Ah f**king hell... Angry I'd written a long story about hearing USA before Larks' Tongues in Aspic and how the studio songs still feel pretty lame compared to their live counterparts still all these years later, but then I managed to erase the whole thing. But yeah, now that I'll probably end up buying Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair pretty soon, I fear that the same thing might happen with Absent Lovers and those albums, if AL is so much better as I remember you saying.

I absolutely love that lineup.

I really respect their musicianship as individuals and as a unit, and their compositions are really clever, but so far the 80s Crimso hasn't really connected with me the way the earlier lineups. I miss the beauty they had earlier, there are pretty things like Matte Kudasai, but to me it's just a pretty little thing, it doesn't reach me emotionally. I think the earlier Crimso was more diverse in their feel and sound, but it may just be that I'm not familiar enough with the later era to really see all there is Smile Yet.


That's funny you say that... Because I really like earlier Crimson, but my feelings are just the opposite of yours.

When Belew comes into the fold, then that's when the immense amounts of emotion and creativity come into play for me. My favorite earlier album though is Larks, and while that is 5 stars, it still just isn't the same to later Crimson for me.

One of my favorite Crimson albums is the ProjeKcts boxset. It's a shame that more people aren't made aware of that.

That's how you recognize a great band; everyone has different favorites Wink I'm massively biased towards the early Crimso for the simple reason that Red and In the Court were my two first prog albums ever and Starless is probably my all time favourite song. My first prog band and still there's stuff to find, I like that Smile 

Now it's bedtime, first I'll see what Miss Marple is up to with her Sleeping Murder, then it's zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

Yeah, perhaps they're overrated by the fans, but I think it's the same sort of thing as the yes-we-do-love-Rush-just-like-that endemic. Bands that don't compromise their vision much, are confident and have an idea of what they want to do, I think, tend to pick up very fiercely supportive followers, in lesser or greater numbers.

For the most part, I'd agree with that. I think Rush and VDGG are similar in that regard that they're really persistent and masters of what they do. But what they do isn't to everyone's taste or understanding.

There doesn't seem to be a great amount of overlap in their fan bases either.  Not to say that there isn't an overlap, but the biggest Rush bashers tend to be VDGG fans, and the biggest Rush fans don't tend to be that big of VDGG fans.  Certainly not all inclusive or exclusive but I've noticed a bit of this within the forums.

I've noticed that too. Though I also noticed my tastes aren't normal for a typical Rush fan either, so most people like me SHOULD like VDGG. But I don't.

I'm quite neutral when it comes to VdGG. To be honest, I'd probably give most of their albums 3 stars. But it's impossible to review them, since I'm sometimes in the mood to be really immersed by the music on Still Life and Godbluff.

I think it'd maybe be the one you'd like most of his solo recordings, FWIW. Loops & Reels (aka. the freaky electronic sh*t), maybe, is completely unrelated to the others, but if you don't like IC, I wouldn't bother with any of his other primetime albums (know the singer-songwriter stuff isn't up your alley, anyway, and the progressive ones are at least similar to IC).

You're more partial to them than I am then. Hammill's voice and lyrics come off to me as the opposite of what I look for in music, and the music is quite boring. I'd give all their albums 1 or 2 stars by PA's guidelines. Godbluff is the best one though; that may get 3 if I'm feeling generous.

They're pretty much the biggest disappointment with any band, prog or otherwise, that I've ever fully tried to get into.
