I've done some reading about this in the past. The chance is pretty small, but even if it were to strike earth, I'm being optimistic that we'd have technology that could somehow have a gravitational pull and direct the asteroid away from earth.
That's the one area of physics I wouldn't pin any hopes upon. The only mass big enough to exert an influence would be the moon or something from the asteriod belt - and we are not going to develop the tech to drag either of those around space in the next 27 years
What?

No...but I think there's supposed to be a ELE comet that has a small chance of smashing into the earth in 2036 or something.  Hmmmm...that would rock.  I'll be 67 if I've lived that long, and what a better way to go than during a mass extinction.  Thumbs Up
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

I know NASA monitors these sorts of things, and they'll be able to detect any "dinosaur killer" impacts several months (if not years) out. The idea is then that we smack it with something while it's far away, changing it's trajectory ever so slightly. If you do it with enough advance notice, it won't take much force to adjust even a huge body's trajectory so it will avoid the Earth.

No, the Mayan thing is absurdly stupid and pointless. I cannot understand why anyone is paying attention to it.

But they're an ancient civilisation! Everyone knows that ancient civilisations are privy to knowledge unattainable by modern science, like the existence of aliens, the date of the end of the world, faster-than-light travel and the location of the pencil case I lost a few years ago...

I don't think the whole Mayan thing means much from the surface either, but these guys were very advanced for their time. They were the first to use the number 0, and were advanced astronomers for their time. I think it's more myth than truth, but I don't think that it's absurd or anything like that.

They were advanced, but how does "They had an advanced calendar, and it happens to end in 2012, so the world will end because OOGAH BOOGAH" make any sense? They didn't even realize the dangers of deforestation...

I'm gunna go with...yes!

Its gunna be the asteroid, Quetzalcoatl will come and kill all the non believers, or the world will just end when we reach zero point.
Theres so many people saying we will all die in 2012 it must be true!
To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if we all do in 2012...but it'll most likely be a nuclear war

Fascinating that this comet is named 99942 Apophis (666 upside down and inverted + the ultimate answer to the ultimate question + the Greek name for the Egyptian god Apep - the uncreator) and that the comet would hit on Easter Sunday, April the 13th.  That's just too good right there.  Gonna have to go reread Revelations and/or listen to Supper's Ready.

Now THAT is crazy. There's no denying that it's gunna happen now. I better just enjoy life until April 12, 2012.

Let me just say that anyone who has researched this 2012 prediction knows that many people predicted the same exact date over the centuries. It has come up quite a few times, and always in a negative, end-of-the-world light. All of the people who predicted it didn't know each other, and lived in completely different countries/centuries, and a computer program originally designed to predict stock market crashes also pointed to 12-21-2012 as being a cataclysmic event. So if this is all just some big consiracy, it's pretty damn elaborate.

That being said, I'm not really worried about it. If the world does end then, there is nothing we can do about it, so I say enjoy life while you can, and after all, isn't that what anyone can do?

Beyond here lies nothing...or so sez Dylan, and I always trust his lyrics.

Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

She plays the drums, so I assume she would.
