Personally, I would recommend that if at all possible you get a bicycle and try to use it instead of your car whenever appropriate. It's not an option for some people, but in my case this gives me about 4 hours of exercise each week without having to sacrifice any other activities. On top of that I'm using a stepper ... while listening to prog or watching prog live dvds. Running is a bit more effective (burns more calories) but can also damage your joints. |

Have you tried elliptical machines? While they're not as effective as running, they do provide a bit more motion than a stepper. I found them to be quite useful during my weight loss endeavors. I love how you never have to remove your feel from the machine; that prevents a bit of the damaging impact that I have come to associate with running. Speaking of running, I usually set my my mp3 player on random when I'm at the gym. Once, I listened to all of King Crimson's "Sailor's Tale." Boy, that was a weird experience... minutes of soothing ambiance followed by zonked out drumming and jagged guitar work... odd but fun. |

^ sorry, in fact I have an elliptical machine:
http://www.daum-electronic.de/en/modelle/cp-lycardio-t.html I agree that they're much better than simple steppers. If you use the arms properly and set a high wattage, they're every bit as effective as running IMO ... without all the health hazard. Usually I settle for a low wattage though, as my only intention is to burn some calories (usually about 100 watts for 20-30 minutes). |

positive. I never top 1500 for a day ...like I said, I'm vegan. It's hard to get more calories than that without meat or dairy.

If I may chime in with some advice, this is what I found works very well to keep me healthy and at a reasonable weight:
1) drink water - lots of it! Sodas don't quench your thirst, and have loads of empty calories. At least beer and wine are natural products; 2) don't ever think about eliminating carbs - they are the main source of fuel your body needs. However, think about replacing part of your carb intake with whole grains and such. High-protein diets can put a lot of stress on your liver and kidneys; 3) use fat and sugar sparingly when you cook. I always cut down the amount of both fat and sugar in the recipes I make, and no one has ever complained. And learn to use plenty of herbs and spices! 4) WALK! That's the best esercise you can get - it's free, you can do it just about everywhere and in every situation. You'll wonder at what a regular 30-minute walk a day will do to your metabolism. |

^ thanks ... I agree with all 4 tips! Usually I don't drink pure water, but no sodas either (apart from the zero cal versions). I walk and cycle every day.

Believe it or not, diet sodas are actually worse for the casual soda drinker. The aspartame and other ingredients make one hungrier, and they wind up replacing those calories cut by drinking diet relatively quickly. |

I'd also like to add that all the chemicals contained in 'diet' sodas are not precisely good for you, and are best avoided. I harbour a passionate hatred of sweeteners, and don't understand those people who put them in tea or coffee (I only take milk in coffee, and drink tea plain - they taste so much better that way), let alone those who use them for baking. Unless one is diabetic and has to avoid sugar, there is no need to do anything of the sort.... Using smaller quantities is the key.

Great, aren't they? I just did 1,000 calories on one of those things (granted, it was probably less than that since their estimates are usually zonky). I hadn't done that in months and man, do I feel revitalized! It's nice to kick it up a few notches every now and then. |

@Epignosis and Raff: I know that those theories exist about sweeteners, but personally I can't confirm them (I tried switching to water for an extended period but didn't feel any change in hunger). But thanks for the warning!
![]() @WalterDigsTunes: Yes, I love it! I'm not using it as often as I should, but everytime I do it's really nice, especially compared to real running. Additionally especially at this time of the year I'm having problems when doing sports outside because of my allergy (hay fever) and my rather white skin (danger of sun burn). |

By the way, anyone familiar with stevia? And isn't sugar technically a sweetener anyway? ![]() Aspartame sucks big donkey balls as far as I am concerned. Sucralose isn't too bad. Saccarine is too saccarine. |

I've been using Splenda as a sweetener (primarily in my oatmeal) and I like it. I stay away from any refined sugar and have switched to either honey or agave nectar. Much better for you than sugar.

I love honey, but I have yet to try agave nectar (I will very soon though). Italian honey is often said to be the best in the world, and from my experience it may very well be. I've heard about stevia, of course, but what I've heard was not particularly positive... It seems it's way too sweet, which is a big no-no for me.

Stevia is used in really small quantities compared to the volume of sugar for any given level of sweetness. I don't know about the new commercially available varieties around here. It may be mixed with stuff to dilute it. The Center For Science In The Public Interest has come out skeptical against it, but I like it. It does make for a bit of a bitter taste in lemonade...
