To my British friends:

Who exactly is the Queen Mother?
And is true that she can play the bongos expertly?

She was the mother of our current queen, but died aged over 100 a few years ago.

Apparently she was an expert on bongos and harmonica, although it's difficult to picture her doing either. She was also fond of a gin and tonic and liked a bet on the horses.

Ah yes, the 'Phil the Greek' approach to diplomacy. Makes you proud to be British Confused.

Guess what I've been up to today?  Any Harry Potter fans around?

Count yourself lucky - this is what Mid-Hants get up to...

...and I have to admit it's a little surreal seeing that pass over the bridge near where I live.

Oh gosh. Cry

I used to go to The Watercress Line a lot when I was younger.  What on earth has happened?

Thomas was around the last time I went (it's a J94 Saddle Tank, I think).  James the Red Engine is probably the N or the U Class (they have two Us and one N)

I'm not sure what Percy is though...

Grrr!

I do hope they're still running Bodmin and Swanage.  Bulleid Pacifics have always been my favourite.  They also had British India Line (a Merchant Navy Class) but I don't know if they ever restored it.

Any ideas, Dean?.

^ I know nothing of engines and trains, I just happen to live a few hundred yards from Medstead Station.

Oh I see.

I've been to Medstead and Four Marks quite a few times.  I've got some old photographs from The Mid Hants from when I was about 12 or something.  Most are terrible.

It's quite fun travelling from Alresford to Alton though.

Yes, Patrick, Michael Martin did resign today.

Even though I'm a Labour supporter (of sorts, not this New Labour nonsense so much), I do feel he made the right choice.  He's made one too many mistakes.  You never heard Bettie Boothroyd making controversial decisions.

Of course, he's not solely responsible for the Allowance problem and it won't solve it but he hasn't helped.  I think new blood will help though.

I am sure he's a good MP and so I hope he doesn't stand down as one.  It's just as a speaker, I felt he was inept.

Thomas is quite obviously not a saddle tank (does its tank look like a saddle?).  He's an 0-6-0 side tank loco, normally an LMS Jinty or similar is used to play Thomas.  A J94 could be used but the tanks would need to be rebuilt to look anything like Thomas.  Now Percy, he is a saddle tank loco.

Don't knock Thomas and similar events; they help pay for preserved railways to carry on doing what they do.Wink

I am fairly sure it's a J94.  The only other 0-6-0 they have is a Terrier (and an 03 Diesel) and it looks too big to be one of them.  I know the J94 is a Saddle Tank, I have a 00 Gauge model of one.  My father used to get the Watercress Line Magazine when he was a member and I'm sure it was a J94.

I just looked and it's actually an Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0 Saddle Tank (basically a J94) that was converted to Side-tank status in 1994.

They also have another J94 converted into a Tender engine... what on earth?  That's now known as Douglas and is also used for Thomas events.

Very bizarre.

There were lots of J94 class 0-6-0 tank locos built around the war years by many different manufactureres but to a similar design.  They were known as "Austerity Tank Engines".  Not heard of one with a tender before 'though.
