Ok, I'm overweight. I'm male, about 5.9 feet tall and I weigh about 115kg (18.1 stone), which results in a BMI of about 35.

Currently I'm trying to effectively lose weight ... I'm using a neat (German) program that allows me to calculate my caloric balance (intake, sports and other factors all considered).

I've been doing this for two weeks now and I've already lost two kgs ... at a caloric minus of about 1000 calories each day. The thing is: I'm not really eating healthy stuff. Personally, I think the key is to simply not eat anything during the day except for some small snacks for lunch ... that way you'll have a lot of calories left for the evening.

So ... anyone else trying to lose weight here?

BTW: This article inspired me to create the thread:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5004431/Family-who-are-too-fat-to-work-say-22000-worth-of-benefits-is-not-enough.html

Now, I am sure that some people might be genetically bound to gain weight more easily than others ... meaning that their metabolism simply consumes less energy when idle. But I don't believe for a second that they couldn't lose weight if they really wanted to. They say they're having cereals in the morning and "bacon butties" for lunch. Rather than blaming healthy food being too expensive, I guess they could lose weight simply by sticking with cereals for lunch ... Wink

I have had yo-yo weight issues all my life - when I'm tense or nervous the pounds will fall off, when I'm content or depressed they pile back on - I can fluctuate between 11 stone and 15 within a few months regardless of what I eat or how I exercise. What I haven't managed to do yet is control what I eat when I am content or depressed, or deliberately make myself tense or nervous. Currently I'm just over 13 stone (85kg) and 5'8" (for personal reasons I'll not calc my BMI), so I am technically "overweight" - but I am deliriously content, so therefore I am happy with not seeing my feet for a few months. (I know they are there - I don't need to see them).

The key to any diet is not cutting out specific food groups, but to maintain a healthy balance and to simply reducing what you do eat - when I was seriously concerned about my weight I managed to educate myself into not clearing the plate at every meal (there was a common failing of post-war mothers who wouldn't let kids leave the table unless the plate was cleared). Of course you do tend to then over compensate by putting more on your plate than you would normally eat, so it has to be carefully watched - buying smaller dinner plates helps. For a while I lived on cheese salad - with fries, and I lost weight. It's not what you eat, but how much.

I assume your "saving up" calories during the day for the evening means you are balancing your intake through-out the day, rather than believing that there is any magic in eating past 6pm (there is a common myth among anorexics that eating at certain times of the day is bad for you, but it is just a psychological trick they use to control their eating).

Mine isn't the best example. I used to weight around 220 Lbs (I'm 5'11'') for all my adolecent-young20's life. I didn't do any diet or anything and I wasn't losing any weight. But eventually I' dropped down to 160. Not for good reasons. Something very bad in my life made me lose so much weight.  After I kicked that sh*t out of my system, the only change that wasn't completely atrocious in me was my new weight. But I wasted that.

I came to the US and out of anxiety and of stupidity I ate so much that I gained 40 pounds in two-three months.... I was back at 210. Then I decided to do something. I have never been the gym type, sadly, so I decided to just starve myself (I AM stupid after all). I ate only once a day and it gave me some results, going back to 180. But finally, the big realization came to me: losing weight in an un-healthy way is even worse than being slightly overweight. I decided to try to keep my weight but without starving myself. In the last 6 months since I met my girl I gained some 13 pounds again (having a partner absolutely sucks for weight issues LOL) but I keep it around that level. I'm not overweight but I could drop a few. These days I try to eat healthier and avoid sugar and some kind of foods. I've kept my weight balanced but I haven't gone back to starvation, as I started to have stomach problems of acid build-up and more.

Never starve yourself. NEVER. Eat healthier, less calorie-rich foods, but don't eat just once a day. We're not meant to do it that way. Our system needs food every 4-6 hours.

^ yes, I think that you'll lose weight if you simply eat less throughout the day. However, I also think that the body tries to conserve energy when you starve ... so I try to eat small snacks throughout the day in order to keep the metabolism up and running.

BTW: I'm in the lucky position to be able to use the bycicle every day ... about 30 minutes at a decent velocity. That means that even without any particular sports activities I work out 5 times a week ... that undoubtedly makes it easier to lose weight, since you can eat more. For example, today I ate a nice twin-bratwurst bun (or however you would translate "Bratwurst-Brötchen"Wink) for lunch and a nice piece of apple pie in the afternoon ... and later on I'll eat a super-sized meal of pasta bolognese. That's about 500 calories for the bratwursts, 400 for the apple pie and about 1200 for the pasta ... so 2100 calories in total. That leaves me with a balance of about -1000 calories for the day, which is what I'm trying to achieve - on average of course.

Damn you europeans who can move around your cities in bikes.... we in Florida are condemned to sit our fat asses in our cars as it is ABSOLUTELY impossible to do anything here or go anywhere without a car... So in a way we either work out and/or eat healthy or we're doomed to be big and bigger...

Yes... keep that metabolism running... you don't want your body to start burning muscle when it has no more actual good things to burn...

Back in late 2005 I weighed about 89 kilos (I'm about 175 cm). Then came a couple of changes in my life, first six months of military service and then moving in with a vegetarian girlfriend and a couple of dogs, and so since 2006 I've been slowly losing weight so that I'm now about 70 kilos. No big diets, not much excercise, just better food and healthier living overall. Ah, gotta go walk the dogs, I could have written more Tongue

Losing weight... yeah, I've done that. A year ago, I weighed about 187 pounds. Now, I'm at 150. A month ago, I reached my all-time low of 142. I did it by hitting the gym every day (non-stop) for an entire semester and burning 1000 calories each session (this is, of course, absurd; the machines might say you burn 1000 but you can't trust them at all... still, they give you something to work with). During my Winter Break, I focused on lifting weights. Oddly enough, I still lost weight. This semester, I just tried to do 500 calories a day and I'd only hit the gym 4 or 5 times a week. I also cut back on soft drinks. I didn't drink any soda for 6 months. Factor in some healthy cereals for breakfast, more protein and more water and bam! 45 pounds are gone.

Of course, you might want to avoid overdoing it lest your soon-to-be-then-actually-becomes-a-girlfriend  says you're a bit too skinny Tongue

I think Steve Martin had a diet in his book Cruel Shoes that ended up with loping off body parts if the first steps in his diet didn't work.

A few years ago I lost about 50 pounds on a diet from a book called Body for Life.  There was an excerpt in a magazine.  I didn't stick to it religiously but I did work out daily and ate 6 small meals a day including protein bars.  Unfortunately, I have since stopped working out and I seem to eat 6 big meals a day and those 50 pounds are back plus some.

I was at the heaviest I've ever been.

Some may claim to know why that is (read: beer), but I argue that isn't the case (case..haha)...

I have a huge weakness for pizza, and any attempt to shed pounds gets dumped by the end of the week because of my pizza intake eventually.

I lose weight through one of two methods (or both): I keep carrots and fish around.  I love fresh carrots and fish, so I eat them as a snack or as a meal.  I also use prog to run to (The Mars Volta is great for exercise).

Oh.

I should say I've never been successful at losing the weight I want BUT...

When I got married, my wife was a PORKER.  Pig

She had gained about 50 pounds in one year.  Dead

She lost all that weight doing the Special K diet for a year (no sh*t).  She ate Special K for breakfast, and then lunch, and then ate whatever we made for dinner.

Then a couple years later she got pregnant.

I'm not overweight, but a few days ago I noticed that all of my jeans have suddenly grown smaller in the closet.

As far as I remember myself I am trying to lose weight.... I am 1.78cm tall and ~96kg (but I don't look as bad as you imagine, luckily because I have generally heavy bone structure....)

I used to weigh 114kg at some point and now try to lose weight again. For me, the best way of losing weight is exercise or physically demanding work - this has worked for me at least two times.

And because I understand that not everyone can do a physically demanding job, exercise is the best medicine.

I once lost 28 lbs. in just under a month eating all raw fruits & vegetables ...no meat, dairy, bread, etc. ...just raw fruits for breakfast & raw veggies dipped in raw salsa, guacamole, or hummus for lunch & dinner - & just like that the lbs. began to fall off ...I couldn't keep it up though. Eating all raw foods keeps your body in constant detox & it can leave you feeling quite worn out. Ouch

I'm 5'10, 174 ish lbs, and have incredible self esteem issues, for multiple reasons. It might seems normal to someone, but my mind is f**ked up.
