamy.
Christ will establish a new kingdom, and those who are His will inhabit it. We know little about this place, but we know there will be no death, no sorrow, no sin, and no night. The book of Revelation (see chapters 21 and 22) provides some details about the physical structure of the city.
Phew. Hope this helps.

So basically... I'm f**ked? And yey to infamy! I much prefer that to being chosen. It's better to be infamous than famous. So where did that silly notion of heaven and hell come from in the first place then? Pearly gates, stairs, clouds, angels, cherub, harps and all that? It must have come from somewhere.

| It came from a Westernization of Ancient Near Eastern concepts (mainly).
People in the West typically value happiness over honor, hence "heaven" becomes a place where you are happy for eternity. Hell becomes a way to "scare" people into Christianity (because it's painful and goes on forever).
While happiness will be a part of it eternal life, the ancient Christians would have understood their ultimate reward as sharing in God's honor.
Jesus never once told anyone he came to make them happy.

Is it wrong to consider drinking coffee straight from the cafetiere.
Because I almost just did that.

I wouldn't say so.
The amount of times I've eaten my dinner off the tray, instead of getting a plate out...
Also, whenever I have cereal, I always slurp up the milk at the end. I don't like wastage!

I now know the Latin word for full of wind (ventosus... somewhat predictable). Consequently, I have the power, if not the understanding, to do Shed-style jokes.

I wish I knew Latin. One day I may attempt to learn some.
One of my favourite quotes is in Latin though.
Timor mortis conturbat me.
