Progressive rock is both beautifull and interesting, but there's a lot music around that's just beautifull. Sometimes I listen to Simon and Garfunkel or perhaps some jazz.
This 'you have to listen it progressive thing' could be of influence of bands being added on PA that aren't really progressive.

This happens to me every once in a while, with the exception of Yes, most Genesis and a large part of the beatles prog stuff. It happens to other things as well, too much of something generally kills your taste for it.

I generally go through cycles in my music listening. Been on a huge hip-hop binge lately, and have just recently moved on to post-punk and other 80s alternative music.
I'm sure I'll work back around to prog sometime.

Prog? Not really, I'm a casual prog fan (I devote myself to Zappa principally). The percentage of listening time
I dedicate to prog is always the same (25~30% I guess). I do have on and off
relationships with both jazz and metal music though. Sometimes, we just don't
get along. I believe it's because I play drums. Listening to Jack DeJohnette or crazy metal drummers can easily discourage you when you try to imitate them.

I'm just coming back from a several-months-long hiatus from progressive music.
For me, the motivation to come back was a couple of newer releases that I just couldn't help being excited about.

HI,
I'm tired of the term ... not the music ...
And I am not a great fan of the connotations of the music "type" ... I don't listen to types of music ... so in this sense ... I've been tired of prog for over 30 years when the term first started showing up!
Is the music better than before? NO
Is the music worse than before? NO
It's different music ... and what is going to bore us stupid is the fact that we are only listening to one style, one type and one combination of instruments ... and that is not a good definition of "prog" at all ... in fact, it is the definition of regressive since it can not "grow" and "progress" if it is stuck in a bottle!
Any new music? Nope
I'm finally looking to start dumping the record collection ... and replacing only the lp's with cd's that matter to me ... it's simply too much weight and I need to lose about 25 to 30 more pounds!
That said ... I have not heard anything new ... although I have enjoyed listening to Porcupine Tree's last 2 albums, none of the stuff mentioned here is even playing on LIve365 ... which pretty much tells you how much WE ... all here believe in it ... but I have not enjoyed a new Gismonti, or Jarrett or anyone else either ... so maybe some kind of feeling has been lost in there somewhere ...
So if you are losing it ... you are not the only one ...

This actually happened to me around the time Phideaux's "Doomsday Afternoon" came out. After I heard it, I was back to my usual prog appreciation. It's been great since then.

I also go through cycles listening to music. I've been in a prog mood in the last few weeks and even getting into some bands I've never liked before, but sometimes I get bored and listen to other stuff. I'm a fan of classic rock mainly, prog or not, and I'm also a big fan of brit pop and some grunge stuff since I was a teenager, I like a lot of different rock or pop bands besides prog and eventually I got tired of prog and listen to some of them depending on my mood.

Well, I must admit I found recently a lot to like in the 'alternative' genre and in instrumental funk-jazz/soul :
alternative : 16 horsepower, calexico, tarentella (very original band), Curtis Eller's American Circus (alt country), Hyacinth house (alt country from...Sweden, excellent)
instrumental funk-jazz/soul : Booker T + MG's, The Meters, Lefties soul connection, speedometer, sexteto electronico moderno, Eddie Hazel, ethio-jazz (jazz from Ethiopia melted with soul)
But at the same time as I dig other musical realms, I never lose sight of prog. However, find gems nowadays becomes more and more difficult in the "rock" field of prog (as opposed to "metal", see below) : I prefer to dig the long lost obscurities such as some rare folk (Fuchsia, Olivia (with A Barco do Sol as backing band, see my sig), Linda Perhacs (best discovery of the year), Folkdove, Anacrusa..). It seems that the most interesting and prolific prog comes currently from the metal world : bands such as Akphaezya, Electro Quarterstaff, Unexpect, Scale the summit, Blotted science, Atrox (the first line-up with female vocals), Ansur, Flametal, Stolen Babies...

I have recently come back to Prog (the last 6 months) after a gap of about 10 years. I got heavily into jazz, and it is such a broad, diverse genre that I listened to little else for a decade. Then for some reason I just had a burning desire to listen to early-to-mid 70s Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd. My hunger grew when I watched the Prog documentaries shown on BB4 just after Christmas. Since then, I can't get enough of it. I am buying at least two prog CDs every week (thank god for Amazon), usually based on recommendations from this website.
I take my dog for a long walk every night (about 4 or 5 miles) - I'm a school teacher and it's good to get the classroom out of your system for a while - and I listen to my latest prog acquistions on my MP3 player - and I love it. I guess I've become a 'born again' prog listener. So for me the prog luster faded for a while but is now shining like a crazy diamond.

I had a short dip recently. Fortunately it lasted one or two days. I was very relieved I can tell you.
Last year I had a break for about 5 months but that had more to do with reviewing than with listening to the music. I agree with those who say: don't force it. I hope for you it will come back again.

Hell, I couldn't imagine only listening to prog. My favourite genre by far, with plenty of soul searching and enchanting music. But a bit of light relief is good for everyone, and there are three minute pop songs that fill a void I don't think prog ever could. And that's great!

Never get tired of listening to prog music, they're so much good bands coming out. I don't have time to listen to another style of music. I am not the kind who thinks that today, there's no bands that do better than those of the 70's (golden age). It's just different, you have to know where to go to find those good new bands. Internet is the best way to discover good music from around the world.

When I originated this thread, I was just so tired of concentrating on a single genre (which I did at the time). I make it a point to 'mix it up' a bit. It's still my favorite, though.
